Poor Service and Worse Attitude
Oct 2021
My wife and I went for lunch and sat on the outside terrace. To get there, the restaurant makes you walk in a zig zag through their store to entice you to buy wine and cheese. Fairly annoying. We sat outside on the small terrace which has a terrific view of Montepulciano. Most of the tables are inside, apx. 6-8 small tables are outside. This place caters to groups coming in on buses. The service showed.
Each time, we had to call for attention. They never came on their own initiative to ask if we needed anything. We ordered 2 ribolitta soups and bruschetta. The soups were very good, but the bruschetta never came, The waitress took an order from a nearby table and left them without looking our way we called her over to say the bruschetta was missing. We got a look of disbelief but no sign of concern. It still didn't come. We finished and went in to pay and the cashier who was a manager or owner wanted to charge for the bruschetta. At first she didn't believe us and had to ask the waitress if it was true. Then she said to us, in a tone as if we were at fault, that we should have said something. That exchange was telling of the arrogance and contempt they have for tourists. She reluctantly took it off the bill and didn't apologize or discount the bill for the poor service. This place is a meat market for tourist buses. Don't bother.

Not overly impressed
Aug 2019 • Friends
We visited this restaurant for dinner as it was within walking distance from our accommodation. We walked through a labyrinth of huge rooms to where meals were being served on the terrace. It was very busy as we arrived and we stood waiting, not sure of what to do, for quite some time; some sort of acknowledgement would have been appreciated. We were eventually seated but weren’t given menus; we helped ourselves to those. Our order was taken and the drinks were delivered promptly. One meal of the four that we ordered came quite quickly, so much so that that had been finished before our other three had even arrived. The pasta dishes were filling but I wasn’t overly impressed with the flavour to be honest. The bill was reasonable but for the poor service, I would find it difficult to recommend this establishment. I agree with another previous review that there are so many amazing places to dine in and around Montepulciano that I wouldn’t really bother with this one.

Group dinner and wine tasting
Jun 2019
My friends and I traveled to Tuscany for a private wedding at a villa. We happened upon Fattoria Pulcino, and decided to come back the next day for wine tasting and dinner. We arrived early (before 6pm) to take advantage of the tasting prior to dinner. We didn't have a reservation, and had 10 people. They were extremely accommodating, arranging both the tasting and setting a table for us. The tasting area is cosy, but comfortable to hear and be served easily. They not only served great wines, but bruschetta and cheeses. Once finished, we went out to the terrace, with a beautiful view of the countryside. When we moved to look out at the view, they asked if we would prefer to sit closer to the view, and promptly reset the whole table for 10, The dinner was not rushed, service wonderful, and food scrumptious. After dinner, we were treated to a tour of the wine cellar, along with homemade gelato and limoncello. A marvelous evening was had by all. Of course everyone took home some of their wines, jams, and liquors. Would definitely recommend it and go again if ever back in the area!

Not a favorite

The restaurant is huge, more like a wedding venue. Family owned. No one was in the restaurant upon entering... we should have known then. The staff was pushy and the food mediocre. I don’t like giving less than average ratings, but this bordered on fair. Too many great restaurants in the area to go there. Actually we were warned by the owner of the home we rented but it was close to us and we didn’t want to go back into town that evening. A mistake.

Family style restaurant
May 2019
Had the pici with Tuscano ragu, great pasta and ragu. Very friendly service, also had a marketplace to purchase wines, olive oils, snacks. Some menu items were not available, probably would be better to have a chalk board with the daily menu rather than a written menu. But what they did have was very good.

Super barbequed meats
Apr 2019 • Couples
A very large and popular restaurant ,you can see the open barbeque and meat available .
Excellent antipasti meats so tender, and barbequed chicken and steak. Large choice of wines, selected local wines more economic than those they offer as a free tasting on arrival.Large shop for wine cheeses and preserves

A taste of Tuscany
Apr 2019 • Couples
Just outside of Montepulciano, this family owned and run restaurant provided a fabulous taste of Tuscany on a rainy April afternoon. The family farm provides many of the delicious ingredients including the local wine. The family- sisters and assorted family members- work together to continue the tradition started by their parents and grandparents. Part store, part cantina, part restaurant, this place is huge with free, ample parking outside. Yes, buses arrive too, but it never felt touristy. And all the guests arriving on the buses the day we were there were Italians looking for a good meal.

We enjoyed prosciutto, polenta with ragù, ribollita, artichoke hearts preserved in olive oil and wonderful grilled steaks with a bottle of their wine. Like eating Sunday dinner with someone’s talented nonna in the kitchen.

Horrible dissapointment
Mar 2019 • Family
Our guest advised us to go to this restaurant. It was overpriced, cold, hostile place. We were waiting for pasta for about 1 hour and we got a bit of spagheti with tomato which was not very good. As an apetizer was 5 pieces of bread that was almost horrible. We also ordered beans expecting some special Tuscany flavour and we got plain boiled beans as if i made them from a can. Dont recommend this. Whole place seems like a weird fraud. Far from family place

They actually have a few rooms across from the city center restaurant.
Sep 2018 • Couples
The restaurant Fattoria Pulcino actually has a few rooms across from the city center restaurant, just inside the lower city wall gate. The room itself was bit funky, but the location was exceptional, and the price was right! We found and reserved it on one of the popular hotel sites. There is no one actually there, but you just wander across the street to the restaurant, and they give you a key and accept your documents. Breakfast is actually at another nice family owned store and restaurant around the corner. It worked out very well for us.

Warning to Canadians from Ontario
Oct 2018 • Couples
My husband and I were in Montepulciano a couple of weeks ago and came upon this winery. They had an underground wine cellar that we visited and were invited to taste some wines afterwards. The staff were friendly and engaging and told us they shipped cases all over the world. I guess it was a week moment for us in this beautiful town and we decided to have a case shipped to Oakville, Ontario. We spent 390 euros on the wine and they charged us $50 for shipping to Canada. We figured we would have to pay HST on the cost of the wine once it arrived in Canada.

When we arrived home we were instructed to call customs to have our wine released. To our shock, we were told there was 102% levy on the wine as well as HST, duty, taxes and OGD filing fees so the total was going to be approximately $1000 CA to release the wine on top of the $671 CA so approximately $1600 CA for 12 bottles of wine. We have called the winery twice and emailed them twice to no avail explaining our situation and asking whether they would consider allowing us to return the wine and we will pay the shipping cost back of course. We were given 3 choices from customs; pay the custom fees, see if the winery would allow us to return to wine or forfeit the wine. We are leaning towards forfeiting the wine but we were hoping the winery may consider some kind of refund if we sent it back but no one has reached out to us.

The winery gave us a number to call which I have. First time I spoke to someone that didn’t speak English and she told me to email the winery which I did. After no response I tried calling again and spoke to another woman who didn’t speak English so I asked her if anyone there could translate. I spoke to a nice gentleman who translated our dilemma to the lady and she said she would check her email and let the owner know. After another day and a half of no response I emailed again, still no response.

Truthfully, at this point I want other Ontarian’s to know that buying cases of wine in Italy is an expensive proposition. Although I realize we should have investigated the cost ourselves I believe the winery should be telling people that they need to check the cost of shipping wine before they take there money.

We had an absolutely wonderful vacation in Italy and this has definitely put a bad taste in our mouth.

I guess it’s a lesson in buyer beware! I tried to find anyone who had experienced a similar situation but have had no luck.
