Even if you only have a few hours here, the piazza is on the must-see list.
However don’t expect a large or grand space. It is only a small square but it’s surrounded on all sides by historic palazzos and is dominated by the large and austere 16th century Duomo. A particularly charming feature is the small but ancient well, decorated with carved griffins and lions.
Currently the Duomo is closed for restoration work so you cannot go inside. Whilst there is a metal barrier fence around the front of the cathedral, it’s relatively small compared to the size of the building so you can still clearly see the facade. The fence is barely noticeable in some photos.
Standing in the middle of the piazza, if you start with the Duomo and turn slowly clockwise, you will see the Palazzo Communale, the Palazzo Capitani del Popolo, the charming Medici well, the Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi, and the Palazzo Contucci.
The piazza is pretty much in the centre of the small town so almost everything is within easy walking distance. The best way to see most of the main sights is to walk along the corso which runs off the piazza. Starting at the piazza, you’ll be able to walk through the historic centre, ending up at the Porta al Prato city gates.

This piazza is the center of activities in Montelpulciano. On the heights of the city, it is a location for fairs and city celebrations. Just off the piazza are vistas of Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana. There are shops affiliated with wineries, restaurants and accommodations within a few steps.

Piazza Grande is located at the highest point of Montepulciano. As it often happens, it acquired its importance as a market square, gradually overgrown with significant buildings - the cathedral, Palazzo Comunale, Parazzo Capitano. Then the market moved down to the narrow Piazza delle Erbe, leaving the Piazza Grande with only representative functions.

I’ve seen it written in guides that if you only have time to visit one place in the area then it must be Montepulciano.

I don’t agree.

Don’t get me wrong, Montepulciano is beautiful and definitely worth a visit but it would not be my number 1 for various reasons.

- I found it expensive with respect to quality v price for both accommodation and restaurants. I won’t name where I ate and slept as it wouldn’t be fair. Both were fine, nice even but for what I paid I would expect more.

- It has amazing views in two directions and far reaching views of Lake Trasimeno. The views are truly beautiful BUT my number 1 choice has views that are breathtaking, with colours I don’t think I’ve ever quite seen before.

So if you only have time for one place head to PIenza, which is only a few kilometres away. Breathtaking views of Val d’Orcia and one of the finest renaissance palaces I have ever seen, and more exceptional because it still looks like the home that was left to the nation in the 1960’s when the last owner died with no heirs.

Close your eyes and picture a Tuscan piazza so perfect that if you saw it in a movie, you might think it is fake. Open your eyes and smell the espresso. Or better yet, grab a beer or bottle of wine from the nearby cafe and let time wash by.

Wonderful city with medieval monuments, with extremely preserved structures, full of culture and beautiful views on all sides!

We visited Siena, Montepulciano and Pienza. I liked Montepulciano the least. It’s a charming village up some very steep streets but I found it way too touristy for me.

The Piazza and town were full of restaurants and souvenir shops. If it were not for the tourists, the town probably would not survive.

Tip: don’t buy the wine here in town as it’s overpriced. Go to the local supermarket and buy it at less half the price.

Tips: be prepared for lots of walking up some narrow streets. Parking in the town is reserved for residents only so be sure not to drive inside the walls or be prepared for huge fines. Park at the bottom of the hill. Park at the first empty spot you come too as there is a shortage of parking. We were fortunate to get a free parking spot.

Piazza Grande is the main square in Montepulciano. It is all the way at the top of the town. Many of the attractions are located there.

Montepulciano is my favorite Tuscan town, this was my third visit here. We decided to spend New Year's Eve here after spending Christmas in Rome. Piazza Grande on NYE was amazing! They constructed a huge bonfire in the middle of the piazza, it had to be 30 foot tall, there was a live band and fireworks! everyone was popping champagne, drinking and dancing. This is a wonderful city anytime but on NYE it was a once Ina lifetime experience.

btw the next evening, the fire was still burning, and some very smart young Italians were grilling meat and enjoying dinner in the square! I only wish I had thought of that!
