Well it's an extordinary design on top hill and for your inside entry only for Muslim. Also in general if visit any Mosque than insure you wear full cover cloths. Short and sleeveless and open hair is not allowed.

The mosque is open for non-muslim visitors every morning from 8.30 to 11(except Fridays). The interior is fantastic! Without any doubts this is a MUST-SEE monument of the modern Islamic art.

I live in Muscat and saw this Mosque since it was under construction. But day before just by chance I was able to visit it. I even did not think that it is allowed for non-Muslim visitors. The Mosque was designed by an Iranian architect and I can say he is really an extremely talented person! We first entered the Main hall for prayers and were absolutely shocked by the simple beauty. White marble was combined with the Swarovsky's chandeliers in gold plated frames. Three big domes were gold plated and allowed the pure day light to shine in the hall. The third biggest in the world carpet with an absolutely amazing design in a beautiful pastel colors cannot take away your attention. Oh, the marble carvings are stunning!!!
The Mosque is built by Saud Bahwan, local Omani businessmen, and was opened one day before Ramadan this year 2014 but there are still some little work going. So, some Indian worker came and told us that it is not allowed for women to enter the main hall. We left it and met some other person working in library. He kindly escorted us back to the main hall, gave a short info about the Mosque and made us sure that we can visit the Mosque at any day before 12 noon time.
He then lead us to the big library and we had a nice conversation with the Library's Director. There are two floors in the library and you can find any books about Islam, history and many other subjects. The library has a very rich collection of Koran. Women and kids can visit the library too as they have their own room there. Once we enter a small room with the books in English language, I saw a heavy books on the upper shelve and ask what is going to be...It was a books for people who cannot see. But they can read the books using their fingers sensitivity. Beautiful library! Oh, yes! They are going to open some kind of Art School there. So, the children from small age can learn drawings!
At the end of our tour we went to the ladies prayer hall. It is much smaller but very beautiful! Lovely and very soft carpet in the same pastel colors..white marble, gold, Swarovsky chandeliers and a lot of day light!
It was my first visit of this mosque and for sure I will go there again. As my first impression, I can say that this place is not just a Mosque. It is the center of Science and Arts.

An architectural masterpiece, placed in one of the most visible places in the city. Stunningly beautiful in day time and gorgeously glittering at night.
Also, as a member of the design / project team of the Mosque I am extremely proud to pen these words here and read wonderful experiences by the visitors all over the world.
For benefit of the readers, I would like to note some facts about Al Ameen Mosque, as I have read few inaccurate details about the mosque in previous reviews.
This mosque was designed by a local architectural consultancy firm, who has also design the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat. And they are NOT the designers / Architects of Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.
Mosque was built ( civil works and interior finishing works) by local construction firms. Few overseas companies were involved for specialist works.
Minarets (two tall towers) are NOT the tallest in Oman and shorter than the minarets in Grand Mosque.
Mosque exterior is finished with white marble from Italy. For the interiors, various marble types were used imported from all over the world. External floor marble is from India.
External side of the 3 big domes are covered in gold glass mosaics. Also, inner surface of the dome is covered with same gold mosaics. (what you see from the main prayer hall)
Central courtyard ("sahan") has an under floor cooling system, which keeps the marble floor at a 'walkable' temperature, even in extremely hot summer.
Chandeliers in the Main & Ladies prayer areas were designed and manufactured in Austria. All external hanging lights were made in Oman.
Carpet in the main prayer hall is said to be the 3rd largest hand woven carpet in the world (as on date). Designed and woven in Iran.
All wood works (doors/ ceilings/cupboards) are in teak wood and all were made in Oman.
All metal doors (except the gates) are in bronze and made in Germany.
Construction was started in Nov 2008 and opened to the public in June 2014.

This fairly new Mosque sits a little above the city with the Hajar Mountains whims making a stunning location and with great city views.
The white complex is accessed. Is steps at the front (there is a lift for those who need it). The outer courtyard looks onto the main doors of the triple domed central prayer hall. Enter via the left door to walk a marked route through the mosque itself. Take time to study the decoration. The more you look the more you see.
Few tourists visit yet it is so well designed and executed and rich in Koranic decoration, chandeliers and carpets. You’ll probably get the place to yourself. Be sure to view the library with over 20000 Islamic texts to study. Even if you can’t read Arabic it’s worth looking. Staff are friendly and emptily and photos are allowed throughout the complex.
You can visit each day from 0800 to 1100 except Friday. You MUST be covered up, so no bare legs and arms and scarves to cover heads for ladies. I don’t think they have coverings to borrow there so plan ahead.
Come back at night. It’s illuminated to incredible effect. Also worth taking photos from around the city at dusk with the lit up mosque in front of the mountains and the mighty Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque lit below.
Car parking in street and car park outside. Taxis will bring you here. Toilets on site. No refreshments onsite.

This mosque doesn't seem to appear on the tourist map and it is not included on any of the offered city tours. But it is open to the public (upto 11am except Fridays) and to my mind, a non-Muslim, stunning.
We went at 8am, and maintenance staff aside we were the only shoes in the rack (you take shoes off to go inside).
No admission fee, no other tourists, superb interior - what's not to like? (I preferred it to the Sultan's Mosque - though it doesn't have the gardens)

All the mosques in Muscat are so beautiful. Sultan Al Qaboos mosque is the prettiest but this one is charming too. Looks really beautiful with lights in the night, provides the most amazing view.

Of course everybody is visting the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, but do not forget to visit this mosque too.
Why? Because it is also original in its design. It is nearly everywhere white.
A spectacular view when sun is shining.
And take your time to look around.
My wife and I have seen very few tourists during our visit.
Ladies to be dressed with covered head, arms and legs. You will be watched.

Unlike most mosques in Oman this one is open for visitors. You can go see it between 08:00 and 11:00. Exterior is of white marble with 3 domes which are lit at night. Amazing. Inside also beautiful. Definitely worth a visit. You can do it in 20 minutes. Very friendly staff.

Is this mosque within walking distance from the port? We dock at 9am & wonder if we have time to get to this mosque before it closes at 11 am

Depends on which port? if it is Sultan Qabous port then you must take a taxi it is a bit far to walk (20 min by car)

I assume you ask from the airport as you will have some time there between planes? The Mosque is only open 8am-11am (I think) but is worth a visit. Taxis are inexpensive and totally negotiable so from the airport I'd haggle for a round trip. 12km - in the previous answer sounds about right to me.

Hi,
yes the mosque is open to non muslims. You just have to bring your own suitable clothes, as they don't rent any.
I went there in the morning, not sure what the official opening timings are. But you should be good to go between 8.30 and 11 am, Saturday to Thursday. If you are not sure go to the library first, there is a really friendly Egyptian there who will answer all your questions. Enjoy the tour :)

For men it's open all day long but not for wome . Visiting hours from 7am till 11am for both men and women. Being a Muslim doesn't make a difference.

A map would be useful. It is very visible but access from Sultan Qaboos street and The Expressway but the detail of actually getting there is as normal in Oman (i.e. lack of, or poor, road signs).
