- Richie Rich and Mrs HMiami, Florida19 contributionsNCL and CivitavechiaTrain from Airport one change €11 one way. It’s worth taking a photo of the route and train numbers when you book in the machine makes it easier than trying to read the little ticket. Walk into town 10 mins to sea front bars and restaurants. Lots of little streets and hidden gems reasonable prices We stayed at Bells House near the front it’s a small boutique style 7 bed place in a larger old style building with a small lift. Slightly off putting entrance tbh but safe friendly and very nice inside. Top of the stairs first floor. Stefano was friendly and helpful and made coffee and croissants in the seating area and opens up the balcony. There is a free shuttle to the cruise terminal but we walked 700 yards almost opposite slightly to the right of Bells House. Then picked up bus to the boat. Would stay againVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024
- GMH153Widley, United Kingdom772 contributionsInteresting war memorialWalking around Civitavecchia we followed the map given at the port. We walked past the Cathedral with a statue of John Paul 2. We went inside and it was very interesting with stone carved doors We walked around the castle Fort MichelAngelo and along the front where we came across the war memorial of a man and a woman embracing. Having visited a free photo exhibition of Civitavecchia in the war As a port it had been heavily bombed with planes from Sicily. Much must have been rebuilt There are some very nice restaurants for lunch in the back streets of CivitavecchiaVisited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 May 2024
- Phil H1 contributionLovely in a tatty sort of waySuch a happy two nights here at Porto di Roma Hotel. The area Is wonderful in a tatty sort of way being situated in the old town. The welcome was warm. We were made at home immediately by Kiko who invited us to share a complementary drink while he booked us in etc. The hotel is scrupulously clean, modern and well appointed. Everything you need for a short stay before shipping out on a cruise. We especially enjoyed the local cafes , market and street art. We didn’t bother with the more modern touristy areas other than to see the statue of Peace and Michel Angelo’s fort. This little city has much to offer . Clearly not the same as a large city which will probably disappoint some but if you want to you can find delightful magic spaces here.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 May 2024
- Andrea CSan Antonio, Texas4 contributionsI had a great time there. I will go back again and do it all over.Definitely a nice little port. Easy to get to. The port, but I would not be able to walk there with my luggage to go on the cruise. It was six blocks from our hotel which at first we didn’t know and took a taxi that cost me $20 one way and $30 the other way. That was a real rip off when I could’ve walked. It was about six blocks not that far no need for a taxi. The hotel offered a shuttle for 12 euros.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 May 2024

It's a big cruise ship port that can accommodate a number of ships, so it was busy. It's also an industrial port, so not too pretty. There was a 6 Euro shuttle bus that took us to the train station so we could travel to Rome on the train on our own.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- hannah w1 contributionBeware of taxi drivers at the port!!Italy was nice. We travelled via cruise ship (Royal carribean, anthem of the seas) . Be warned though, taxi drivers at the port will try to fleece you. Charged us £125 for a 10 minuate drive for 5 people. We had initially thought this was overpriced but didn't question it because we were new to the country and didn't know if this was expensive or not. We soon realised when we arranged an uber back to the ship which only cost 32 euro!! Dont let them rob you they way they robbed us the first time. I have attached a picture of their business card for referenceVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 August 2024
- Barbara A102 contributionsTerrific Shuttle Bus Experience to the civitavecchia portI had read reviews and was really nervous about being taken advantage of at the port. Our port experience was good though - the shuttle bus was only 6 euros and took us right to our Royal Caribbean Cruise ship. It was easy getting our luggage aboard the shuttle bus. No one took advantage of us. Take the shuttle!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 August 2024
- Richard HSouthampton, United Kingdom24 contributionsGreat value transit from port to central Rome.We travelled from the cruise port to Civitavecchia station using the shuttle bus and then on to central Rome using the train. We bought our train tickets a few days in advance via Trainline and they included the shuttle bus; which is otherwise charged at €6 per person. Considering our whole journey was €60, the included shuttle bus is great value. Just show your tickets on your phone to the driver. (IMPORTANT: You do not need to check in/validate the tickets for the shuttle bus journey) On arrival at the station, we realised we could catch an earlier train than we’d originally booked, so via the Trainline app, we used the Manage my Booking facility to change the time at no cost. Only once you are happy with the train time you have booked (or swapped to) should you validate your ticket because once you have done this, you cannot make changes. When you validate the tickets, each ticket will be shown with a “Validate Ticket” message at the bottom. You can’t click on this. Instead, you need to scroll right down to the bottom of the last ticket where you will find the “Validate” button. If you’ve booked multiple tickets, you’ll be able to validate them all in one go. Once validated, you can share the tickets with your fellow passengers by selecting the share icon on each ticket. Make sure you share the named ticket with the right person. Our train was surprisingly quiet given there were 5 cruise ships in that day and we left bang on time in air conditioned comfort. A highly recommended way to get into Rome and great value compared to the ludicrous prices charged by the cruise company.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 August 2024
- N BVancouver, Canada88 contributionsFrom Rome Cruise Terminal to Rome Train station - don’t get fleeced by private taxi operators. If you land on Rome cruise terminal don’t be misled by private taxi drivers that claim your train ticket to Rome is 40. It’s just 4-12 euros depending on train. They want to charge you 150-250 per ride. We took the shuttle bus, paid 6 euros for a 7 minutes ride to Civitavecchia train station and took a train to Rome Termini Station. Under 10 euros pp. all in, including shuttle. If you don’t reserve online that’s ok too. Lots of trains and tickets available at the station as well. If you are going to Sorrento or Naples. Roma Termini station has links to other trains as well. The Civitavecchia station has an air conditioned cafe, where we waited for train no seating is there and it has a toilet too that you don’t pay for unlike other facilities. All in all a great experience. Don’t get fleeced and stay informed.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2024

