In Ragusa Ibla next to the 'Villa' (as the Sicilians call their public gardens) you'll find the remains of the ancient church of San Giorgio to not confuse with the Duomo in the main piazza in Ibla. It was built around the XII century and...More

Interesting sculpture, much ravaged by time and the weather, to the extent that both St George and the dragon look like skeletons.

This Sicilian-Gothic portal with a relief showing St George Killing the Dragon survived the 1693 earthquake. It is enclosed with a gate of wrought iron. It is especially beautiful under the lights at night.

This gate is well worth seeing, and contributes to the unique feel of Ragusa. It is especially lovely at night, when it is well lighted. The figure of St. George slaying the dragon is very interesting.

Ragusa owes its Baroque splendour to an earthquake which meant a total rebuild. This gateway to the old cathedral is all that remains of the previous building. Thanks for the memory

The only architectural element that survived the earthquake of 1693. It give a good idea of what the medieval town must have been.

The main element of the portal, the relief of St George and the dragon, is in very poor condition. However, the outermost band of the decorative orders above has charming reliefs of dragons and bent figures playing musical instruments Worth seeing for those alone

Passed this way as part of walking tour of Ragusa. Surviving gothic church portal with carving of St George still just visible.

Ragusa was almost completely rebuilt in the late Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake. This lovely portal to the old cathedral was saved. An interesting counterpart to the lovely 1100s architecture of Palermo and Monreale.
