Thank you so much to all the instructors we had this week. We had a family lesson with the lovely Karin Costamoling during our first day just to get used to skis again. My wife had private lessons with Karin every day for the rest of the week and her skiing had really progressed. Our daughter Zoe was taught again this year by Jana which she was absolutely delighted about. Our little boy was taught by Simone who was fantastic with the children. I was lucky enough to have some private lessons with Marc Tatz who was great company and managed to get me skiing far better than I was at the beginning of the week. The highlight was when he told me I did at least one good turn on the Gran Risa. The best skiing compliment I’ve ever had. All highly professional and lovely people. We are always made to feel so welcome which is one of the reasons we return to Corvara year after year. Thank you Scuola Sci Corvara. We’ve already booked our hotel so look forward to seeing you again next year.

Here is what to expect:

No real information on what to expect on day one. Don’t take a bag for the little ones like we did. Just find out where to leave them. And leave them!

Expect to get the most lovely instructors, fully English speaking for both of our girls’ classes (age 5 and just 9).

Expect first timers to make incredible progress. By day three everyone was up in the mountains. By day four they were doing slalom races. That’s the whole class. The 9 year old was doing ski fun slopes deep in the dolomites.

We still talk about how lovely the instructors were to our girls. Our youngest slightly hurt her hand one day and they were so careful and protective of her.

Take 13 euros on days four and five as they will have lunch (these are full days - the others are 10::00 - 12:45).

Kids will need a local ski pass for the lifts.

An incredible positive experience for two young first timers who definitely want to go back.

A big thanks.

On a recent ski holiday we treated ourselves to a 2hr private lesson to improve our confidence.
I proved very worthwhile and our instructor Barbara was excellent and fully understood our needs and offered excellent tuition.
Thank you.

This is the email I have just sent the ski school:

Hello Lisa,

I just wanted to say thank you for giving our family such an amazing experience and making our skiing holiday so special.

My wife Helen is a very nervous skier lacking in confidence but Karen (who owns the restaurant at Col Alt with her husband) was brilliant with her. She was extremely patient and Helen feels like she has really progressed.

We could not believe how far our children could progress after a week of skiing. At the beginning our four year old, William would not put on ski boots or his helmet and would throw his mittens in the snow. After a few days he fell in love with it and was able to ski down making turns.

Our daughter Zoe had such an amazing time with Noemi and has been in tears several times saying how much she misses her. She has gone from never skiing to flying down blues and reds covering 25km in a day. She has absolutely fallen in love with skiing.

I had two, two hour lessons with another Karen who has made a massive difference to my skiing also. The day after her tuition I completed the Sella Ronda circuit in 3.5 hours without falling over once. I could not have done that without her help.

So thank you. Your ski school has been able to provide instructors for all of us and got the best out of each of us. As soon as we know our children’s half term dates we will be booking lessons with you next year.

Kind regards,

Iain.

Our instructor Luca B was excellent for our ski group. We where of similar ability and he was able to build our confidence, keep us all safe and help to build on our individual strengths. The school is very well run and organised. The ski area is fabulous and the views outstanding ,being able to ski further and see the area and views was amazing. I was able to ski further than ever before and this was mainly due to the excellent instructor. Well done. We will be back !

If you are a nervous skier like myself then I highly recommend some private lessons with Ski School Corvara Ladinia if you are planning to ski at Corvara for the first time. I came skiing with my husband and daughter and two other friends who are all better skiers and so the first day was a little traumatic for me as I found the runs off the Col Alt Gondolier a bit challenging to start with. On the second day I had a two hour lesson with Chantelle who was wonderfully understanding and gave me some good tips to help me ski with better control.
I booked another lesson for the third day but unfortunately was unwell. My husband and daughter took the lesson and enjoyed a great two hours with Luca who took them to different parts of the area and gave some useful tips to improve their skiing. I was more confident to ski with my family on the Wednesday and Thursday which made the holiday a lot more pleasant for all of us. I booked a four hour lesson on the Friday whilst the rest of our group skied the Sella Ronda for the day. Wilma was just such a lovely lady to spend this time with. We skied to Santa Croce and back which entailed some red runs that were quite challenging for me. With Wilma's guidance I gained considerable confidence and on our last day of skiing was able to ski a number of red runs with my family without being freaked out and without any falls!!
Organising these lessons entailed quite a bit of communication with the ski school booking staff who were very helpful and pleasant.
On our first day on the slopes my daughter lost her mobile phone most probably when helping me up from a fall. As you could imagine this was a huge drama because of the expense of replacing the phone and because she would be without a phone for the duration of our holiday. The phone was returned to our hotel at the end of the day by a ski instructor who had found it. We were never able to ascertain the name of the instructor but are extremely grateful to him for this act of kindness.

Imagine my amazement when my 5 year old (only her third week on skis) skied up with us to a local on-mountain restaurant, clicked out of her skis like a professional (that thing where you push one binding down with one ski and then the other with your free ski boot, that I still can’t do without risking falling over) and marched over to a restaurant table in her ski boots saying “this is where our instructor Roberto took us for hot chocolate”.

My 7 and 5 year old had a heap of fun in their week long group lesson (3 mornings, then two full days). Just as importantly, they learnt not just to ski well, but clearly also were taught all the little things that make new skiers more comfortable on the snow: how to click in and out of skis, how to stand still in skis on a steeper incline, how to walk sideways up a hill in your skis, etc etc.

Don’t be put off by what seems like chaos on your first morning, when the ski school assesses the new students for allocation to the right class. Once that 20 minutes was done, our children had a superb, friendly instructor that not only taught them the necessary skills but also had a great sense of when they were getting tired, cold, afraid and needing encouragement or hand-holding etc.

If your child doesn’t speak German or Italian, it’s worth booking a place in advance and specifying that you need an English-speaking instructor.

A quick word on the gear shop, as there are some negative reviews previously: we rented all our kids’ gear and our skis through this shop and had a very positive experience: good equipment in good condition, fast service, and when my son broke an (previously slightly bent) ski pole during a ski lesson they just gave him new poles, no questions asked and no extra charge. The lockers make life a lot easier if your hotel isn’t right next to the Boe and Borest lifts.
