Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you want to come here specifically to visit the church's ruins, do so. If you want to ruin the beauty of natural ruinous beauty (like HumbertoM), then stay far, far away; and never venture into the mountains of Jalisco. If you come with a rotten materialist heart, you will be cursed for all eternity. Don't bring your romantic partners here, don't bring your horrible Hollywood sets here. Come as a person who appreciates Beauty and all that Beauty has to offer the human spirit and imagination. Thank you.

A short walk from downtown. There is a fence and wall around the location so enter from the gate on the Calle Rosa Dávalos side. It isn't marked well and I wasn't sure this was the entrance, but I asked a gardner and he confirmed. It's a beautiful place to rest, take photos (especially in a morning or evening light). I could see that this would be a magical backdrop for engagement or wedding photos.

Absolutely worth the visit! The contrast of purple colors of bugamvilias and grayish colors of the unfinished Temple are mesmorizing! Visually stunning and great photo opt...Check the little church on the site, walk around and just breath all of this beauty in!
It is free of charge, it does not feel touristy...locals are just hanging out there enjoying the historical place as much as you are.
We parked outside the Temple and walked the streets of the town. There is a chance you will be the the only tourist there. Nobody speaks English, and everyone is friendly and smily, totally safe. Walk to the town sq., have some coffee, buy local specialty : guayaba or other fruits preserved with sugar...Check the town church ...check the Museo( Rock House)...
We truly enjoyed the little town, and after a few hours there , went back to San Sebastian for our dinner at Montebello. The drive is breathtaking as well!

We came upon the grounds of this unfinished temple quite by accident and like so many other were charmed by its peaceful beauty. I then wrote to archaeologist Joseph Mountjoy who lives in Mascota, asking for some background info. He replied:
"The first stone of the Preciosa Sangre church was placed right at the end of the 19th century, but most of the rest of the construction dates to the first decade of the following century. The idea came from a citizen who wanted to build another big temple for the town. Construction was halted when the Revolution broke out and probably not resumed because of the continuing post-Revolution conflicts, especially in Jalisco."
I think this building project turned out just right. I doubt that Mascota needed another church, but now it has a rather unique "non-ruin" that invites peace and reflection.

I'd never seen anything quite like this. Masses of flowers flowing over ancient walls, with the bright blue sky overhead, no one else around... a respite from the busy little city of Mascota. I only wish we'd had access to information about the site's history. I'm going to look it up online - I just feel like I have to know what's behind the mystery of the temple. We were also struck by the altar of the connected church - a striking visual of religious symbolism.

The beauty of this location is considering it as a photoshoot location. The stone walls and layout is just great to use as location set.

Parked car, saw people inside walking around. Walked around block TWO time looking for entry but every gate appeared to be padlocked. Finally on second time around the gate was pushed open and we entered. No fee and the grounds were in perfect condition. The stones used in the construction were very unusual but overall, thee really wasn't much to see. Try it, you may like it much better than we did.

This church was started in 1800s but halted due to the revolution the town has a beautiful small church so this sight is better as a tourist attraction. The grounds are beautiful with lots of flowers and very peaceful. There is a small chapel and a covered courtyard that looks like it is used for events. It is free and a peaceful place to spend some time.

The ruins of a church that was never finished. Beautiful grounds with colorful bougainvillea highlighted against ancient stone walls and arches. Also a beautifully decorated chape,l a must-see for visitors to Mascota.

Cindy, we've been looking at taking a bus out to San Sebastián and then travel to mascota. Do you know if this is possible. I an not really wanting to do a tour unless necessary, as I love to stop and take photos of everything. Which would bore most people. Thank you for any advice.
