I don't know how far out of my way I'd go for this (if it hadn't been part of a tour, I'm certain I would've missed it), but it was definitely worth the shlep. You get a great sense of the French/Normandie coast from this...More

My family loves to climb the steps to the top almost every year. Not this year; "Closed: too windy." (How come a recent poster claims that he loves it in stormy weather?) If you can get past the Cerberus-impersonating, misanthropic, female jobsworth who runs the...More

Although easy to get to, this magical place feels as though you have reached the limit of the world. I have been there in fine sunshine and in furious storms. For me the stormy weather is best as you get a real feel of why...More

This is an amazing lighthouse. Very impressive on the NE corner of the Cherbourg peninsular. There is a small exhibition room but it was closed for lunch when we were there. Amazing seas around the lighthouse, even on a calm day where the different tides...More

We did not go into or up the lighthouse: ferry time dictated that we could only walk around it. It still gets a 5; barfleur + is a beautiful part of the world, and this a part of that. I would suspect that the views...More

We walked from the campsite at Barfleur out to the lighthouse. stunning scenery along the walk and the lighthouse is magnificent. The churning of the seas shows you how important this lighthouse is.

Took our 2 children up this light house. It's a long climb up, I think 349 steps, but once at the top you can see for miles. The light house as parking close by and is free. It's next to some craggy rocks so great...More

A nice and easy walk from Barfleur to the lighthouse along the seashore, 30-40 minutes one way. Not exactly savage, as the path goes through several campings and cross a car road at one point, but beautiful anyway and it gets a little "savager" closer...More

I didn't actually climb the lighthouse, although I'm sure it would be fun to do. What I did do was walk around the breakwater, hang out on the beach, and visit the little town, all highlights of a drive my husband and I took along...More

This tremendous lighthouse, the third tallest of traditional types in the world, is a must if you're visiting the charming, history-rich little backwater of Barfleur. The wee shop has a small exhibition of technological adjuncts, including a portion of a Fresnel lens (there are working...More
