    Excellent- well worth a trip
Last minute plans and on a whim joined on a heritage guided tour. Caroline was very friendly and an excellent guide very informative and knowledgeable. Tour was well worth the money. Highly recommend.
Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed your tour and we will pass on this lovely feedback to Caroline. Hope to see you again! Kind Regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

    Excellent experience
We came here as a family for the guided tour, and Gemma was absolutely fantastic. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She certainly made it worth the visit. Rest of the staff were also very lovely and polite, and site as a whole was very interesting!
Thank you for your positive review Samantha. We are incredibly proud of our award winning Heritage Guides and will pass this feedback on to Gemma! We're glad you enjoyed your time here and hope to see you again soon! Kind Regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

    Bodmin Jail Visit
Our first time visiting Bodmin Jail today and WOW!! What an amazing experience. Do much history in this place and it’s displayed do well, I won’t add any spoilers but it’s not just an old building to walk around, there’s much much more to it. Definitely recommend for a few hours. 10/10 from me 👍🏻
Hi, thank you so much for such an amazing review! We are so pleased you enjoyed your time at the jail and hope to see you again soon! Best wishes The Bodmin Jail Team

    Great experience despite issues
Visited today and overall throughly enjoyed - it wasn’t without incident but the team did their best in trying circumstances. Initially we couldn’t book tickets as the website wasn’t working so decided to risk arriving on spec ( we’re staying about 20 mins away ). We got there just as the escorted Tour was about to start and the team kindly held it back a few minutes so we could join it. The first hour or so were brilliant. The effects in the first part are fabulous and very clever. The tour then proceeded to the cell area where our guide Rhiannon was a great storyteller; lots of information shared regarding prisons in general and some specific inmates. Very personable and approachable. Sadly we then had our tour interrupted by a fire alarm. We were safely and quickly evacuated and once the building was ok were allowed back inside. But the exhibits that needed power hadn’t yet reset so despite Rhiannon’s best endeavours ( and she really was very good ) the latter part of the tour fizzled out when the fire alarms went off again - and again. These things do happen and it’s unfortunate- what was good was how Rhiannon handled the interruptions and the fact we were offered , without asking , the opportunity to return to finish what we hadn’t been able to totally enjoy. Not sure we will have time to do that but the offer was appreciated.
Hi, thank you so much for your lovely review! We do appreciate that the fire alarm going off is a huge inconvienence and are so sorry that it happened. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your tour despite this and would welcome you back any time. We will pass on your lovely review to Rhiannon as well. Best wishes The Bodmin Jail Team

    The perfect ‘rainy day’ activity!
We decided to book a guided tour here on a wet and windy day, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff throughout, from the cafe to the entrance were friendly and welcoming and so the experience truly starts from the moment you walk in. Our guide, Carl, really added to the experience with his incredible knowledge of the prison and its former inmates (I would really recommend opting for the guided tour, we learnt so much more than was just on the information boards) and welcomed questions from us all.
Thank you for your wonderful feedback, Beanie. I shall ensure to forward your comments to all of the staff here at Bodmin Jail. Thank you for your visit, we hope to see you back to enjoy one of our Seasonal Heritage Tours! Kind regards, Olivia

Enjoyable day out, however parking issues and no food available!
It states on website to arrive 15 minutes before the start of your allotted timeslot. We would have done, if there had been any parking near this attraction! We had to park a good 20 minutes uphill walk away. There is NO car park and it does not mention this on the website. Anyone with walking difficulties would have really struggled, so please beware. Also, the cafe was closed for food when we came out of our tour. They are experimenting at the moment by not serving any food between 4pm and 5pm. WHY?! Again, nothing mentioned about this on the website! The actual tour was good, we went round on our own, some good effects. The narrator/s voices are quite clear throughout, but the other actors' voices aren't always that clear. It would have been nice to have seen more of the actual jail building. Overall, we quite enjoyed the trip, but not sure if we would go again.
Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate it! Unfortunately, they didn't think of incorporating a car park when they built the prison in 1779! However, as stated on our website, you can park in Sainsburys car-park, free of charge for up to 2.5 hours, whilst visiting Bodmin Jail. We are sorry that you couldn't purchase any food at the restaurant. I shall forward your feedback to the restaurant team. Their website is separate to ours, unfortunately. We are very pleased however to hear that you enjoyed your tour! Kind regards, Olivia

