About
Ballindalloch Castle is one of Scotland’s most romantic castles, set in the magnificent surroundings of the Spey Valley and known as ‘The Pearl of the North’. Ballindalloch, the highland home of the lairds of Ballindalloch since 1546, is one of the very few privately owned castles to have been lived in continuously by its original family. Originally built on the traditional Z-plan in the mid-16th century, the Castle has subsequently been greatly altered and enlarged, resulting in the fairly tale exterior visible today. The architecture is completed by interiors ranging from the atmospheric Guard Tower, accessed by an original stone staircase, to the elegance and comfort of the 18th-century formal rooms. The formal grounds of Ballindalloch Castle were principally laid down in the second half of the 19th Century, following the extensive restorations to the Castle made around 1850.

- 🏴Bob’s My Uncle51 contributionsBeautiful castle and grounds and fab cafe! The staff were great - really friendly and knowledgeable. The castle itself is beautiful and it was great to get a glimpse of how the other half live! Grounds very nice too. Special mention for the cafe which was lovely. We were there on a sunny day and enjoyed coffee and very good cake on the lawn. Highly recommend the castle and gardens to all.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024
- Annie SCocoa Beach, Florida13 contributionsBeautiful, peaceful and a nice way to relaxThe gardens, grounds and castle are beautiful. The cafe coffee and cakes were delicious. You could spend a day here walking about, picnicking and soaking in the beautiful countryside where Ballindalloch resides. The staff were very kind and made us feel so welcome. We enjoyed the few hours we spent there. Kids would have a blast in their well thought out play area.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- Daniel B24 contributionsA real operating Castle. While staying in Inverness, we had a day where we really didn’t have plans. We knew we wanted to go to Speyside region of Scotland about an hour from Inverness. Known for many great distilleries including Glen Levit. That was in Ballindalloch. We saw that there was the Ballidaloch castle 10 minutes away from the distillery. So we felt that that would make for a well rounded and not only whisky focused trip. That Castle and garden were so much more than we expected. We had tea and lunch in the Castle courtyard cafe. Walked the grounds in the gardens, which were amazing. But walking through the self guided tour of the castle itself felt all of Downton Abbey. This was an amazingly well kept family home where the current Lord and lady still live with their three daughters. During the tour, we walked thru easily 50% of the rooms and got to see lots of family photos and from the introductory video we got to recognize quite a few family members. There was a family portrait of the Lord and his family and a picture of him at age 14 as a royal attendant at Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding ! We noted several photographs that were personalized and autographed by the queen mother. Which we found interesting. After leaving the castle, we decided to go to the Ballindaloch distillery about 2 miles away. And who was leading the tours but the former lady of the castle and mother of the current lord. Lady Clare Russell and her husband. They were an amazing, engaging couple, who, for her part, Claire had lived in the castle since age 4. we received so much history of both the distillery and the castle from the people who live there. She literally took 15 minutes after the tour visiting with us When asked about all the pictures, we found out the Queen mother and Lady Clare were great friends and Lady Clare was on the queens mother’s staff for many years. As an event planner and a floral designer. If you can get on one of the tours with them leading it, it is a chance of a lifetime. The staff at the distillery and the castle were wonderfully welcoming. We took what was going to be a one hour stop and turned it into three hour adventure between the castle and the distillery Cannot recommend it any higher If you can get on one of the tours with them on it .Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 May 2024
- Alison PElgin, United Kingdom46 contributionsBeautiful, well worth a visitBeautiful castle and grounds. Lovely to see inside the Castle especially as the family still live there. Like the fact that you can wander round at your own pace and the information sheets in each room were full of information. The garden to the side was ablaze with colour. The walled garden was so neat and tidy and come the summer with all the roses out will be worth seeing. . . Beautiful walks too. The cafe was lovely too, friendly staff and served promptly. . . along with good food.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 May 2024