This cruise port is NOT easy to navigate (very confusing) unless you are fortunate enough to have transportation directly to your ship, such as by a dedicated bus. Please note that most vehicles are not allowed inside the port’s street system – it is primarily serviced by dedicated Port Authority buses. Since we spent the previous night in Civitavecchia, like many other people, we planned to walk to the port from our hotel and use the Port’s free bus transportation.
First you must discover where your ship is docked, whether in the old or new dock area. This information is generally not available until your date of embarkation. NOTE that the paths to the new and old dock areas are completely different, requiring different buses and therefore you must locate the correct bus stop. Generally, you can approach the guard at the entry to the Port (near the Fort) who can tell you where your ship is docked and direct you to the correct bus stop. Hopefully he/she can and will speak English – we successfully communicated with the guard. Along the way we picked up and led about a dozen co-passengers that were more confused than we were.
We walked to the bus stop for the new dock area, which is approximately 100 meters from the guard shack. When the bus arrived, we were shocked that there was no undercarriage storage and we had to lift and hold on to our luggage in the bus’s seating area. We then thought all was well until the bus pulled into a large parking lot, only to turn around and stop on the street. The bus driver did not speak English, but he clearly requested that we exit the bus. He ambiguously began pointing down the street saying nothing but “bus”. Everyone on the bus was utterly confused, since there was no further direction provided. Finally, my husband and another passenger walked down the street and found a boarding area, which happened to be somewhat adjacent to the parking lot the bus driver had just pulled in and out of. Only God knows why the driver didn’t simply have us exit in the parking lot and point towards the next bus’s boarding area (yes, a second bus was needed). We then waited and boarded the second bus that took us to the embarkation area for our ship. Fortunately, this second bus did have undercarriage luggage storage.
The embarkation process for our cruise went smoothly after the bus nightmare. The Civitavecchia area just outside the port is safe, but not much to see. There are restaurants and some shops nearby that have touristy souvenirs. The impressive Michelangelo Fort could only be viewed from the outside.

We were on an AIDA cruise from Civitavecchia port in February 2023. We took the train from the FCO airport to Civitavecchia (about 1.5 hours) and walked via Calata della Rocca and through the Arch of Pope Clementius to road SS1 to the port terminal at 1 Via Prato del Turco. From there a free shuttle bus took us to the cruise ship at Pier 25, where check-in was completed in only 10 minutes! In this part of the port it is quite confusing and not very well signed to walk so I would recommend the shuttle bus.
On our return to Civitavecchia a week later we docked at the modern Pier 12 from which it is quite straightforward to walk to the train station without taking any shuttle bus.

