Anzio was a very nice small Italian town, no sight of tourists, when arriving at the train station, a 15 minute walk down hill and you are at the beach. We paid "negotiating" 6 EUROS for two adults and toddler to be on the private beach, in an inlet. The water was crystal clear, sand was nice, very nice chairs, umbrellas. There was even a paid shower. Was really very nice. It was advised that about 1 km down near the light house there was good sea shells to be collected. The inlet sea floor was with small smooth rocks. I wouldn't want to return to Rome, because it is so "busy" but I would re visit Anzio, as it was warm, peaceful, and very well kept

After walking through Rome for 3 days we looked for a location we could go to relax. we looked up some beaches and found one at Anzio Italy. it was an hour out of Rome from the Termini and only cost 7 euros' round trip per person.
Anzio is also the location that Allied forces came ashore during the World War and there is an American cemetery at Anzio as well. we had planned to walk to the cemetery but ran out of time.
After walking to the Termini and figuring out how to get a ticket to Anzio we had to figure out which train. the train doesn't say it is going to Anzio it says its final destination which is Nettuno. So once we found the train we were to be on, it was an hour ride on the train, through scenic Italian countryside. One of the local people on the train informed us not to get off at the first Anzio station but to get off at the second. this was helpful as it saved us a walk.
Upon arrival you walk out of the train station and directly in front of you is a street going down to the center of town. this street is called via del Pinneta. this will take you toward the port and the beaches as well as a little market place with restaurants and shops. it is only a 5 minute walk and all down hill.
Once at the beach, there are numerous beach chairs and umbrellas. it is a quaint little town and the beach is beautiful. the sand is brown so a little different from the southern beaches we are used to but still beautiful. there is a little inlet that has been made for people to enjoy the water. the beach chairs and umbrellas were not very expensive I think about 15-20 euro for the 4 of us and 2 umbrellas.
We enjoyed the day just lying around and relaxing. when we were done we enjoyed some Gelato and walked back to the train station. we even remarked that it would be nice to stay at Anzio and then just take the train an hour to tour Rome. Maybe next time we are in Italy.

The beach is beautiful! The day we went was second opening day for the umbrella service. Three umbrellas cost 21 euro at lido garden. The food there was good also with clam linguini for around 12 euros and a lot of seafood on menu. Be aware that you need to purchase return train ticket from Roma termini because there isn’t a train station at Anzio/colony stop. Only an on/ off platform .

As much as we loved Rome for it’s historical sights, great food, people, shops and energy, after a few days we decided to escape to the sea, for a break.
The goal was to swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Having spent a day here in late September, I would love to come back for a week and do the reverse, do day trips into Rome.
This seaside town is lovely. Only an hour by train. Get off the train, walk downhill, walk past multicoloured fishing boats and there’s the beach. A bonus are the ruins that dot the shoreline, being excavated and reportedly are remnants of villas that Caesar and Nero and the various emperors used to escape the heat of Rome.
Warm sea, gelato, ruins, what more can you ask for!

My first visit to Anzio was on a hot summer day, to experience the seaside the way many Romans do who don't go to Ostia or Freggene (it's only an hour's drive). All the beachfront is privatised: you pay an entrance fee, rental for a lounger, umbrella, table, towel, shower - you and hundreds of others, there's hardly enough space between chairs to walk to the shallow water! The atmosphere is relaxed and cheerful, but noisy, in typical Italian fashion.
Other times, I just went to Anzio to catch a hydrofoil or ferry to the islands, but I did take the time for a walk around the colourful port (there are still many fishing boats as well) and have an espresso at one of the many bars facing the jetty.
It's a low key, popular destination with Italian families.
Of course, Anzio was also a famous and bloody WWII battle, so the beachhead and cemeteries are well signposted and may be of interest to history buffs.

I visited Anzio, the first time by chance, driving trough it in order to arrive in Nettuno, but my attention was soon driven to a few attractions on a short walking distance from city centre,so I decided to visit it with my girlfriend during a late summer Sunday.
In September most of the privatized beachfront "Bagni" are starting to close showing a very romantic and a bit nostalgic atmosphere, subject of many italian movies.
The nice point is that you can spend all the time you want walking on the beach, enjoying the great view of the neronian port and the bay of Anzio.
I would suggest you to park onn the outhern side of the town in nthe area of the archaeological area of Nerone's villa, visit it, enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful view, during my visit there I was impressed by the kindness of the people posted at the entrance, and of the site distribution.
Nerone's villa was impressive and the aerial pics and the model of the reconstruction will give you a great idea of it.
The library, the mute arc, the therms and the port installation will make you wonder, about the greatness of the Romans and it's knowledge of engineering.
Finished the visit of the site I suggest to walk down to the park, passing by the lighthouse noticing the column at it's gate.
Onn the seafront terrace of the park you'll find a statue of the most illustrious citizen of the city, Nerone, and looking around you'll see more of the port installation.
If you want you can see the Neronian villa even from the beach, walking on the nearby beach.
During my visit there I spent time on the beach enjoying the sea and the lovely air, and later on walking to the modern port a gelato on a non industrial producer.
After some romantic walking there is still time for some shopping just around the center of the city, you'll reach close to the port.
Fishing boats, people enjoying a walk, children playing and a calm atmosphere makes it just a lovely place.
Restaurants are all over the area, so you can choose what you prefer, even if I keep suggesting the Hosteria dei Pescatori, sitting in one of the inner streets, right on the main square but with the privacy I prefer to keep.
I love this atmosphere and will visit it in future, even just for a dinner or a fast stroll.

... and we were not disappointed at all...
Accomodation fine, beaches are great, the harbour is a place I can enjoy almost daily - fisherman repairing their nets, the Italians having their chats, the small and bigger fishing-oats going in and out - the seagulls, the sailors sorting the fish - everything is always changing - and still the same - NICE! even "romantic"

Took a chance and did a day trip out of Rome to see what this town was like. After doing some exploring, I discovered the waterside and it was like being back in Capri again. The turquoise color of the water was not to be believed and having a light lunch at a local caffe was just the most relaxing experience. If you want to just wander and sit seaside this is the place to go for a quick change of pace from Rome.

Where the fishing boats are, away from the catamaran ferry and the yachts, there is a wonderful feeling. Lots of roman families strolling the pier in the evening. The restaurants here are, one gets the impression, used by locals. Our favourite had no menus - the head waiter simply tells you what they have on. We followed a basic system in '97 : eat what ever fish specials are on. The seafood salads of squid and octopus and prawns and mussels and etc were wonderful.
The pasta vongole has never been surpassed.
The old port is on the opposite side to the beach. It's easy to imagine the houses of Nero, Caligula and Cicero in Antium (classical name of Anzio) coming to the port for fish and so on. Nothing pretentious going in here. Loved it, but no need to return.

Anizo a beautiful city and a lovely place. But only for Italians.
Arrogance in shops, restaurants, hotels, the beach and from all citizens. Here you are not welcome as a tourist.
We have been vacationing for 12 years in Italy. This year we chose Anzio. 7 days where we do not feel welcome.
