Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Initially commissioned by Pope Julius II to defend the port of Rome. The upper part of the tower was designed by Michelangelo. Apparently it is one of the most important military architectonical structures of the linked coastline. Very impressive structure indeed.

We stopped by on a Sunday mid-day and the fortress wasn’t open, so we walked around the whole thing. Very impressive structure and excellent for a way to stretch your legs if you get off a cruise ship or staying in Civitavecchia. We arrived early for our cruise and decided not to go to Rome for a second day and just walk around Civitavecchia.

The fort is connected to the park that runs along the water. Excellent way to get some exercise. There are excellent points around the fort to take pictures. Hopefully it’ll be open the next time we visit. It’s worth a visit if you’re hanging around the port.

The fort was not open to view inside when I was there. Still it was such a gorgeous day to enjoy walking around the fort. There are a couple of waterfalls which is so nice to listen to.
From the fort, I walked along the promenade.
I decided to walk back to my cruise ship from the fort (walking slow) it took me 20 minutes.

We stayed at Civitaveccia for the day while on a cruise, rather than battling a hot and crowded Rome. The fortress is between the port area and the town, and is the most impressive landmark in Civitaveccia. There are no barriers to getting to walk around the outside, but as it's a working base for the (I think) the customs police, you won't get access. We had a good half day in the town -walked the beach, visited the museum (worthwhile, part labelled in English), walked the town and market.

Great introduction to Italian architecture. We could not go in the fort, but the grounds, the wall, etc. were gorgeous. We checked our bags at the cruise ship early in the morning.(which by the way made it so much easier when boarding the ship later that day) and spent the day in Civitavechia prior to boarding.

I was stunned when I got down from the ship and see that huge structure. I didn't remember that Michelangelo fortress was in Civi; Had a really good time drinking coffee with friends; Relaxing place to be. Wish we could get inside of it..

it's the perfect location for cutural exhibits thanks to the Port Authority Cultural Centre that hosts art galleries and other expositions like the intimate and fascinating Ingrid Bergman's photo expo. And the entrance is free.

. . . . . you'll be disappointed that you can't get inside. Reason? It is still in use, it appears, as soldiers with weapons were on patrol nearby. It's a very pleasant experience to walk round and admire the outside though.

We have visited Civitavecchia before and the fortress was closed so we looked to see if there were opening times/days before our next visit. We found conflicting views and wondered if it would ever be open. However we were delighted to find it open with free entry! It is an imposing fortress that you can walk around the courtyard and visit the little chapel.

In fact, one couldn't walk around this place because of high port security at the entrance. One needed to be boarding/departing a ship to get through.
