Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The really outstanding part of our visit was our interaction with the staff - super helpful, ready to answer our questions and even finding some extra information from their archives to show us. We spent about an hour in this small, well-curated and highly informative museum. Top marks!

Fascinating place with something for everyone.

The extraordinary quantity and quality of exhibits here more than deserves a visit:
a bugle presented by an Australian sapper stationed here before Galipoli, the crew quarters on a herring smack, the glory days of ocean racing, early photography of the bustling ship yards and dock, and the office of a shipwright.

A very interactive experience that brings history to life with good facilities to seriously research the town archives.

You could easily lose yourself here for an hour or two.

For a free museum in a settlement of this size, this is the business. Refurbed in 2020 from a Lottery Grant, it uses local, individual stories to paint a picture of the fascinating history of the town in an informative, engaging way. Every town should aim for this.

A must visit place!! Just the most fascinating museum of Brightlingsea's maritime heritage. Extremely well presented with very helpful volunteers. Cannot recommend too highly.

Lovely little museum with lots for all ages to do.
Learnt lots about flags and tried some of the activities.
The lady on the front desk could not have been more helpful.
Don't forget to make a little donation on your way out we need places like this.

Visited the museum for the first time today. Very friendly welcome from the volunteers, who told us a little bit about the museum and the different rooms.

The museum is small, but has a lot of interesting and varied information about the town and its history. Easy to read displays and an area to search for more information if you have a particular area of interest or person you want to research.

There is also an area with some local paintings, jewellery and other crafts for sale.

A super, friendly, interesting place and I would highly recommend a visit. It is free, but you can make a donation, which I hope visitors will, so it can stay open.

A relatively new investment and building home to the museum dedicated to the local history. Which you can tell has had good funding and is very modern and informative.

Fun little games and mouse hunt for children (and adults) to enjoy.

As ever with places like this, the people really make the difference! The volunteer ladies were very friendly and informative and make the overall experience 5/5!

A beautifully presented history of Brightlingsea that had us completely absorbed and almost overwhelmed with information. Not to be missed - allow a good hour - it's free, but we just had to make a donation (t'would 'ave been rather mean not to!). The DVD at £2.50 is a bargain.
