Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not as stunning as the nearby Villa of Poppea in Oplontis, but free (!) and still beautiful: above all, really impressive spaces, well-kept and beautiful as per standard what remains of the decorations (noteworthy in particular are some rooms where you will still feel surrounded by the colors of the time, and characters painted with finesse and perfectly preserved). Interesting contrast between this wonderful place and the panorama from the concrete casting (but with sea view) that can be seen from the terrace, as well as between the farm and the surrounding countryside and the picturesque entrance staircase to the Villa that seems to pop up randomly between a country house (more or less) modern and another. You may be the only visitor, so you can enjoy the beauty of this place yourself, but this is clearly an advantage. Cons: many rooms still not accessible (but what you see is well maintained), uncomfortable to reach by public transport given the infrequency of the bus from the Via Nocera della Vesuviana station (I did it on foot, the route is not at all long, but watch out for the fact that the Villa is NOT very well signposted).

A stupendous villa unknown even to the majority of the inhabitants of Castellammare and neighboring towns who really lose a lot by not visiting this free jewel where you can breathe the air of the 1st century complete with breath-taking spas and peristyles. The view of the sea crowns a spectacle of art and history that few in the world can boast. Highly recommended.

While touring Pompeii we learned about some other cities that were also destroyed and did a little research. We decided to check them out and heard about both Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna. Villa Arianna is currently closed but we took a walk up to Villa San Marco and we’re glad that we did. It was amazing AND free. The Villa is massive- 11,000 sq. meters! Beautiful frescos, a huge swimming pool and great views of the bBay for Naples! We were honestly blown away by the immensity of the Villa and could only imagine the life of the wealthy Roman that owned it. I would recommend getting of at the Nocera (sp?) stop rather than the Castlemmera de Stabia station. It’s much closer. If you loved Pompeii or Herculaneum you’ll love Villa San Marco!

An unexpected villa. Unfortunately the reporting is lacking. The site is splendid. The paintings, the swimming pool, the colonnade, the mosaics, are incredible. The site is completely free because it is considered part of the visit to Pompeii. It's really worth it!!

A great find.
I’ve been to Pompeii a few times and we had planned to visit Herculaneum today, but it’s closed on Wednesdays and as we we’re staying in Castellamare de Stabiae we thought we would visit. We’re so glad we did as it was the best of all of the Roman sites we visited. Far more intact than anything else we’ve seen and a real gem. Worth travelling to if you’re interested in Roman history.
Free entry a bonus but would have been glad to pay.
Thank you

Romanesque Villa well preserved. The mosaic floors are original, the frescoes few but interesting. In a diet Pompeian red is made from mercury sulfide which is unique in Roman villas. Beautiful garden inside the Villa where the trees are kept. Large parking free entrance and informed and available staff

This is a huge Villa that is very well preserved. It was buried at the same time as Pompeii. No crowds at all and relaxing.

If you are interested in the history of the area, this is a must-see. Having already seen Herculaneum and Pompeii in previous trips, the trip to this villa and the one down the road were the crowing glory. So well -preserved. Much more so than what we saw in Pompeii or Herculaneum. Not crowded at all. Just incredible.
BTW, it is also free!

We luckily visited both Villa’s; this one is the most impressive and also huge villa. Entrance is free, very few visitors. We got a ride from our b&b owner, what was handy, because it is outside the town and uphill. After the visit it was an easy 30 min walk to Villa Arianne ( with its beautiful view), and after that 20 min downhill to the trainstation. Very worth the visit. More impressive than Oplontis.

Villa San Marco is an ancient Roman luxury villa set in the middle of rural homes and a little farm.
We stopped for a visit en route from Naples to Positano - a pre-planned stop using the reliable car transport service, PositanoTonyTaxi. Our visit took between 30-45 minutes including having a picnic lunch on the grounds.
Our driver had some trouble finding the site because the sign for the villa was not easy to see. Using google maps or some other map app will get you there - take Strada Provinciale Varano Scavi di Stabia up the hill and turn right on Via Antiquarium di San Marco.
There is a large designated parking lot with free parking. There are also very clean bathrooms.
From the parking lot, there is a marked path. It is about a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to the entrance. You will pass through a little farm/garden and a few houses.
On the day we visited - a Saturday in June - there was someone at the entrance kiosk. He didn't speak any English but there is a sign-in book and free information booklets. There is NO admission charge.
Very few people visit the site so you will be able to enjoy exploring the vast villa on your own.
Some of the highlights of San Marco are: large kitchen, huge outdoor pool, atrium with lararium niche, some wall paintings (but not nearly as wonderful as Oplontis).
There are a few benches on the property where you can sit and enjoy a picnic. Bring your own food/water because there are no services nearby.
Villa San Marco does not take the place of a visit to Pompeii or Herculaneum but will add to the understanding of free-standing luxury villas.

Grazie.
