The cable car Funivia Pass Pordoi is for most people a very convenient way to get within an hours walk of the highest peak in Sella group, the Piz Boe. I used it to descent to give my knees a rest. The 4 min glide down is almost too short to enjoy the panorama but is certainly more comfortable than a 40 min knee crunching walk.
The ticket for the descent can be purchased right in front of the access gate. It’s 9€ for a single descent but wearing one of the single use ‘proper’ facemasks is mandatory in the cable car which meant I had to buy one for 50 cents at the bar opposite. My Buff scarf was not allowed.
There is a huge parking allotment at the base station reserved for cable car passengers. It was completely empty when I arrived at 8:30am but rammed full to the brim on my return at 1pm. If you like me prefer hiking up and taking the cable car down feel free to park there. You don’t have to display a ticket or anything.

Had a two hour stop as part of a day trip to the Dolomites. Very easy to board the cable car which is large and standing only. Takes only a few minutes to reach the top and the incredible views. As we went in August we saw no snow but clear sunny skies meant we could even see the tiny alpine villages far into the distance, memorable.

Unless you are a mountaineer, take this cable car to get the best possible views of the Dolomite Mountains.
It's quick and a smooth ride to the top, where you can simply stroll around admiring the views, or eat and drink in the Rifugio Maria, part of the top station building complex.
If you are a bit more adventurous, there are several waymarked walks that lead off in various directions, but be sure you are well-equipped and know what you are doing!

We were staying in the Hotel Veronza were told there that we must not miss the chance to see Sass Pordoi so with friends that had popped over from Germany we drove about an hour there to see what it was all about. We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather, fine and clear. The road trip we were also told was one in 5 in the world that is a must do. How right they were for although distance is not far it is a windy road with lots of hairpins and alpine townships that you pass through. The scenery is fantastic with one better view after the other appearing around the next corner. Finally you make it to the foot of Pordoi where you gaze up in wonder at where the cable car disappears to the top of the mountain. We just do not have anything like this in Australia. We have the best beaches in the world coral reefs, fishing etc, things just as good but different. The view up the mountain on the cable car is truly spectacular with snow capped ranges appearing in the distance as you get close to the summit. Once at the top you have an almost 360 deg view. There are walks up the top to an even higher point and NO SKIING as no safety rails. There is a restaurant at the top and where is there not one in Europe in remote places like this. Words are hard to say what we were seeing there, it was just spectacular. This is a must place to go and may even be better in the winter.

The cable car is located just on the edge of town and is in easy walking distance of the old section of town. If staying at one of the local hotels you should be issued a guest pass which gives you free access to various activities etc around town including this ride. It takes about 4 min to rise to the top where the views are amazing however there is nothing else up there. It looks like there was a restaurant which has now closed and it looks in disrepair. A short walk along the road you come to a small village which is really pretty. In all it is well worth going up for half an hour or so to view the amazing views over the alps.

Took the tram up to top and then joined the few that went onwards. Most just look around the top but if you do you are missing a great experience of hiking to Boe Piz.
There are 2 routes one to Boe Piz and you can loop back via Boe Hutte/Refugio back to lift or many just go to Boe Hutte and then back track.
We did the 1st route the route. It's fine for kids (mine girls 11 and 14) if your not afraid to get dirty and heights.
The first part is to walk down towards first refugio. Then then you can look down on the valley and then see the route thru the glacier snow and see the ultimate goal at the top of Boe Piz way at the top. Seemed intimidating at first but gets and it is a bit as you will have to grab on to wires and chains to support yourself up the steeper part with very uneven rocks. It's fun but just hold on and you'll be fine. Some parts are a bit touchy but if my 11 yr old can do it most can. Switchbacks near the top and then you are finally there at 3152m at Boe Piz. Amazing view with 360 view. Can sit there at the restaurant for a beer and lunch. Saw some people back track the same way but go behind the hut toward Boe Refugio to complete the loop. This direction is easier than clockwise.
Ensure you pack a lunch to eat up there and enjoy the view. Going down towards the Refugio is a bit tough. Rolling small rocks makes hiking poles very useful. This area also leads to other trails but they looked like walking on a narrow ridge.
Passed by Refugio as storm coming in and Refugio is no exactly right on trails. This would add extra 15 min there and 15 min to get back on trail.
Walked thru more glaciers and slid down. Kids had fun sliding on their shoes and having snowball fights. Be warry of time as last tram going back to parking lot is at 4pm. We just made it but if we went to Refugio we prob would have missed it.
Entire hike took us about 5 hrs + with stops and was amazing to complement the prior day's hike from Passo Val Gardena to Puez Hutte down the Vulguna Valley (that was a 8 - 9 hr hike) Both these trails are good bang to see the area for day treks. On a tamer scale you can also try the short hike to Refugio Camico from Passo Sella. Lots of flowers. If you do all these 3 you would have some of the best day hikes in the region.
Very rewarding to do this hike and good accomplishment to make it up to Boe Piz peak (tallest in the region).
On your way up the tram look for insane rock climbers on the face of the mountain with 90 degree vertical - it's craziness !!! at 3000 metres.

The view from the cable car is beutiful, the view from the top is overwhelming (2900m)
For hiking you will need good walking boots, as some of the way is on snow.
Two recommended hikes (for all family)
1) From the top go down, there is a shelter after going down 500m turn right, it looks steep at the begining, If you are not an expet climber consult the locals before going down with small children to make sure you know what you're doing.
2) Walk to the top and come back, this is a 3-4 hours walk, not for small children, but worth any effort, really
Go only in good weather, preferably clear sky,

If you are in the area, this place is a must especially if you would not normally be able to walk/climb to the summit of almost 3000m. The price is great for the whole experience, though clear weather is a huge advantage. The cable car takes only four minutes to reach the top and once atop the views of the Dolomites are simply stunning. A restaurant is available on the summit, and walks for the more adventurous and properly prepared.

simple schedule (runs every 15 minutes) and inexpensive (5EU adults, kids free). great way to explore the mountain views. not much to see / do at the top, but worth the ride nonetheless.

if you are in the area and the weather is sunny and clear take the cable car right upto the top of the mountain. the air is clear and the views are fantastic from all directions. it might be a little cold up top so make sure you have enough clothing . you may see some people actually climbing up to the mountain , and others para gliding from the top .there is a restaurant on the top and a bar.it cost 16.- euros in the cable car which is only about 10 minutes ride .almost 3000 meters high.
