Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The grotto is home to an underwater nativity scene, made of ceramics by an artisan from nearby Vietri in 1956. Since that time, divers from all over Italy come to pay a visit to the Holy Family at Christmas. The Emerald Grotto can only be visited on a boat. You will be taken in a rowboat that hosts about 10 passengers and given a tour with a guide. You can reach the grotto either by sea in a ferry, by renting a boat at any of the ports along the coast, or by car/bus. You stop at the facilities on the main coastal road and reach the departure point by way of an elevator or along a panoramic stairway. It is recommended being visited in the early afternoon, between noon and 3 o'clock, to enjoy the best possible light. The facilities are open daily from 9.30 am to 4 pm, the entrance ticket to the grotto is 6 euro (times and price can change without notice). We enjoyed it a lot.

We got lucky with parking and were the first ones of a small group to buy tickets for seemingly the last “showing” of the day. I had zero expectations and was really amazed by this grotto! What a wonder to see the emerald-colored water in the corner of this otherwise dark cave. Of course, the gentleman also gave us a tour of the various stalagmites and their interpreted shapes (a crocodile, a pipe organ, a cathedral, etc) and, this being Italy, there was a nativity scene under the water. I appreciated that he spoke some parts in English to explain things. It was a really cool experience!

Loved this! Not sure how or why there are negative reviews. We booked a 2:40 pm tour on site at the pier in Amalfi. There we boarded a boat to be taken to the Emerald Grotto and at the grotto everyone got off and boarded smaller boats inside. It was breathtaking, the color is gorgeous! The entire thing took about an hour and a half. We made it back in time to catch a 4:25 ferry to Positano. The pier in Amalfi was somewhat chaotic, but it was fine.

Full of tourists; you can't take 3 steps in a row that you have to stop or avoid people. There are no local people around except the poor employees of the typical shops who almost made me feel sorry for the so much work that had to be done. The restaurants (and I would also add the bars) have disproportionate prices for nothing exceptional to eat. Overcrowded beach and non-restricted access. I literally ran away after half a day here and I must add, thank goodness! Because even staying just a few hours the parking lot I chose practically robbed me. Choose other destinations if you don't want to stress like me.

Roberto was an incredible guide! We stopped here on a tour & had the option to do it for 10€ per person. It was incredible & so worth it!We waited about 5 minutes & were ready to go! Roberto truly made the experience because he knew so much about the cave & was so passionate about it. So many fun facts & seeing things in the rocks was amazing too. Beautiful experience, i’m so happy we were able to do it!

The cave is a bit small and indeed you see everything when you enter, but it is really cool. The blue colour is very interesting and the stalagmites and stalactites are impressive. The guide was nice and gave some good information. This is a nice stop for half an hour when in the Amalfi coast.

Well worth a visit! A short little tour around a cave, beautiful blue/green water… the tour guides do a great job…. It’s simple and small. Whole thing takes half an hour ish. It’s only 10 euros for an adult and 6 for a child under 12, it’s worth it if you drive to it (free parking) or are on a boat tour already. I wouldn’t pay more than 10 euros to see it. But it’s beautiful and a nice little way to break up the day. There’s also a nice shop at the top, with a bar and toilets. You have to get a lift down from the road.

Our private driver - guide on our Amalfi coast tour stopped at this (tourist trap). It wasn’t the 10 euro per person that was the problem but the rowboat ride in a 20 square meter circle pointing out shapes. After turning in a circle for 15 minutes you wait to take an elevator (that takes 7 people at a time) back up to your car next to the pottery factory tourist stop :(

We were on a boat tour from Positano to Amalfi and back. We had an option to stop at the Emerald Grotto on the way. It sounded interesting so we decided to stop. What a waste of money (10 euros each). The cave is tiny. The "tour" involves you and about 19 other people getting into a small boat with a guide who rows around the cave to point out the few stalagmites and stalactites. There is light that comes in from a tunnel that makes a small portion of the cave look emerald. This only happens if there is direct sunlight. Not worth it so don't waste your time or money.

This was a last minute addition as we drove by, our tour guide Roberto Allesandro just pulled over and said this is something you should do. Short walk down some stairs, €18 for a family of four then a long elevator ride. We were there at 0900ish and were the only ones there. The water was choppy and no sun, but still got some great pictures of the water and the underwater nativity. By 1000 the place was packed even in November.

We absolutely want to be able to swim during our boating day to a grotto. Does this tour let us swim for a bit (not just jump in for five minutes)? Thank you!
Written 18 January 2020
No. Sorry. It does allow you to swim but not for very long. Only a few minutes because there are others waiting in boats behind you to go in. The absolute most time you’d be able to swim is the time it takes for the boat to enter the grotto, make a few rounds in there and exit. You’d be able to swim along side the canoe, if he allows it.
I think if you tipped VERY VERY well, he’d be more inclined to let you swim.
But that’s only my opinion.
Hope this helps.

Run daily and on the hour I believe. Best times between 9am and 1pm was our hotels recommendation.

Is there anywhere to leave luggage (2 small wheely cases) if you are arriving at the grotto by SITA bus?
Written 4 June 2017
I don't believe there is a storage for luggage at the Emerald Grotto. It is very small and we left our luggage on the bus.

When visiting the grotta della smeraldo, do you have to take the boat? Are you able to walk inside and view it by foot? We have a child with us so would prefer to avoid the boat if possible... Also, is there parking nearby?
Written 9 May 2017
not possible by walk, but the trip on the boat is short and very very simple. no problem with Child. in june we have parking in front of the grotta..
best hours are 2 and 3 Pm

Waar kan je opstappen in Conca dei Marini? Hoeveel kost het en hoe lang duurt de tocht?
Written 11 July 2016
buenas tardes es facil de dejar el coche en el parking para bajar a ver la gruta
Written 18 May 2016
The cost to get in is 5 euro, we were on an all day boat tour to Amalfi and Positano and the boat stopped off for free, otherwise you need to go on a separate tour and most likely pay.
