Wow! What an awesome experience! We were so lucky to have a beautiful fine night. We stayed at Kuaotunu campground a short distance away and was easy to get to. You ring up on the day to check the weather conditions. Alastair is a fountain of knowledge who could share for hours. Our kids really enjoyed looking through the telescope and learning about the night sky. He makes things like light speed understandable and puts distances into practical terms. Also as a geologist, he has lots of interesting rocks to see. An absolute must for any space lovers!

It is advisable to leave a few more days before you go, because the weather may not be available the night you want to go or the next night.

Many thanks for your review. Yes, it's good to have a couple of days free if you can as you never know what the weather will do and the tours are weather dependent.

Alistair's passion is contagious! He is a wealth of knowledge and funny too! Now my family loves stars!! The tour was very educational! We enjoyed learning about stars and looking at them! The place is about 15 mins drive from Whitianga town, but the road is dark (which allows for better stargazing) and winding, so allow a bit more time if you aren't used to the road. We all had great sleep after the stargazing tour! I think it's because of eliminating light before bedtime!

Hi Amy, Many thanks for your kind review. Glad you enjoyed the night...you certainly chose a good clear one and it's the dark skies (and road!) that make the views of the night sky so wonderful here.

Such a great experience! We were only 6 people so it was super intimate. The host was extremely passionate and knowledgeable and told us everything and more about space, stars, the solar system, etc and happily answered all questions. We got to look in the telescope several times. When it got dark, the sky out there is just amazing. I really recommend this, it was one of our highlights on our New Zealand trip, very memorable. Bring insect repellant and warm clothing if you go!

Hi Christina, Many thanks for the kind review. I'm glad you and Christoffer enjoyed the tour as part of a small group. We do try to keep the tours small and intimate if possible so everyone has a good chance to see several things through the telescope. You chose a good clear night to come along as our dark skies do have lots of interesting things to see with the telescope....and even the naked eye when you are away from the light pollution of big cities! It's also nice to be able to see some southern sky celestial treats that are not visible in the northern hemisphere.

It was my birthday, and my partner had wanted to bless me by booking a weekend in the Coromandel. On Saturday night, we managed to book in this tour, as I wanted to do some astrophotography. I have to say, it could not have been more perfect! The hosts were extremely accommodating and friendly, and the tour - wow! We learned about using the stars to navigate, constellations, too much to name, but every part was exciting and new. There is just a difference when you’re being taken through something by someone who is passionate about the subject - the excitement and interest was contagious! Walking through the beautiful home as we got a picture in our mind about the vastness of our little solar system both blew my mind and truely made me want to book a weekend at their B&B - a stunning location, beautiful night skies, and a supremely pleasant host, what more could you ask for? Thank you so much for helping make my birthday weekend this magical!

HI Kevin, Many thanks for the generous review. I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday evening...you certainly had a good night for it. I'm glad too that you enjoyed the walk through the scale model of the solar system in our house...it does make one appreciate just how big our solar system really is...and how small we are! Thanks also for the great photos of the night sky you took while here...they really show the Milky Way arching over the sky in great detail.
