Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour.A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait.

When first approaching the house it looks quite dour, & forbidding, however once inside the fantastic paintings, + the stories behind the paintings take over the visit. Rex Whistler was a genius!

We recently visited Plas Newydd, partly because it's featured heavily in the National Trust magazine for its LGBTQ history... of which we found none but a few photos right at the very end with no explanations (- 1 star). The house itself it beautiful, however the grumpy volunteer at the house entrance was extremely rude as we entered, demanding to... More

I have visited Plas Newydd on several occasions, and now go directly to see this fantastic painting and hear again the story of how it was painted, and why it was never completed.

The house may not be Chatsworth, but it's worth a visit for the magical Rex Whistler painting on a wall in the dining room alone. The location is magnificent on the shores of the Menai Strait and the house and gardens are interesting enough. But wait until you see the amazing trompe l'oeil by Whistler, who spent a long time... Although the house and grounds are of interest I like to go just to see the wonderful 58 foot long painting by Rex Whistler. A view of a panoramic harbour scene with a background of the mountains of Snowdonia. I could look at the painting for hours and still find something I haven't noticed before. I believe this to be... What a gem...lovely greeting but could have done without the national trust hard sell..I get it they're trying to raise money for these wonderful properties but most people visiting this kind of place know all about the national trust. That said the house was beautiful and plenty of guides to enlighten on route. The whistler section and the mural a... More

Lovely interesting house. Rhododendron walk not as good as I thought as the shrubs are so tall you can't see the flowers! Otherwise the house itself is very interesting particularly the whistler and Paget connection. Recommended.

This is a national trust property and as such delivers what you expect. Lovely house and grounds with amazing rhododendrons this time of year. Nice cafe, good shop and well informed volunteers to guide you. Our highlight was the Rex Whistler mural - amazing! Also good is the accessibility. Travel buggy that can transport people with mobility issues. Finally great... More

A well outlined grand country house, and the study was a fine example of how one person worked at an age long after others retire.
