We visited this small but perfect Chateau vineyard in September 2019.
It was a great experience with perfect hosts providing a personal tour of the vines and a knowledgeable and interesting explanation of the French wine industry, the vines and the growing and harvesting process followed by a tour of the winery. Afterwards we had a wine tasting experience which was great fun and educational: again the staff, location and setting were excellent with some great wines to try as well. Being one of the smaller Chateau's and vineyards you can see the pride they have in the wine they produce and also the quality they provide in hosting their guests. The Chateau itself is not open to the public as it is a private residence, however, this did not diminish the fun we had for the afternoon.

We visited Chateau Paloumey in August as part of a private van tour provided by the Bordeaux Visitors bureau. This was the second winery we visited that morning and found the chateau to much nicer than the one we visited prior. The proprietor has invested heavily in the property and this was the only place that reminded me of the upscale wineries in Napa Valley California near where I am from.
The best part was the native French speaker tour guide who also spoke perfect English. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the region and the property.
Sometime I would like to return with a large picnic basket! I attached a photo of our guide who was most gracious.

Janice our guide, was excited to have us taste here. She had been here before and she was friendly with one of the guides who would take us through their tasting. We were running late and skipped the vineyard portion. Just off into the production and barrel rooms. Here we got a unique tasting of the 2018 vintage straight form the barrel. Not due to be bottled until next year. This is pretty unusual here in France. But a bigger surprise waited, they also had American Oak barrels. The oak is from the state of Missouri, shipped as planks and made into barrels here in France by the same makers who make their French Oak barrels. They use about fifty each year. She also told us the French barrels cost 1,000 € each, while the American is 350€ each. The American Oak is from roughly 80 to 90 year old trees. The French trees are near 250 years old. Also, for every tree cut down in France, 3 are planted as replacements. That is a lot of information. The American Oak wine tasted fruity and the nose was pineapple, the French was smoother and more earthy. But, sorry to say, I did not like any of the wines they produced.

When Martine Cazeneuve bought Chateau Paloumey in 1989, the property had no winery and no vines. She and her colleagues have built the winery up since then, effectively from scratch.
It is still largely family-owned and run (though Mme Cazeneuve herself has moved on to greater things) - and it shows in the personal and passionate approach that is taken, both to the wine-making, and to the guests, like us, who come to visit the property.
My wife and I were among a group from London. We had come to Bordeaux for a long weekend, to visit 5 wineries for tours and tastings. This was our fourth visit of the weekend, following visits to two wineries in St Emilion the day before, and a trip to the much larger and grander Chateau Pichon Baron in Pauillac that morning.
So we were, perhaps, not the easiest group to enthuse, having already had 3 very detailed explanations of the wine-making process. However, our charming and knowledgeable guide, Camille (a dancer in her spare time) managed it with ease.
She took us first into the vines themselves, to feel the soil, to see the fresh new growth, and to help us to visualise the varoius steps that would be taken to get the very best possible results from the grapes.
Then she took us into the vat rooms and barrel rooms, at each stage giving us something new and different - eg about how to handle the grapes to get the most flavour from the berries, and about how the different types of wood and different firings of the barrels affect the taste of the wine - to think about and to absorb .
Finally, we tasted the wines, 2 from the property here in Medoc, and one each from the family's properties in Moulis and in Margaux. The tasting room opens on to a terrace, with a fine view out across the vineyards: and we were joined there by the management, who also managed to comunicate their enthusiasm for their art without descinding into sales talk.
Ailes de Paloumey is the second wine of the Chateau, predominantly Merlot. It is lighter and not so much for keeping - and so priced accordingly. Chateau Paloumey is the cru borgeois first wine of the chateau, with a greater proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to provide more backbone. Chateau Bessane is the wine of the property in Margaux: and Chateau La Garricq the wine of the property in Moulis-en-Médoc.
The greater proportion of of Petit Verdot in La Garricq gives it a slightly more spicy and more rounded character, and we and our friends found it the most interesting of the four - which is why we ended up buying a magnum of the 2009 to drink with lunch at the property, and some cases of the 2011 for shipping back to England.
Overall, our tour was a delight, and we woud heartily recommend others to include this enchanting property in their itinerary, amoung the other, grander and more famous houses of the Bordeaux region.

We went here with a tour group and were spendidly surprised at how awesome this tour was. Silva(spelling?) Was our tour guide and a complete delight. We started with a tour of the vineyard where he explained how the vines grow and how they must prune each one year after year to get the perfect yield. We then talked about harvest and bottling. We were taken inside to see the barrels of wine where he talked in depth about the toasting of the barrels and how it changes the wine. We then moved into the tasting room where we tasted two delicious wines. Silva gave us a fantastic wine tasting 101 lesson for those who wanted it. Silva was very knowledgeable and you could tell passionate about wine. His laid back attitude, wittiness, and lessons on the wine made this our favorite trip to Bordeaux and gave us a story every time we open a bottle of Paloumey. I can not recommend this place enough.

Hello,
Sulvain and I thank you very much for your kind review. We are happy to hear that you learned a little bit about our work in the vineyard and with the barrels.
Hope we will have the chance to see again in Paloumey.

I have had wines from this Château before and I was looking forward to visiting. They were very helpful and enthusiastic about helping us set up our visit ahead of time. When we arrived, we were greeted by Charlotte and she was amazing! Her knowledge of the winery and about the Bordeaux and Medoc region was perfect. We had been on several other wine tours before but Charlotte showed us a couple really cool things, including the bottling process happening on the property. That is not something I have seen at other wineries. The wine at this chateau is incredible. And the lunch she provided for us was delicious - plenty of sliced meats and cheeses, and breads and veggies. It was really a terrific experience and would recommend to anyone interested in Bordeaux wine!

I visited the Chateau at the beginning of August. It was a spontaneous visit, without a previous booking so I could only participate in the wine tasting. Now I know that next time I'll make a prior reservation.
I really liked the wine tasting with Hugo - a lovely intern at the Chateau. He knew a lot about the wine and patiently explained all details and answered all questions. You can tell he's very much into the topic and is passionate about it.
The facility itself is quiet and very neat and clean. I recommend it to everyone who appreciates quiet and pleasant places.

We had a tour around the vineyards and had a great tasting of 3 wines made at the chateau. Our guide was Margot who told us some great insights about the estate. They use 10% of American oak in their wine making process which is rare in the Medoc area. Went home with 6 bottles of la Garricq and a magnum. Would definitely visit again! Thanks a lot!

Can you get here by public transport from Bordeaux centre?
Written 10 July 2019
There is the coach TransGironde number 705 which goes from Bordeaux to Pauillac.
The name of the station in Bordeaux is Place Ravezzi (accessible with Tram C), get off in Ludon Médoc at Château Paloumey's station.
This is a departmental coach so make sure you check the frequency of the service and its timetable. Don't hesitate to contact us if needs be.
Looking forwards to giving you a tour of Château Paloumey,
