Remains of the impressive Roman amphitheatre occupy much part of Piazza Sant'Oronzo. Dating back to 2nd century this place had seats for 25 thousand people but nowadays you may see roughly half of the original amphitheatre. Unfortunately, the site was closed in October but we were OK with taking a look from above as the ruins are clearly visible from... More

Another amphitheatre, but a good square to do people watching. A good reference point for wandering the side streets. Saturday nights are disrupted by kids and the McDonalds..

Lovingly excavated to about one third its original capacity of 25000 people, this Ampitheater is located at the terminus of the Via Appia in Rome. As such, it was emblematic of the extension of Roman culture to the provinces. Now it is fittingly used for cultural events. Perfect blend of ancient and present.

When we were there there was an evenings concert in the theatre, which was free of charge, it was interesting to watch the musical instruments being lowered by crane onto the stage.

We were lucky enough to catch the end of a free live concert in the Roman Amphitheater by the Regional orchestra. Whilst I am not heavily into classical music this was a magical experience and my only regret was not getting there earlier I am getting fed up with giving 5 stars to Southern Italy sights ........ but they are... Great amphitheater. Unfortunately, as other places of this type, did not survive in top condition for our time. But you must see it, when you are in Lecce.

Located in the heart of Lecce, the Italians don't just restore their historic finding but use them too. These are used for concerts, recitals and performances in the evenings. Good to see that it's not just something to look at from a distance.

Nice amphitheatre in the old centre of Lecce. Especialiy because it looks like it belongs in the current city center. The theatre is also used for performances which looks very good.

The ampitheatre is surrounded by modern buildings and set below street level. It can only be viewed from the street and being so enclosed loses some of the appeal of the site.