Guided tour not to be missed!
If there’s ever one guided tour you do, Bodmin Jail needs to be it! They’ve spent millions doing up this attraction up and it’s very impressive. We visited on the 1.30pm tour on Thurs 21st Sept with Caroline as our guide. Caroline was fantastic. She truly immersed you in the experience of the criminals she told you the stories of. Her knowledge of the jail is excellent. We’ll be highly recommending this attraction (and paying extra for the guided tour) to anyone we know who goes to Cornwall. They do ghost tours and ghost hunting here too that you can book up. We’ll be doing that if we return to Cornwall for sure! One guided tour attraction not to be missed!
Thank you for your positive feedback, David! I shall forward your kind words onto Caroline and the team. We look forward to seeing you again soon for a spooky paranormal tour! Kind regards, Olivia

Well worth visiting, not what I was expecting at all. Won’t give any spoilers but such an interesting place to visit. I would definitely recommend you visit if in the area. Probably not suitable for very young children as can be scary in parts.

    Well worth a visit.
As we were staying nearby, we were looking for things to do & found a leaflet advertising a visit to Bodmin jail. So as I've visited old jails before, especially in Australia, we thought we'd give this a go. I was very pleased we did as it really wasn't what I was expecting. Its like something out of Universal studios with holograms and films that tell a story about real life prisoners. Altogether I would thoroughly recommend a visit here as its highly entertaining.

We booked a party of 8 adults for the Bodmin jail & Paranormal tour at £25 each. The tour lasted 2 hours.

The renovations are evident in every area of the tour, which you realise at the end is only a small part of the huge jail. The areas visited are effectively the same as film sets, with fibreglass walls resembling rock facing, absolutely level tiled floors, and lighting rigs all over the room ceilings. You realise later that some areas didn’t have floors or ceilings previously.

The wall panels in formal areas are also new despite looking old. The cell areas have been made good for thousands of visitors, very safe and almost clinical. You cannot imagine the areas looking anything like the new version 200 years ago.

The tour guide started her talk by claiming she was educated in science, but as this was a paranormal linked tour, she proceeded to spend the two hours delivering utter rubbish about how mysterious events had happened to her and visitors ‘just yesterday’ and ‘last night’. She explained how we might expect to feel touches on various parts of the body (we didn’t).

After 15 minutes we realised we had another 90 minutes of this hogwash. She was a barefaced liar, claiming also that the newly installed disabled lift ‘rose and fell by itself’ and the engineers had been back ‘many times’ and could not find anything wrong. Why it wasn’t taped off with ‘do not use until it can be exorcised of the presence of ‘a lady’’ was not mentioned.

I have no doubt some gullible souls believe some of this professionally delivered drivel but only the presence of my family and not wanting to embarrass them stopped me from calling her out.

I also believe the general tour is probably very good. But don’t waste your money on the made up paranormal stuff; just watch that Fielding woman on TV and laugh at that instead.

Sorry that your visit didn't meet your expectations, Andy. We feel that our recent investment preserves this iconic building so that it can be enjoyed for many generations to come. Unfortunately, parts of our jail were in immediate need of attention as they were unsafe. We believe that the experience we have now opened will engage future generations on an educational level whilst preserving Bodmin Jail's Heritage. Our Paranormal Manager who was your Tour Guide is highly respected in the worldwide paranormal field and despite your defamatory feedback, we consistently receive outstanding reviews on a regular basis about her work. There have been, and continue to be, countless staff and visitor accounts of paranormal activity within the jail. but we never guarantee this as we are not in control of the spirits or energies that reside within. If you would like a more in-depth Paranormal Experience, we suggest that you have a look at our Overnight After Dark Tour. Kind regards The Bodmin Jail Team

Firstly, I must say that I am astonished at the many five star reviews on here.
I love history and was really looking forward to soaking up some of the ancient atmospheric conditions of the jail, but most of it no longer exists due to the changes that have been made. Only a small portion of the jail is open to the public now as construction work is under way to transform what was the main cell blocks into a luxury hotel.
While the special effects were very good in their own way, to me it detracted from the whole ambience of it being an old historic jail and resembled a stage set. The 'Naval Wing' was the only area that you could see some originailty with original cells, but even that was too theatrical for me, with the sound effects of moaning prisoners and general prison noise. An eerie quietness would, for me, produce a far greater effect.
We did have a guide who was very informative and entertaining, but who disappeared half way through the tour never to be seen again...?
All in all, if you like special effects and a fairly short visit, then you will probably like it, but in my opinion it is over rated and slightly over priced.

