Travertine Stone Lab Tour from Ascoli Piceno

Get off the typical tourist trail, and visit a travertine rock quarry, during your stay in scenic Ascoli Piceno. A number of Italy’s famous landmarks are constructed from the stone, and travertine buildings can be seen all over the city center. Begin this morning tour at the Frazione Rosara quarry, where your guide—the quarry owner—will share information about its history. Then, you’ll be given chisels and other tools and can try your hand at sculpting the stone.

The ceiling was being renovated when we visited, so it was draped with a large net, but this did not obscure one's view. This is a beautiful cathedral, with magnificent mosaics, located in the Old Town of Ascoli Piceno.

I have visited this church and it's fabulous crypt a number of times over the last fifty years and noticed the slow but consistent restoration work going on. On this visit we were treated to an invitation to join in prayer with Templars in the crypt.

The Cathedral of Ascoli Piceno is an unexpected pleasure. It is a magnificent church with a wonderful surprise in the Crypt. The mosaics are absolutely wonderful. Do not miss visiting the Cathedral while in Ascoli Piceno.

This church is big, medieval and feels very peaceful. It has all sorts of surprises from the beautiful mosaics on the ceiling at the back of the church and in the crypt to the extraordinary but simple cross in the side chapel.

Visited last evening. Was surprised how late the churches stay open here or maybe it was because it was a feast day. In any event, it was lovely in the evening. The side altar is beautiful and the crypt was just totally unexpected. I was going to skip it, but thought "I'm here- may as well". It is a large space with reddish marble columns and amazing mosaics - dedicated to St. Emidio. Definitely worth a visit.