- Deso23Hong Kong, China763 contributionsA very nice castle within the area with a nice boutique style cafeThis was the first day we arrived in Speyside and after being picked up from the Aviemore station, on our way to the Craigellachie Hotel, we went past this beautiful castle. As we still have most of the afternoon free, we decided to visit after check in. First surprise for us at the gateway where we purchased our entrance tickets was that the staff there has lived in Hong Kong previously and we had a brief chat about the places when he was there... small world indeed. The castle exhibited rooms and collections of the owners who still live in the castle. No photos were allowed inside to respect the privacy of the family but the tour was absolutely pleasant and it is interesting to see those rooms with different themes where some still remained in its original layout from the past. We also had a good meal at the Courtyard cafe which serves simple yet delicious sandwiches. There is also a souvenir section where you can get some small items to remember this place. Definitely recommend if you are within this area.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- Elaine HDumfries and Galloway, United Kingdom10 contributionsA fairytale homeLovely unplanned visit during a stay at Carr bridge. We were supposed to be going to Cawdor and came across Ballindalloch. It was great surprise to find a real fairy tale castle in such a beautiful setting. The gardens are interesting and well maintained every where has a personal touch making such a difference from other stately homes we have been to. Blessed with good weather we did the river walk, again well maintained and most enjoyable. Very nice tearoom with friendly staff the audio film worth watching giving a good overview in about ten minutes. This lovely place is well worth a visit it has such a comfortable homely feeling about it. Sorry we never saw the interior but as we are rather elderly we ran out of steam. Many thanks for our four hour visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 June 2024
- Alasdair R41 contributionsVery pleasant surpriseExpectations were not that high but decided to stop on-route elsewhere. Congratulations to the current owner on providing visitors to not only an insight to their “modernised” castle/home full of history but the wider estate including lovely grounds/gardens and a new distillery. Make sure you watch the informative AudioVideo presentation before exploring the house and grounds.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 June 2024
- C O52 contributionsDefinately visit - you won't be disappointedMy third time visiting the area but first time at Ballindalloch Castle. I can't believe l haven't been before now. What a fabulous place. The grounds are just immaculate, the gardens stunning and the castle so historical. The castle tour is done in your own time and the information sheets in every room tell you everything you need to know. The rooms were just stunning. It's so nice that this is a lived in property with the owners in their own quarters. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The river walk was on the flat and really easy to just saunter along and take in the views. The cafe provided a very enjoyable coffee and delicious cakes to end our visit. The toilets were amazing! Well done to everyone involved.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024
- Gillian SScottish Borders, United Kingdom83 contributionsBeautiful gardens - smell the roses! From the tree lined drive in, the rose covered estate cottages, and the fragrant and peaceful walled garden the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle are a joy. The Walled Garden tho clearly designed and planned, feels relaxed and in this month incredibly fragrant. A beautiful array of roses for you to swoon over and maybe think I could do some of this at home in my garden! We didn't realise there was a plan available for the garden until we visited the shop & cafe later - would have been helpful to have it on arrival at the gate or be directed to the shop first. Cafe was excellent- delicious panini and a coffee and reasonably priced too. Will definitely visit again and go in the Castle next time.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 July 2024
- Joanna P4 contributionsBest visit in Scotland so farWe walked the lovely dog walk first then left her in the car under the big tree and visited the house. It was beautiful, not too big, furnishing and furniture just right and lots of rooms to see, all equally charming. History was aplenty too, including medals, in fact interest for both of us and free to enjoy and wander both house and outstanding gardens - highlight of our Scottish trip!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 July 2024

