Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On tripadvisor there are 2 topics reffering to the same attraction: Bastioni Medicei and Forte Falcone ! I have just visited the site and on the Italian entrance ticket there is another name: Fortezze Medicee, so beware! The building is impressive by its size, position and especially by the view you get on the higher levels. There is no explanation, audioguide or written to what are you seing at each level. Important warning: the visit implies a lot of steep climbing, especially if you start the visit at the first gate as you come from the port. In the heat of a summer day, take enough water and a hat! Unfortunately, the restauration made to the top of the building is a disaster, as it is in such a great contrast to the rest of the construction! At the end of the visit, you will treasure the photos you have taken to the sights OUTSIDE the building. As historical information, nothing much beyond you already knew: good Cosimo built the big fort to scare the bad Turks away. Too bad for a construction of such importance to be appreciated as a good panorama site!

The strongest motivation for going up to this imposing fortress is the beautiful scenery of the blue waters around the island of Elba, seen from its towers and walls. Otherwise it is a desolate place screaming of continuous neglect. We have looked for anything that will show some kind of care , but even the signs for going down were placed in some poor places, causing the descend to the town below to feel like going down a strange and intricate maze. The walk path down comprises of stairs, cobble stones stretches, tunnels and concrete passes, and patches of plain dirt. It is a pity that those responsible for this historic site, that could be a major attraction to the town, left it to its present state of decay.

Worth the trek ... Flip-flops not advised as footing is not always steady.

Totally worth the time and effort.

We walked all the way up to this fort only to discover it does not open until 11:00 a.m. We did other sightseeing and returned later so happy we did. Entrance is €5.00 and a map is provided. It is well maintained and was not at all busy when we were there. We did have trouble finding the entrance though. As for specific directions from your hotel. Not handicapped accessible. Wear comfy shoes.

The view from Forte Falcone over the bay is just spectacular.
Though, we were not impressed by the way the Fort is kept.

To understand the history of Elba, a visit to the Fortress is a must. Start with the museum and work your way down plattform for plattform to best enjoy the view to the harbour.

The Forte Falcone fortress looks more attractive from far than actually on site. There's a small museum (of Bonaparte?) inside, but I was not impressed much by poor exhibition and excessive text in the descriptions. The route inside the booklet implied a lot of key points, but they are mostly just empty spaces. I am not sure it is a consequence of the pandemic or else.
On the other hand, the 360-degree view on Portoferraio, the sea and the Elba island is glorious. Great place to make photos or birdwatching. And that overall gave mostly positive impression to me.

To date, a desolate building, dirty and in ruins; a heritage to be valued. The ancient historic buildings in Portoferraio are abandoned to negligence.

A large fortress with great views over the city and port area. Interesting small museum on Bonaparte, 2nd world war, and the castle/port. Also has a nice bar/cafe at the start of the walk down with good views.

Irregular cobble stones and countless steps will only inspire you more to hike through this amazing fortress complex. Incredible views of the city. Highly recommend.
