About
The Ercolani family will host you by offering you a guided tour along the monumental path of the fifteenth century, in the historic center of Montepulciano, and will reveal its treasure that is not seen, but is there: the Underground City. Under the foundations of the main noble palaces of Montepulciano with its passages, cool passages, wells, hidden crypts, Etruscan areas and the descents in stone stairs. Within the historical route you will also find our aging cellar of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. and Vin santo D.O.C. Riserva that mature in oak barrels of various sizes, shapes and characteristic toasting of the wood. At the end of the tour you will be involved in a spectacular tasting of various wines of own production, including the Nobile di Montepulciano, accompanied by tastings of pecorino di Pienza, cured meats and other local products. The experience described above is totally free, and if you purchase the wines, you can have the FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.

    Great tour and great wine
The cellars are fascinating look into the past and present of the area. Melanie did an excellent job describing the wine making process and the history associated with the tunnels. The tasting was enjoyable and informative providing insights into the wines and cheeses that they produced.

The whole experience was amazing. We had Melanie as our guide and she definitely made it fun and educational. So many fun stories of the town and the entire place. Served us amazing charcuterie with our wine while she explained each one. We would definitely recommend this lace. Bought a case of the amazing wine.

    Anna was excellent!
We truly enjoyed our underground tour and wine tasting with Anna. She was an excellent tour host and made our visit very enjoyable. She explained everything and answered all of our questions, and helped us to order wine to be sent back to the US. We highly recommend going to visit and trying these amazing wines and getting the full tour and history of the underground cellars from Anna!

    Great wine tasting- free!
The Cantina Ercolani in the city of Montipulciano is a fantastic experience! There is a huge underground wine cellar that you can explore before doing some wine tastings with some cheese and salami. Sarah did our wine tasting and explained all the different varieties in great detail! The wines were delicious! We absolutely loved our experience with Sarah and the Cantina Ercolani! Highly recommend if you’re visiting the beautiful city of Montepulciano!

Such a fun first spot to see!
Our wine tasting at Cantina Ercolani with Sarah was so interesting, informative, but most of all fun! Sarah really took the time to explain each wine that we tasted, we didn’t feel rushed or that she was simply trying to sell us wine. Sarah is so professional and kind, we wished we could have brought her along with us to see more of Montepulciano, and it’s enchanting streets! I recommend making Cantina Ercolani your first spot to see!

A delicious learning and buying experience!
Having been greeted by a charming young man at the door, we visited Ercolani winery and cellars in Montepulciano with a view to buying a couple of bottles of wine. We were given an excellent tour of the wine cellars and museum with Sarah. She was exceptionally knowledgeable and imparted her knowledge with great enthusiasm and flair! We were then treated to wine tasting, which also included a tasting board of delicious local delicacies. We tasted five different wines, at no cost and with no pressure to buy. The wines were so good that we bought not only the couple we had gone in for, but an additional 12 bottles to be shipped back home - free! Thank you to Sarah and team for their superb hospitality!

    Tuscany’s Best Wine
Cantina Ercolani - Città Sotterranea & Museo is the showcase of the Ercolani Family Winery and their subterranean aging cellars. Their main production is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino. I visited in March 2024 and while there learned about their wine production methodology and philosophy. I appreciated they do not use distributors and operate by direct sales only. We received an extensive tour of the subterranean aging cellars which were once the hideouts and escape routes of the Medici’s. In the cellars, we received a private tasting of their typical and reserve wines and had a Tuscan delicious lunch. I was so impressed I bought two cases of wine which the staff arranged for free of charge shipping to my residence in the USA! The Ercolani Family won a new customer as I will certainly call upon them again to restock my cellars in the future.

Excellent Free Wine-Tasting + Tour Cantina Ercolani is one of many wineries in th
Cantina Ercolani is one of many wineries in the historic centre of Montepulciano. What sets this one apart is that they offer free wine-tastings and also free tours of their underground cellars. Other wineries also have underground cellars also but Cantina Ercolani is a massive maze of subterranean caves, chambers, tunnels and secret passageways. There is a separate TA listing for the tour under ‘La Citta Sotterranea’ so this review is mainly about the wine-tasting. However I will say that the tour was fabulous. It took us deep underground where the giant barrels with aging vino nobile are kept but we also saw the secret exits that led out of the town walls, a 4th century BC Etruscan tomb and a medieval torture chamber with instruments of torture. It was fascinating. After the tour, you could stay on for the wine-tasting. It was quite crowded at first but thinned out after a while. In any case, it was run very well so that even those standing at the back did not miss out. Wines were paired with a small wooden tasting plate of local cheese and meats and each of the wines was described in detail and the different varieties carefully explained. I think we had 8 or 9 different wines which ranged from cheap and cheerful to the lovely Brunello and Vino Nobile wines. There was no pressure to buy (although of course we did). They also stock a lot of local gourmet foods, including cheeses, truffle pice and pastas. Overall, this was one of the best things we did in Montepulciano.