We booked tickets for Bodmin jail as rain was forecast and thought that it would be a good touristy thing to do in bad weather, and it was.
This was our first visit so no previous experience to compare it to.
It felt like numbers to the initial "dark walk" had been limited for Covid reasons as there were only about 8 or 10 of us in a fair sized room. Even so we didn't feel particularly socially distanced and felt a liitle uneasy but not sure what more they could do. Hand sanitiser stations are plentiful throughout the tour.
The first 2 rooms of the "dark walk" felt really naff with the walls clad in fake plastic rocks and quite poor videos projected on the walls. However it soon picked up in room 3 where the experience became 4-D and the special effects quite extravagant.
The subsequent self-guided cells and information boards were very well done and interesting, culminating in the final hanging "experience" which was also very well done.
Good value for money at £15 each for adults, a good way to spend 90 minutes on a rainy day despite the poor first 2 rooms.

Really enjoyed the experience, really well presented and very informative.
Our guide Bex was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and really brought everything to life. Very good effects on the interactive first part of the tour.
Our trip was only spoilt on returning home from Cornwall to a £100 parking fine.
We parked in Berrycoombe Car Park which is the nearest car park and paid £4.50 for 3 hours which is the maximum. We arrived early and the tour ran 10 minutes late so we ended up just about on the 3 hours by the time on the ticket when we returned to the car. However by the cameras which photograph you entering and leaving, 3hours 12minutes with no time allowed for actually finding a spot, purchasing a ticket and checking the route back on returning to the car.
Feels like a moneymaking scam and Bodmin Jail should distance itself from this or warn visitors on booking to avoid being part of this.

Thank you for the review. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to the attraction and that you had a good time on the Heritage Tour with Bex. I am sorry to hear of your parking struggles. Berrycoombe car park is managed by ParkingEye and you would need to contact them directly. I do believe the cars get charged from the moment they drive into the car park (via the camera) as opposed to the time the ticket comes out of the pay and display machine. We are looking at ensuring clear signage is in place to help our visitors avoid these issues. Kind regards, Krystal

I was taken aback upon arrival to find a group of some 24-26 people all stood in the reception area no staff in attendance, my wife had to walk through into the entrance and was immediately jumped on . We explained we had booked a guided tour and were early but told to join the mass of people waiting … guided tour surely not 24 people maybe there were several guides ! Nope after some ticket buying and more waiting we were ushered through an electronic gate and into another waiting area . Here after a few minutes we were joined by our single guide a small Italian lady with a mask , we listened to a slightly disjointed speech ( difficult to hear with accent and mask ) then into the experience. The group was obviously far too big as it took some time to move everyone down stair cases and into position we were in enclosed spaces do people were quite rightly concerned . The holographic movie shows were ok and space not to bad but you had to be dead centre to get a view of course the volume of people dicey allow this !
But things took a much worse turn Bodmin jail should be ashamed , we were first guided into a small corridor any social distancing was impossible, it was warm .. hot and claustrophobic ,our guide struggled to make herself heard and held us here for far too long and seemed uncomfortable. That was bad but it got worse after another few minutes as we moved on of tour the whole group was encouraged and ushered into a 4 meter by 5 meter room .. err pandemic ! just unbelievable and dangerous I and several others refused to enter much to the surprise and indignation of the guide . It really didn’t get any better in the next few rooms or corridors and ended with me excusing myself and leaving the attraction indoor section !
I can only think that someone at Bodmin jail thought cramming groups far far to big for the attraction and guiding such a large group was a good idea to take revenue and increase the take .Shameful dangerous and shocking . The tour was mediocre over attended , and we couldn’t get away quickly enough . Hang your head Bodmin jail you’ve put people at risk and are clearly a risk to those that attend ! Not somewhere I could recommend in fact if you want to stay healthy AVOID .

Thank you for your feedback, Neil. We are very sorry that you didn't feel safe about your experience with us. We advise all of our customers to still wear face coverings and to hand sanitize throughout their visit. We only allow a certain amount of people in one group at a time. This should ensure that social distancing can be still kept in place, so we also apologize that on this occasion, this wasn't the case. We do all we can to ensure that all of our customers are and feel safe throughout their visit. We feel that our extremely knowledgeable French Tour Guide Natalie, explains the history that lays here extremely well, we apologize that you didn't agree. We have taken all of your comments and feedback on board and will be passed onto our General Management Team, to ensure that this doesn't happen to anyone else. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to email us at info@bodminjail.org Kind regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

It has been a number of years since I have been to Bodmin Jail and what a change! The last visit was to a very cold, damp, oppressive building.

