Lazise is a charming village which is kept very clean and oozes money. This little church almost feels out of place with the beautifully maintained houses and promenade but that's what's so charming about it. It holds it's authenticity and hasn't been taking in by over restoration. The exterior is rustic and although I would have loved to have gone in, we were desperate for some refreshments in the Italian summer heat.

The small San Nicolo church is located in the cosy port of Lazise and dates back to the 12th century. It's named after San Nicolo, the pattern of the sea. Before the middle of the past century, the church was used as a warehouse, as barracks and even as a theatre. Nowadays, it's a church again, also a place to remember the victims of war. The church has several beaufiful midieval frescos, but is currently under restauration.

Near the small harbor in Lazise is the stone church of St. Nicholas (San Nicolo). St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors so it is fitting that the church is situated at the harbor. Inside the cool interior there are several frescoes although most are damaged. These 13th and 14th century frescoes include a fairly intact Madonna and Child. Worth a look if you are in Lazise. Free.