The website advertised this attraction as dog welcoming.... "Responsible dog owners and their best friends are always welcome although dogs (other than guide dogs) are not permitted in all areas of the garden nor inside the castle" .... however when you recieve the map, after you have paid your entry fee, you then discover that your dog is only allowed on ONE walk that is outside the car park. This was not shared at the admission hut, nor is it clear on the web site that shows the walks.
We had to ask where we could go with dogs at the cafe after seeing the 'no dogs' sign upon approaching the grounds. While we appreciate the need to keep dogs under control and on leads, especially to safeguard the red squirrels, we would suggest that having to pay the same price as other visitors, but being limited to a single 30 min walk, (half of which is on the road to enter the site), and access to a field with a labyrinth mown in, (the photo shows how extensive this is!) no water bowls or water top up facilities, is a gross over representation of the term 'dog welcoming'. On the positive side, there were plenty of dog poo bins!!!!
We can't give any more stars as we were unable to make it past the car park as we didn't think it was appropriate to leave the dog in the car when it was 27 degrees outside.

Thank you for your feedback. It is always helpful to get an insight into visitors’ experiences. We are sorry to hear that you left Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens unhappy.
We do strive to ensure that our visitors, via the website and then at the Admissions Hut, are equipped from the start with all the information they need to make the most of their visit to Ballindalloch. This information includes a map of the Gardens, provided upon arrival as well as downloadable from the website, that sets out the extensive area as well as a walking routes that one can enjoy with your dog.
Thank you very much for your suggestion about a water station for dogs, and we will see how we might sensibly implement that next for season.

We have been going to Portknockie for 23 years and used to take my 96 year old mother daughter son in law and 2 grandchildren .
During all this time we have seen many many castles then i stumbled upon a brochure about Ballindalloch and Gardens and my husband and i decided to visit today.
Sadly mum is no longer with us and the family decided to holiday in the Peak District.
I would like to say how impressed we were from the gentleman at the entrance to the very nice gardener who was doing an amazing job of the grass cutting it to perfection.
We stopped off at the tearoom after seeing the Castle which was stunning had a nice slice of Strawberry/cream Victoria Sponge cake tea and coffee which was delicious.
After that much needed break we went to the Walled Gardens and took loads of photographs what a place.
Last but not least were the very well kept toilets which were a credit to whoever looks after them.
The 1 thing just a wee niggle is on route to Walled Garden there is only 1 bench which in heat of 33c was totally inadequate so perhaps another couple of benches for people with disabilities would be an asset .

Visited the gardens here with family on a lovely mild day at the end of September and really enjoyed it. Exceptionally well maintained, pleasant walks, and the walled garden was an oasis, sheltered and warm, roses and clematis still blooming, children exploring the steps and arches in safety. Play area for children handy, though not offering as much for them as normal, to avoid infection risk, which is sensible. Only criticism was that the toddler swing was a rather awkward construction and our grandchild did not feel comfortable with it, sadly. Tearoom and gift shop on a one way system, and is carefully watched to maintain social distancing, but afforded a much appreciated and delicious cuppa and cake at the end of the afternoon.

Lovely 15c fortress tower with the usual Jacobean & Victorian extensions & improvements. A satisfying number of dinky turrets, winding staircases & beautifully furnished rooms to explore. No guided tours, so you are free to explore, but sadly no photographs inside. Excellent value café - can recommend their soup & sandwich combo. Walled garden slightly away from the castle & pleasant, open lawn with a few flowers - not as stunning as some of the local castle gardens. Ballindaloch is part of the Historic Houses group. If you are touring Aberdeenshire castles, would recommend you get membership - we saved 6 entry fees, totalling £127!

The welcome to this castle was so warm. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The introductory video was very informative. You are able to visit many rooms in the house including the nursery which has been retained as a childhood museum. The pictures, photographs and information boards were excellent. The walks in the grounds were well marked and a plan of routes was provided. The gardens were beautiful. The cafe was very good. Food was served in proper crockery, no take away cups etc. There was plenty of choice for lunch and the cakes were very tasty.
It was good to see a Historic House which is still used as a family home.
All in all a fantastic experience.

The chance to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a Scottish Estate walking the grounds through the Rose Garden, Rockery, Forest Trail and Riverside Walk. Agreed, we were given a very special opportunity to visit the Gardens before they open to the General Public in about 2 weeks' time, but this is a wonderful place to enjoy and savour everything good about the Scottish Country Estate maintained in absolutely immaculate condition. An real credit to the Head Gardener, Kevin.
The wonderful opportunity that was provided to our party by all the members of the Macpherson-Grant family along with the time given to us by Constance Schimmeyer, Head of Tourism & Marketing, Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens will be long in our memories.
If you are planning a visit or tour to Speyside do defintely include Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens on your itinerary; you will not be disppointed.

