Absolutely the most thrilling thing I did on our trip to the Dolomittes. Took the first cable car to the first plateau. Had a walk around the Observatory, enjoyed the views and bathed in the sun. Went to take the second cable car, and was told there had been a serious accident higher up. Turned out a basejumper had plunged to his death so we had a two and a half hour wait while they recovered the body. All cable cars were haulted. So sad.Enjoyed a meat platter and a beer at the Masi winebar while waiting.Took the second cable car up. Walked around, took in the views. There was also a restaurant serving pizza. Then we took the last cable car to Cima Tofana. I have a fear of heights so this was slightly terrifying for me. The car goes straight up to the mountain top and you disembark on to a large terrace. Magnificent views all around🤩 But I really felt as though I had the world at my feet. Was very glad to get back down on to firm ground. Highly recommend!!! A once in a lifetime experience for me!!

Probably not so good for a complete beginner but a moderately competent skier can find reliable powder and ice. A mix of lifts, one rather archaic the new one a chair with a middle station may come as a surprise to some. The café/ restaurant is very pleasant and has super views.

We did a day trip to Cortina d’Ampezzo from Venice by taking FlixBus with advanced purchase of this tickets using FlixBus APP. Three-hour bus journey departed from Venezia Tronchetto to Cortina Autostazions cost €21.98 round trip per person. It was end of winter beginning of spring, hence an off peak season. It was quiet when we reached Cortina d’Ampezzo. After lunchtime, we proceeded to Faloria Cable Car Station (within 10 mins walk in Cortina d’Ampezzo town) to go to the ski resort at €19 round trip (which maybe off peak season price) per person. Cable car took 15-20 mins to reach the ski resort. The mountain ranges of Dolomites view at the ski resort had blown us away. It was spectacular view on a sunny day. There is a viewing platform, and a restaurant to relax and chill with the lovely views. Small ski resort but the views were good enough to impress us! There were still many skiers having fun at the skiing slopes. Even a non skiers like us were having fun with great time too!

I was at Cortina D'Ampezzo in this Dec 2018 and was happily skiing at the beginners slopes. I was at Chalet Tofana. On the first day, my wife and myself just went for a joy ride on the ski lifts without skis and enjoyed the views and came back down on the lift. On the 3rd day I was happily skiing and decided to take a look at the higher slopes to see if I was ready for them.
I entered the chair lift and while reaching the top I saw the slopes were quite treacherous and decided these slopes were not for me.
So I decided to return back on the chair lift.
To my utter surprise, the operator stopped the lift and rudely asked me to get off.
I first tried to question him why he was asking to get off when I had a valid pass and after all it was my decision whether I wanted to ski or not.
But he knew no English and just shrugged his shoulders indicating that he would not restart the lift if I didn't get off.
I then pleaded to him that I could not ski and needed to get back down safely. How else would I be able to get down if I'm not on the lift. Again he just shrugged his shoulders indicating he didn't care and that as far as he was concerned I had to just get the hell off.
Being left with no option, I removed my skis and tried waking down. With the steep gradient of the slippery slopes I fell a couple of times while walking as ski shoes offer handly any grip whatsoever. I then thought it would be best to again wear the skis and slowly snow plough all the way down.
I could just manage a few feet and I slipped and fell down very badly. The fall was so bad that I've torn 3 of my 4 ligaments of my left knee. It is such a painful and slow journey to recover..
I just wish I met that unconcerned and rude lift operator later. I would have given him such a bashing that for sure it would be him in the hospital instead of me..
What I do not understand is :
1) Why the hell was I not allowed to use the lift on the way down?
2) If there was such a strict rule, how come on the first day my wife and I went up and down without any problems?
3) There should have been very clear warning signs that lifts can't be used on the way down.
These stupid people want their patrons to have fun or land in hospitals with broken limbs?? How is a foreigner supposed to know if there are such rules and if they are not clearly spelt out? I've visited Zermatt and other ski destinations and this is not the standard rule anywhere else. Why here?? And why the hell is it not clearly spelt out?
4) I wish somebody can clear this point for me and if the ski lift operator was wrong in not allowing me to use the lift for coming down despite my pleading him and inability to undertake such steep slopes, I have all the details of which lift I used, time and date and if that operator could be identified, I think he should be immediately sacked with a serious apology letter to me. If I could have his details maybe I could ensure he's sent to the hospital with some broken limbs thanks to me.
You guys in charge of the lifts at Cortina D'Ampezzo very seriously need to consider this point. Accidents could be fatal.. Are you playing with peoples lives?? Who gives you the right to do this? Who's going to pay for my 3 months of pain and discomfort to myself and my family? I'm writing this while wearing leg braces as I cannot move my leg at all.
You should make it very clear that the lifts can't be used for the way down if there exists such a stupid rule.

La Tofana (Freccia nel Cielo) cable car is in Cortina D'Ampezzo. It has it's own parking area. The ride is in three stages and if you go to the top it costs 30 euro per person. At the ticket counter ask if the weather on top is clear, they have a webcam and can tell you what the conditions are. In summer it is open from 9am to 5pm.
At the Col Druscie stop there is a restaurant and also an astro observatory. Cima Tofana at the very top lies at 3244 meters and is the third highest peak of the Dolomites. Here there is a large panoramic terrace with 360 views of the surrounding mountains. Many people were lying on loungers sun bathing and relaxing. The views are truly exceptional.
You can also go further up via a metal staircase, and for the more adventurous there are many via ferratas, hikes and climbing. A short walk takes you the metal cross erected at this site. we were her in july and i suggest you take a jacket with you even though some people were bare chested on the sun deck.
At the top you will also find refreshments in the form of toasted sandwiches, coffee, beer, gluvine etc.
This cable car ride to the top is worth it.

Probably my favorite place with astounding views of the Italian Alps, west of Cortina d'Ampezzo. The last cable car stop at 3225 meters, is often closed during the winter season.

We took two trams to the top of this ski area. The conditions were quite hard-packed but groomed. The views from the top were awesome!
