On the river Garrovio which descends with countless waterfalls from the mountain Bisbino the lasts years of last century Lady Pupa Frati started to clean it of thousands of garbages and began the creation of this beautiful garden

This 'garden' is the result of several years of restoration of a little river valley running down to Cernobbio. It is hard to believe that it was once used to dump rubbish! Volunteers have created a magical series of tiny terraces and wooden bridges with lush planting a of a variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. Lots of little side tracks lead to further surprises where someone talented in wood carving has created sculptures to make you smile. In fact it is a walk full of "oohs and aahs" .
We did it by starting at the top of the valley, emerging on to the road just up from the Villa D'Este. If you have any mobility issues be warned, there are rustic steps and the odd tree root to contend with. On a hot day, it is cool and lovely. It doesn't take long to complete if you don't stop but you cannot help but pause to admire at every turn! Gorgeous!

Found entirely by accident -- we just followed the signs in central Cernobbio to the "Giardino della Valle", a ten-minute walk -- this lovely little garden hugs the banks of the torrent that carries melted snow from the mountains above to the lake below. A total labour of love on the part of one local woman who, thirty-plus years ago, was disgusted by the fact that the area was being used as an illegal rubbish dump. She decided to make it a quiet, pretty place, with lots of trees and plants, as well as benches, where visitors can sit and ponder for a while, and thank her silently for her initiative. There's also a little free library: donate a book and take a book. Access from Via Plinio, or the first left off the Via Regina after Villa d'Este, if you are coming from Cernobbio.

September - end of the summer, not the best time of year. Well laid out gardens and plants are generally well signposted. Nice and cool under the trees, so you can't have everything! I suspect that the spring would be much better as with many gardens in this part of the world.

This is an informal garden in great contrast to the groomed grounds of the Villas surrounding Lake Como. It was mostly greenery - few flowers. but it was cool, quiet - a pleasant retreat.

I stayed in Cernobbio for 2 weeks and went for a walk up the mountain every morning. I finished a couple of my walks by strolling through this beautiful garden which I believe is cared for by volunteers. A must if you are visiting the magnificent Cernobbio!

Depending where you start, this can be quite difficult to find, or very easy! We must have been only a couple of metres from a brown sign when we asked a local, who then took us on a long detour.
We don't wish to disparage the excellent work of locals in converting a dump into a garden, but when we visited, it was OK, but nothing special.
We had thought of sitting in the shade and enjoying our lunch, but at the entrance, there was a prominent sign saying "NO PIC NIC".
The garden meanders for some distance, but we didn't see any interesting plants. Generally, it was somewhat untidy, as you'd expect of a garden maintained by volunteers. There were a few garden ornaments, which were amusing.
As other reviewers have commented, we were virtually alone the whole time we were there, which might seem attractive, except that the garden covers a big area with many hidden corners. We started to feel a little uncomfortable and vulnerable. Although there was no one to threaten us, it did make us think that if tourists do visit the garden, it would only take one or two villains to realise that this could be a very good place relieve them of their smart phones, cameras and a bit of money.
We're sorry to be party poopers, but we were quite glad to get out of there and return to busier parts of Cernobbio, nearer to the lake.

Tranquil garden , cleaned up from previous rubbish. Hard to find- go thru the gates ( top or bottom entry)- see photo of map. A small free library for you if you forget your book!

This garden was not easy to find, but it is a lovely walk down the hill to the lake once you have found it. Wear good shoes.
