About
Celebrating the history of Weston-super-Mare and its surrounding areas. Weston Museum is open 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. At Weston Museum not only can you can explore inspiring galleries that will ignite your curiosity, we also create events to make memories for years to come. We believe that a Museum isn’t a collection of old artefacts, it is the identity of our town. Understanding our history plays a key role in improving our future. Here at Weston Museum, we don’t just recall life, we live it. We are the makers of memories from big events such as weddings, to the care from our volunteers to the education of children, and the home of new friendships over a coffee in Clara’s cafe. We all are Weston Museum, the sum total of ‘our town’.

- Getaway22471Bristol, United Kingdom9 contributionsGreat place to meet.Lovely little museum, with lots to see. Great atmosphere and plenty of visitors. People seemed to meet there to do crafts etc or just have food and drink. We had a lovely cup of coffee on arrival. looked around and then stayed for lunch. The best panini I have ever had, light and crispy. I asked about it and was told that everything is sourced locally. The staff are so friendly and helpful.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023
- JuneBug1939Weston super Mare, United Kingdom4,726 contributionsDr Who ExhibitionWe came to see the Dr Who exhibition - we are great fans of the BBC programme ever since it began in the early 50s. The display covered every actor who has played the part of Dr Who through the years. My favourite was always Tom Baker with his very long scarf! There is a Cyberman guarding the entrance - we had our photos taken with it! Weston Museum also has a very nice cafe where we had lunch - toasted panini, salad and crisps. Lovely cups of tea, too! The exhibition is on until lqte January 2024. Go see it!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 November 2023
- Pamela SBristol, United Kingdom177 contributionsNot to be missedI had some spare time in Weston so used my phone to find the museum. It's a bit off the beaten but we'll worth the effort. It's more modern, larger and better than I'd expected. Upstairs the new displays tell the story of the area . Downstairs there's a cafe, temporary display area and access to Clara's cottage. Friendly and enthusiastic staff.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 December 2023
- sheena m10 contributionsWhat a lovely afternoon out.We have today returned from a very pleasant afternoon at our local Museum. We were greeted by friendly staff on entry who told us where to find the exhibits. We had children with us and she particularly mentioned the Julia Donald exhibition and Claras Cottage. There was also a toy area for the children to keep them amused. The cafe was perfectly adequate and clean and offered the usual snacks - toasties, sandwiches and a lovely selection of cakes and sweet offerings as well as a good selection of hot and cold drinks. It was a lovely atmosphere and I would certainly recommend a visit - ideal if you are looking for somewhere to visit on a winters afternoon.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 August 2024

We came here mainly to see my name, one of many carved on individual wooden blocks and set into the floor, plus my late parents' names, too, on a wall-mounted display. Our subscriptions at the time helped to pay for the refurbishment of the museum a few years ago, but I have never been happy with the results. The place was deserted today, so I guess other people have the same feeling of disappointment. Such a shame to take down all the lovely historic wall advertisements and get rid entirely of the old chemist shop window. We strolled about a bit, chatted to the reception chap who seemed glad of someone to interact with . Then we came away, feeling deflated and sad at the loss of our old museum.

Hello JuneBug1939,
Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to Weston Museum.
Since being taken over by Weston-super-Mare Town Council, we have underwent a renovation that transformed the museum into what is considered a more modern museum, making it light and airy.
Now that we've had the renovation. we now have the capacity to have exhibitions that change frequently, and a wide range of events that take place both week days, weekends and evenings. The layout also gives us the ability to do so many other things including parties, meetings and even weddings.
We do hope to see you visit Weston Museum again soon, and hope that your future visits are more enjoyable.
Many thanks,

We really enjoyed our visit with friends to Weston Museum. We had booked an afternoon tea for 4 of us in Clara's Cafe, and what it joy it was! There were fresh sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and cakes, all accompanied with tea or coffee. We were served promptly and were not rushed at all.
We took the opportunity to have a look around the Museum and Clara's Cottage again, and were pleased to see exhibits including a few new ones.
All in all a lovely afternoon, and many congratulations to all the volunteers who were most welcoming.

A lovely local museum situated in the old gas works. Also attached is Clara’s Cottage, a traditional Victorian seaside terraced house. Great for children to look at toys ‘gone by’.
There are various displays throughout the year, along with a small cafe and gift shop.

If you are staying in Weston-super-Mare and have a couple of hours to spare hidden away (I mean hidden) in the back streets with five minutes from the high street is Weston Museum.
This is a fascinating look at the history of the area, and how it has developed over time from thousands of years before Roman occupation.
It covers the time 150 years ago when Weston was a small fishing village pop. 100 to its tourist boom to the current day where it’s pop. Is closer to 85000.
There is a small tea room, where you can stop for a refresher before heading off to your next stop. We visited Whorlebury Hill fort after this.
Well worth a stop if you are interested in local history.

The museum used to be excellent, really interesting; every time I visited Weston I'd go there but never again. Its empty, Clara's house - oh yes, they've got one of those in Gloucester...and probably throughout the country. Very quaint but a lot of people have interiors these days that aren't all that different.
And it's sanitised like a stage set.
Oh, and they have a boat.
Museums are about collections, you visit to see things from the past and to learn from this.
Not for conferences or weddings or for generic gift shops and cafes.

Just spent a lovely hour or so at the museum with my family. Only a short walk from the seafront and definitely worth it. Although quite small, there are lots of fun exhibits to see as you follow the story of how the town was developed and the impact of tourism and stories of people that live in Weston. Very well maintained museum and the cafe is excellent with such friendly service.

I just saw they have a wedding license. The museum isn't just full of history- it's full of the romance that comes with it. Just imagine the love stories resting there and their lovers who would love for you to have someone love you
SeriousyI challenge anyone that not one exhibit in Weston Museum doesn'thave a love story behind it
Including the staff and cake btw
Plenty of places to get down on one knee too AND rings for sale in the gift shop in an emergency... best wishes. ❤️
And there are some fine things in there.
Also it's not hard to find and what I loved is it's far enough away from Costa Coffee that it's quiet and you can get a whole sofa to chill on and let the kids play
Weston's hidden gem...

We came to Weston-super-Mare on a whim. We didn't plan anything and decided to just go with whatever we saw. And we are glad we saw the Weston Museum! You can usually tell how good a place is by how much time you spend there without realising..... we were there for 2 hours! It's lovely and clean and very well maintained. It's well lit and staff are polite and seem well trained.