The jail has been revamped into a very good tourist attraction that tells a story of Cornwall, the jail and its people. A walk through living history, even sitting in a court room as criminals are sentenced! But I will not say to much as not to spoil it for you.

I could have spent longer reading but I was told off by my teenage kids!

Before we entered the jail, we went into a lovely cafe on site called The Jolly Hangman's Tavern; nice staff but the drinks took nearly 25 minutes for two coffees and two soft drinks.

I believe the attraction does offer a Blue Light discount for special events.

The site has really friendly, helpful staff overall and I would highly recommend a visit, especially with teenage kids.

At some point, me & my wife would like to stay at the hotel for a couple of nights once the kids have fled the nest!!

We booked onto a heritage tour and were welcomed by Caroline at the start of the tour. She was very friendly and gave clear instructions of what was going to happen over the next couple of hours. There were around 12 of us on the tour and we began with the ‘dark walk’. Holograms appeared in front of us all giving us a history of the jail, the tour continued with Caroline keeping us interested with her tales of prisoners that once were. We learnt so much information about how the prison cells developed over the years and the conditions that the prisoners had to live in, it really was an eye opener! Whilst in the prison cells I became quite faint and Caroline was so attentive, she bought me a chair and made sure that I was ok. I’m not sure if it was the spooky experience that made me feel unwell, the stories of the prisoners or could it have been paranormal activity around us! Caroline made the whole experience an unforgettable one and we would definitely recommend to friends and family.
We had lunch afterwards in the ‘Jolly Hangman’ restaurant in the main courtyard and we would highly recommend this too, first class service, first class food and reasonably priced too.

We are very happy to hear you had a great time on one of our award-winning Heritage Tours! Our fabulous Caroline is full of knowledge and enjoys telling the tales of our past inmates alongside the history of Bodmin Jail itself! The building has gone through many changes since it opened in 1779, even after it closed as a prison in 1927. Our guides pride themselves on bringing this history to life for all ages and making it a fascinating experience. We offer plenty of tours here throughout the year, Seasonal themed tours as well as our Paranormal tours too! We will make sure to pass on your positive feedback regarding the Jolly Hangman Tavern and their staff. Kind regards, Gemma

I'm not writing this to be mean but I want to be honest.

Being a huge history fan we thought this would be a fun afternoon to take our 7 year old.
For starters it's not a cheap attraction, it cost us just shy of £50 for 2 adults, 1 child and parking.

At the beginning it all seemed quite exciting and hubby even said "I bet this cost a fair bit to lay on". After walking through the first two "immersive" rooms it all kind of deflates from there.
You see barely anything of the jail itself, there are roughly 7 cells with nothing much in them and that's pretty much it.
Everything you read on the walls could have been stuck in a pamphlet and the other bits and bobs (whipping wrack, couple of old Consort tables/desks with jars on) could have been stuck in a porta-cabin in the car park.
At the end in the "hanging room" a tour guide popped in and said "I've only got 23 seconds before the next group and someone just asked where the prisoners were buried".
At that point I realised that that was it and there was nothing else we were going to get to see.

I honestly would have really loved it if there was more explaining of the renovation works, where the current hotel sits in respect to the old prison, where were the prisoners buried, there seems to be residential houses within the prison walls, have they always been residential or were they part of the old prison? Where were the staff quarters?

We honestly walked out of there completely underwhelmed and still none the wiser to much information about the actual building.
Most people visiting Cornwall will have an idea about smugglers, wreckers and the Beast of Bodmin and to me this information was shoehorned into this "attraction" just to fill gaps, once you take these bits of information out of this walk through you're left with nothing much else.
This took about an hour to get round (and it only took that long because you're trying to read things between the crowds). You could go to Paignton Zoo for almost exactly the same price and have a full afternoon.
We can say we've been and seen it but I won't be back

Thank you for your feedback, Clare. We are sorry to read this. Although our prices are inline with other Cornish Attractions. Unfortunately, due to the the building being unsafe, it was in desperate need of attention. We feel that our recent investment has been created to preserve our beautiful iconic building, to be enjoyed by many generations to come. I am sorry that you didn't get to be shown the hotel. If ever you do revisit, please let a member of staff aware and we will show you around the hotel which used to be the run down Naval Wing and Civil Wing. We are always looking to improve our museum, we have taken all of your comments on board and will be forwarded on to our management team. Please feel free to email us at info@bodminjail.org to let us know of any more ideas so we can continue our improvement. Kind regards, Olivia

