Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Italians are very friendly! The cost of living is low and there are many restaurants and bars within walking distance. The location of this place is great-very central in the walking street. Italian driving is crazy: the roads are narrow and cars park on the streets by necessity (all apartments). Walking on these slanted cobblestones streets is hard on the knees for us older folks. Overall a great experience.

I wrote my MA dissertation on the Beneventan Lombards. It was so fascinating to be in the Centro Historico, where so much of that fantastic history took place. It is a fabulous mix of Roman, Lombard, Norman, Early Modern, and Modern edifices, and every corner, alleyway, and piazza serves as a photographer's dream. If you are in Naples or on the Amalfi coast, please take the hour or so long drive inland to this beautiful place. The problem is that most travelers do not know the massive historical significance of this city, and that is a tragedy.

Benevento is one of the oldest, ongoing towns in Italy and Europe. An important city in antiquity it flourished due to its fortunate position on the Appian way connecting it to Rome. It has been honoured by several emperors and was an important and independent principality in the middle ages, before succumbing to the authority of the Papal states and then Italy. So a place with such a rich history has some important things to offers for lovers of history.
The old town boats the best preserved triumphal arch (The Arch of Trajan) and houses important churches (Saint Sophia stans out) and monasteries. The walk around town will take you no more than an hour. You can also visit the amphitheatre and the larger archaeological sites if that is of interest. Not a very long visit. The city is 50 minutes drive for Naples. Highly recommend it as a visit destination, en route to somewhere else.

Nice things to see - beautiful, quite simple church and an old monastery (now museum) for example, but of course in Italy there is A LOT of historical places so there was nothing mind blowing! It was good that the street was only for pedestrians, so it is nice to walk around and take your time.
We visited there in a bit of a hurry so maybe there is a lot more to see..

No matter how beautiful the monuments are, you cannot bag them home. But you can take what you received during your trip: like kindness, friendliness and memories of smiles.
Despite it’s size, the historical center of Benevento has enough patrimonies to delight a tourist for at least 2 days. That was what we did and the experience was disappointing and disconcerting. Why?
The number of nice people we met could be counted with one hand. We love meeting people and making friends. Hence it definitely left a mark in us when we find a town full of suspicious glances, stern facial expressions and unfriendly behavior. It seems this place does not need or want tourists/outsiders in their town.

Benevento is a very pleasant town if you are exploring Campania. The Historic centre has several interesting attractions. The VIII century church is quite moving, and the Roman theatre is very interesting and less crowded than in other places. As a wine region capital, there are unfortunately very few enotecas to try or buy wines.

Benevento old town is a clean and pleasant place to spend an hour or two. We had drinks at the local cinema(of all places). Some of the back street are quite dirty and dark. But generally we did not feel unsafe.

This is a beautiful area and has a good feeling about it. It was nice to stroll and window shop and listen to the hum of chatter. The century old buildings are huge and very impressive. Nice restaurants and Gelaterias as well.