What a delight. This castle, not inundated with hordes of visitors even in August, is filled with wonderful paintings and objects, and yet feels very much a home. Surrounded by gardens, including a beautiful walled rose garden, it is very much worth a visit. The tearoom is also excellent.

I have to start with an apology, in our eagerness to visit the 'facilities' we missed the 'no dogs' sign 🥺 however, happy to say our wee broon dug was on a short lead and only walked on the path. A lovely young lady pleasantly showed us the error of our ways and we slunk off to the bits we were allowed in!
An absolutely stunning castle and more importantly, a family home. The short audio-visual film was so interesting and, because we couldn't go inside the castle, because of aforementioned dog, let us (separately because of you know who) see some of the beautiful interiors and treasures. We also had a separate wander through the gardens which were stunning. The riverside walk was shady and pretty; we sat down at the river and watched some canoeists.
Friendly lady at the entry kiosk, the two ladies in the tearoom were full of fun and ably supplied delicious cakes and hot drinks which we had out at the picnic area, and I think I asked the young shop assistant who previously gave directions, tens of questions which she efficiently answered. There are some pretty bits and pieces and confectionery etc. in the shop.
A lovely visit to a castle we embarrassingly knew nothing about. Making up for it now and telling everyone. Just remember to read the signs!

Had the displeasure of dealing with the rude guy at the ticket booth today. Paying to go into a garden which is average at best, and during covid you should be thanking people for keeping you in business. If you’re having a bad day that’s your problem not mine. Been before and won’t be back.

Please accept our apologies - we have only just seen your question, so hope that we're not too late in volunteering the information you need. We have a large designated dog-walking area beside the car park, but otherwise dogs are not allowed in the grounds, either off or on leads. You can download the map of our grounds and gardens from the 'Information for Visitors' section on our website. Please do contact us if there's anything else that you'd like to know.

Question for previous visitors who have visited with children under 10...
Hi I'm planning visiting the lovely castle & grounds in July & wondered what there is to do for children . Did your children enjoy the visit , what is there for them to do ? Some feedback on this would be helpful so we can judge if we should or should not take our nephews and neice, ages 5, 8 and 10. We'd like to make an afternoon of it ... but will come without the kids if they'll be bored easily.
Thank you !

Hi there - unfortunately I seem to remember that there was a sign saying not to feed the animals, but maybe if you contact the castle they might be able to arrange something? As far as I'm aware they didn't do pony rides but there are places nearby that do (I'm sure google will bring some up).
Go-kart ages, hmm good question, a bit old for my five year old - I'd say something like 7 through to maybe 12? We didn't really look that closely since we weren't using them but that's the size I'd guess at.
Our five year old really enjoyed it - I should have said there's even a grass maze. Not the most difficult thing in the world since it depends on the height of the grass, but if you've not done it before its a good way to spend 15 minutes or so.

back in the early seventies we rented a two cottages next to each other with our family, the cottages were part of the estate of the castle but were sold to developers who rented them for holiday lets, we had a great holiday a Castle etcnd were a bit of a novelty because we had rented a large minibus to travel up from Kent, we visited the castle the fee then was £1 to visit and we were met at the door by the lady of the Castle who I believe was Clare, she was so friendly and welcoming and came and visited the cottages. I am a full time entertainer and I occasionally work on Fred Olsens Cruise ships, I was on Breamar and Lo & Behold the ship featured Ballindalloch Castle etc. it bought back some great memories, so glad you are still opening to the public and are the cottages still there

Hello,
I wondered what was available to see at Ballindalloch castle during the winter months. If the castle isn't open, is it possible to walk around the gardens and is the cafe open? I wondered this for a Saturday? I'm confused because it says the castle isn't open til Good Friday but then reviews have been left in January.
Many thanks,
Steph

Hello Steph, and thank you for your enquiry. I'm afraid that neither the Castle nor the Grounds are open until Good Friday, and we are open from then until the last day of September; the reviews that you have seen were late arrivals, left out of season.
We hope very much that you will be able to come and see us when we open to the public again - by then, we shall have all our Spring cleaning and grounds work done, and you will be able to enjoy a visit in (hopefully) better weather!
Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you require any further information.
Kind regards.