Place has been ruined and is no longer a historic site more like a modern attraction based loosly on the jail. With very little historic stuff to see

This was unfortunately more geared up for children then for anyone actually interested in the building or the real history. Sadly they have covered most the original brickwork up. You can only access the basement and ground floor the rest Is not accessible to the day visitors the other I believe are to do with the hotel. The lady at the reception gave us a brief history talk that lasted approx 1.5 minutes. Followed by the book case opening and you going down a flight of stairs to be met by a interactive guide. The whole of the dark walk was OK more just history of a few people before they ended up in the prison. After that you got to freely walk around the cell area with only 2 or 3 that you could actually walk into the rest was fenced off with what looked to be carved people in a stone block. The governors office was above the only area of cells and was clear all bad reproductions after this area came the haunted part all going on about ghosts. There is a rem pod display which the lights go off regularly at about 3mins apart making it seem as if this is fake and just trying to sell more ghost tickets (not to forget you can even by a bodmin jail rem pod in the shop with other ghost hunting items) after this came the beast of bodmin room. Over all disappointing for anyone going for the history as it seem to just be trying to cash in on the sites history and paranormal activity without actually showing you any of the history most adults want.

Over all verdict
I would recommend going to the bodmin keep if you want history and authentic artefacts. If you have smaller children and want just want to dip your toe into general history without going to deep into anything then this might be a good stop.

Oh and keep an eye out for dog poo as there was a few bits around and someone seemed to of step in some and walked it up the steps outside⁷

I am sorry to hear that your visit was not what you expected or hoped it would be. The work undergone was an essential factor in securing the building which was previously not accessible and safe. The high level of investment made has enabled people to come and learn of Cornwall's history and will allow future generations to visit the jail. We have left the original brickwork in place. The area where you enter and go through the Dark Walk was an additional build which then connects through a tunnel which joins the new build to the original building. From that point on wards you continue through original jail walls. It sounds like you had some enjoyment from the Dark Walk, I am glad if that's the case. The Paranormal equipment is just there for a display to promote the events that take place in the evening here at Bodmin Jail Attraction. As one of the most haunted sits in the UK we do have a lot of people interested in this aspect, hence we have a small section to advertise our specific tours to those who might be interested in this area of our jails history. We know that this isn't to every bodies taste but for some people its a really important aspect of their visit. It sounds like you might have benefited more from one of our Heritage guided tours which really dive deep into the history of the jail and incorporates a lot of in depth information provided by our tour guides. I would recommend that anyone really wanting an in depth visit, consider booking the guided tour. Once again I am sorry to hear your visit did not meet your expectation. Kind regards, Krystal

As a local living in bodmin my entire life me and my partner decided to visit for the afternoon and see how the jail had been refurbished.

The immersive tour was pretty good and had clearly had a lot of money spent on it although a bit gimmicky. The museum that followed was ok nothing exciting, there were so many people and sooo much reading you didnt have chance to read or look at most things properly. More importantly you lost a lot of the original jail, there was no eery atmosphere as you previously had.

We then ate at the restaurant which was very nice although quite chaotic.

The whole experience was on the pricey side, all in all we spent around 70-80 pound for 2 hours 20 minutes entertainment, plus parking!

We used the new car park (many park on the road for free which causes lots of difficulties for local and makes the road dangerous) on berrycombe road and put what we thought was 2-3 hours on the car, turns out it was 2 hours and this starts from the time the camera checks you driving in to the car park not the time you buy the ticket. As we were 20 minutes over our time we were then greeted by a £100 parking fine! Even though we were unable to leave the tour to get another ticket.

So all in all we spent almost 200 quid for a couple of hours out in our own town! Which in all honesty is appalling... we will never return again.

Unfortunately this attraction is aimed at tourist and has no consideration for the locals yet again! Surely a locals discount or even refunded parking ticket wouldnt go a miss. Such a shame

Thank you for your feedback. We feel that our recent 8.5M investment into the attraction, has preserved this iconic part of our building, to be enjoyed by many generations to come. Sadly, our whole building was in immediate need of attention, due to health and safety reasons. We are sorry that you felt that your experience was a little overpriced. However, our prices are in line with other Cornish Attractions and we are always closely monitoring this. Unfortunately, the car park is managed by Parking Eye and not ourselves. We have recently been made aware of this issue and has been passed onto our management team to be dealt with in our car park meeting. Again, we have taken all of your comments on board, including a locals scheme, and will be passed on to the general management team. Sorry for any inconvenience. Kind regards, Olivia
