Turning the corner to view the Basilica for the first time, all of our group just stopped and said “wow” - exactly as the builders had designed it for! This is a stunning example of Baroque architecture both inside and out. Take the time to have a good look round the side chapels and paintings. I was surprised that there were no ornate windows here, though.

Seems that the only way to see inside is to purchase a multi-church ticket (which can be done online or in the tourist shop opposite). Expect to see carvings galore and paintings over the wooden panelled ceiling of the basilica. Actually, the outside facade is even more impressive than the inside.

Enjoyed guided tour of this Basilica and its history and importance to the city of Lecce. It is a main attraction especially if your appreciative of baroque art. The intricate carvings on the building's facade is beautiful and stories behind the reason for the carvings. Lively plaza in front of church with many groups going through. The interior is impressive with more carvings and stories!

The basilica is made of shining Leccean limestone and very richly ornamented in the baroque style. The interior likewise abunds in ornaments and colonnades of white pillars. The ceiling is of particular interest; it is wooden, the s.c. cassette ceiling with a huge painting of the holy trinity in the middle.

While the locals are very proud of their basilica, it is a demonstration of the temptation which architects face of building monuments to themselves (using other people's money). The facade of this building took over 100 years, and 3 architects, to complete. One gets the sense that each successive architect was struggling to make their mark, to outdo their predecessor. The consequence is a facade full of intricate detail and hidden meanings which collectively are so "over the top" the whole impression is of an unintegrated mish-mash that borders on the psychotic. I didn't dare go inside!

The Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce is located in the central area and represents the maximum of the local baroque style. The large external façade is rich in details, while the Latin cross interior highlights the beauty of the ceiling and chapels, crafted with valuable works. The vaults of the naves are also interesting. To visit.

Of the great churches, the greatest. This is where the Leccesian Baroque comes into its own best. Beautiful facade. Inside three-nave basilica, grandiose wooden ceiling.
Side altars and high altar with the famous Lecceser baroque twists all in stucco / marble. The most beautiful is the west facade with the rosette and the unique rosette frieze; rarely seen anything so sublime.

Considered a hinge between the Renaissance and Baroque, the spectacular church of Santa Croce, from the interior with three naves, is the most representative expression of Lecce Baroque, especially for the decorative richness of the facade. Inside, the nave is as wide as the aisles plus the chapels. It was built between 1549 and 1646 by the three architects Riccardi, Penna and Zimbalo. Recommended the visit.

We have seen many churches, basilicas and cathedrals, but this facade is guaranteed to be top 3.
Six columns support the main body and 4 Corinthian columns support the entrance portal. An impressive rose window and many animals and vegetables lavishly decorate the facade here and there.

The interior is renaissance oriented and is rather sober compared to the exterior.

Construction began in 1549 and completion took until 1695.

A highlight of our journey through Apulia!
