Build in 1703 and the oldest of Lecce’s three gates to the historic centre. Porta Rudiae takes its name from the ancient city of Rudiae, birthplace of Sant’Oronzo - the patron Saint of Lecce who adorns the gate as well as the Roman column in the old town’s main piazza - which the gate faced. It’s the entrance we find ourself using the most often because we always find a parking space on this side of the old town without too much trouble!

It is one of the doors of the old town. Well preserved and beautifull example of the arquiteture. Also important for the historical meaning.

What a nice surprise, looking for the city centre, to see such imposing "door", and everything laying on the other side. A good start for a wonderful visit.

One of 3 entry gates into the Centro Storico area of Lecce, it is the oldest and faced the ancient destroyed city of Rudiae. Atop the gate is a statue of the patron saint of Lecce, Sant’Oronzo, flanked by statues of Irene and Dominic. The gate is ornate on the side facing out of town, but rather plain stone blocks from the interior.

Porta Rudiae is a well preserved gateway leading into the centro storico. It is the oldest gateway of Lecce. The original gate collapsed and was rebuilt by Prospero Lubelli in 1703. It consists of a single arch with double columns. A frieze contains the busts of the mythical founders of the city Euippa, Malennio, Dauno and Idomeneo. On the top are the statues of St Irene, St Orontius and Saint Dominic.
