Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is one of the most exceptional chapels that I have visited, all covered with gold and exquisite art. There are no words to describe the beauty. It is definitely a must see.

The history of this old monastery is interesting, and is is part of the UNESCO World Heritage trail of old colleges. The town is a quaint "Pueblo Magico". The Colegio has wonderful painting of the life of Ignacio Loyola by a famous artist, an interesting exhibit on trade with the Far East--but the highlight are the fantastic gold altars in both the churches--one for the students and the main "temple".

It is a spectacular town where our culture is shown as Mexicans and gives us a little of its beauty and wealth of our country in general. The experience was so pleasant that I would definitely return the next day.

We entered this church via the National Museum (see separate posting) - indeed it is like a showcase of man's craftsmanship. The main church was jaw dropping enough but then into the side chapel and there's more. One man was gainfully employed with a soft brush attachment to a vacuum cleaner, dusting all the gilt - a job for life!

The San Francisco Javier church and monastic complex incorporates the National Virreinato museum, which houses a great collection of colonial artifacts, art and other treasures, which definitely warrants a visit as well. The church is a true wonder of opulence, artistry and craftsmanship in Mexican High Baroque style, dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Entrance to the church is gained through the museum, which itself is housed in the maze of a former Jesuit college. The elaborate facade of the church rivals that of the Sagrario of the Metropolitana Cathedral in Mexico City. The highlight is the interior of the church itself with its ornate gilded altars and the small room/chapel of San Jose, which is elaborately decorated and is truly an exquisite treasure chest. The Hosteria del Convento restaurant in the complex is a pleasant place to have a bite or a drink. The quaint town of Tepotzotlan is easily reached from Mexico City in just over an hour.

Before or after visiting the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, you should definitely visit the Temple of San Francisco Javier, probably the best example of Mexico's unique version of baroque architecture. In particular, visit the Loreto Chapel which has some eye-popping gilded stucco. Amazing!

Recommended to visit after you finish your journey inside Tepotzotlan's Vice-royalty Musem. This temple has another "above-exquisite" baroque altarpiece worth of more pictures (if it wasn't enough... all those inside the museum hehehe...) Don't spend more than 1 hour, so you can go to city's main square and enjoy some of the local food delicacies. Foreign Visitors: Please be respectful, 99% of people which visit this place and locals are catholic and very religious, if possible leave some money as gratuity for the temple's use.