Really impressed, completely FREE wine caves to explore. Very interesting to see how the wine is made, with some information boards about. We were expecting a tourist trap with this situated on the main street, but that it was not. After the caves, we did some wine tasting, getting to try four different reds, though we probably could have tried more if we wanted. We had only set out to buy one bottle, and we did not feel pressured to purchase huge quantities or anything like that. We loved the bottle we purchased and left very happy!

We were there yesterday afternoon for the underground cellars tour (free). The owner, who welcomed us outside the shop, was very nice but also very detailed in telling us the history of Montepulciano and the noble families who inhabited it in the past, he also gave bottles of wine to those who guessed some quizzes from he places. We then moved on to the tour of the cellars and Romina, our guide, was nothing short of spectacular: accurate descriptions of all the details of the production of the various types of wines produced, historical anecdotes of great interest also for my children, who they listened enraptured, finally enjoying a wonderful tasting of 4 wines of their own production, together with some exquisite appetizers. All accompanied by extremely detailed descriptions of each type of wine offered: it is difficult to find better! I highly recommend a stop here, for the tour and for the purchase of products that are truly worth the price offered, more than honest!

This is an amazing place. We always bring our friends and guets here. We did so yesterday (7th of may 2022) and opted for a free tour and wine testing experience. I have done tour before but i really wanted our guests to enjoy it. Erica was doing a tour and she couldnt have done a better job. She was very interesting , thorough and funny. Her knowledge and understanding was supperb. The wine testing experience was better than some payed ones we have been on. Please don't start changing for this as it setts you up miles over everyone else. I can truly say its been a highlight for our friends . And we definitely will continue bringing every guest/friend here and recommend it to everyone we speak to.

Amongst the many different wine tastings in Montepulciano, it can be a bit overwhelming to pick one. I would say that with Ercolani, we made the right choice.

Having been to many different wine tastings in both the US and Europe, we found Alyssa (our guide) very knowledgeable and able to articulate the subtle differences between the various wines made by the Ercolani Winery.

After the complimentary tour and wine tasting, do not forget to take advantage of their on-site deals if planning to buy in bulk. We will be purchasing regularly from Ercolani.

Anna gave a brief tour of the wine making process and showed us the amazing cellars under the city before describing and pouring eight different wines for us. The pairings with food were generous and highlighted the quality of the wines. I was surprised that I preferred the Super Tuscan to the Montepulciano wine but having the comparisons was very educational. Anna did a great job explaining the differences.

An amazing experience that we would highly recommend. We started with a fascinating underground city tour, followed by a fantastic wine tasting of some of the region’s best wines and a platter with some delicious local produce. Our guide Melanie was phenomenal, from her understanding of the winemaking process to her incredible knowledge of the wines. Honestly an experience not to be missed.

If you visit Montepulciano, you *MUST* visit Ercolani. We took a personalized tour of the Ercolani winery. It was great. The underground cellar that you go through, seeing the history, the artifacts, seeing the wine being made. We loved everything we tasting and was so impressed with the owner we ordered a case to be shipped to NC, USA. We can't wait to go back!!

Very cool place and very delicious wine. They treated us very well and gave us the history of wine and low prices for good quality wines. I highly recommend if you are in Montepulciano, you don't have to be a wine lover to like it a lot.

We spontaneously without Booking Referral on site. Despite great crowds, Sarah took a lot of time for both of us to pour us a wide selection of wines on offer and explain the peculiarities of grape, ageing and taste. Also all other products could be tasted and the shopping was made very easy. Even with transport to the car we were helped (shipping is also possible).

Visited with friends who live locally make this place a regular stop on their tour of the region when sharing the love of the area.
To say that they were thrilled by this particular visit would be an understatement. Erica was a joy; friendly, knowledgeable and generous. No pressure sales resulting in an initial small purchase and follow up larger order, wish other businesses would follow her lead.
Felt very warm and familial, will definitely return and wholeheartedly recommend.