This must be one of the most beautiful ports in the world. It’s quiet and charming and there’s even Roman ruins!. It is an attractive 30 minute paved coast walk to the port entrance from the train station if you are getting on a cruise. We spent a nice evening here, there’s a supermarket to stick up on along the broad walk stroll.
The trains from the train station back into Rome are regular.

We cruised on Royal Caribbean from Civitavechia Port September 2022. During the day there are a few cafes and bars to get a bite to eat and in the evenings there are many sidewalk cafes and restaurants to choose from for dinner. In warm weather it is a very pleasant stroll around the city, which is not very big. We ate at a quaint pizza restaurant and it was delicious! From our hotel we walked right up the street with our luggage to get the shuttle bus $2 that dropped us off at the ship. The only drawback to this port is that it is one hour from the Rome airport and you must arrange transportation to and from arriving the day before the cruise but there is a bus from the ship that you can pay $50pp. to return to Rome. Private transport is double that price.

Excellent service. We reserved a van from the Civitavecchia Port website directly on Aug. 19 from our hotel in Rome to the Civitavecchia Port. Their driver arrived 15 minutes earlier and waited for us. He is very nice and helped with our luggage. He drove us to the cruise building directly, instead of other taxis can only leave you outside the port and you have to take a shuttle bus to get to the cruise terminal. Their price is very reasonable too. I would highly recommend them.

BOOK A RIDE IN ADVANCE. Taking the bus is also an easy option. I was not able to get an Uber. The taxis operating at the Cruise Port in Civitzvecchia are scamming and intimidating tourists. They only accept cash. They make you wait until there are six people going to the same place you’re going and charge each one 100 Euro. My driver started the meter once he got on the highway and it was only up to 180 Euro when he dropped me off. Our group had to pay 600 Euro. When I got out, he told me it was 150 Euro. I reminded him that he had originally said 100 Euro. He said, “fine, 120 Euro then.”
Person after person were standing there in disbelief at the prices they were trying to charge and that they would only accept cash.

Book your transfer in advance with the cruise or private. This is my advice.
After we disembarked from the cruise, we planned to take a taxi to the airport directly. When we walked out the parking area, there're many large buses waiting to pick up passengers, NO yellow cabs at all!! All we can see are 6 minivans with Taxi sign on top.
We had no choice. They asked for 75 Euro p/p. We finally carpool with other passengers total of 8 and bargain to 50 Euro p/p. Took 1 hour to the airport. It seems like they want at lease 400 Euro per van.
Plan advance if you disembark from this port, they want to rip you off. terrible experience.

The cruise port in Civitavecchia was fine. Clear signage helped direct passengers getting off of cruise ships.
Beware of the taxi drivers. They do not go by the listed price of about 125/155 euros to get to Rome. About 1 hour 20 min drive. Once you depart from the terminal, you will see a bunch of white taxis parked in spots across from the doors. One point person will appproach and ask if you need a taxi. They quoted 4 of us 480 euros. 2 adults and 2 young kids.
Initially it was more but they offered us a “special deal.” Cash only. We told the taxi ringleader the pricing didn’t sound right and checked on Uber (260 euro in a van).
We took the Uber from the port to our hotel in Rome. The Uber driver did ask if we would pay cash instead of through the app. We weren’t able to do that but we understand fees can be high. The driver was find when we said no.
While waiting for our Uber, we watched the same taxi person approaching the other passengers who needed a taxi. A family of 5 was asked to pay cash 660 euro to go to Rome. Two female friends said they didn’t have cash but the taxi driver said they can stop at an ATM. Prices would slightly change every time they approach a group or couple.
Another couple opted for Uber when they were quoted an outrageous amount. They also looked up the taxi fare online but the taxis wouldn’t honor it.
While in Rome taking taxis on other outings, price for the port to Rome was listed as 125 euro (including luggage and tolls). I believe there was a few euro charge for each additional person. This is not listed as per person.
Beware if you need transport. Book in advance, especially if you have a larger group.

Is it possible to book a driver to meet us from our cruise, explore the port area and then drop us at the airport?
Written 14 May 2023
Upon disembarkation -From the cruise ship there is a free shuttle to the bus station. From the bus station there is a bus to the Rome airport.
However it does NOT work in reverse. From the Rome airport you need to take the train (1 hour trip) to Chivitavchia or private transport or taxi. We booked a private car company who picked us up at the airport with our name on a sign and drove us directly to our hotel by the port.
