When we visited the place was closed with gates. Impossible to see anything of the building except the upper part of the front facade. See picture. Not worth a visit if under construction.

There is a place in l'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. Where you can find the great beauty and finally peace. This place in my opinion is very close to Him. This place is Santa Maria di Collemaggio.

Very beautiful from the outside, was hoping to see the inside but it was closed. I hope inside visits are possible before 17/12/2017 (the expected finishing date, also see the photo of the plaque, bottom line).

This 13th century Basilica is a landmark of unique value. Its facade is an outstanding example of romanesque architecture. It contains the tomb of Celestine 5th the first and, up to recently, only pope to resign his mandate at the turn of the 13th century....More

While reconstruction is still going on inside, the distinctive facade remains intact and somehow lovelier than ever. The long extensive front lawn than used to be full of locals and playing children lies unused and forlorn looking but resolutely green as it awaits happier days....More

Before the cathedral here's some local magic to experience. I wish i could read L'Aquila blindfolded so as not to see the elevated motorways that surround and almost suffocate the city. Remember the number '99.' No, not the agent Maxwell Smart kind, but for everything...More
