    An Invigorating Escapade
Parked on a narrow street and walked up numerous sets of steps and streets to eventually end up at Piazza Duomo. The labyrinth of old town streets, intricate alleys and curving lanes means you can get lost, but it seems all roads lead to the Piazza Duomo and that fabulous church. Great views. Here I saw 19thC Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti, Teatro Donnafugata and Chiesa di San Giuseppe – all unfortunately closed during siesta time. There are little trattorias, tiny cafes and bars to sit and enjoy the view and refresh yourself with great food and drinks. On the way out to Modica, I came the wrong way up not one, but two dead end streets and had to reverse out, up hills with barely enough room on either side. I could not open my door fully. I blame the GPS

    Excellent getaway spot in Sicily
Beautiful old city with stunning views. We stayed just outside Ibla on the central Ragusa side in an Airbnb on the hillside overlooking Ibla. Can’t beat that location if you have a view of Ibla.. Ibla is a collection of very old building and churches that is not overly commercialized though with sufficient restaurants and cafes. We just spent much of the time walking around the streets and getting in our steps. Two days is about sufficient for a visit as you can walk everything in one day and there are only so many churches one can explore over a weekend. As we were here over Easter weekend we were able to catch one of the Good Friday church processions which were very interesting to watch and walk along with for a bit.

    Lovely Hike
This is more of a hike than a walk from the Old Town of Ragusa. Moderately strenuous, its steps all the way up. I didn’t find the destination to be that interesting. There’s one dead action pedestrian street, and the Cathedral. The best part is the view looking back at lower historical town.

We parked at the bottom of the city as the streets within are not for average drivers like me. And there are quite a few that are for residents only. - with some so narrow there's no room for turning back....! Walking to the top along narrow streets with superb vistas was well worth the hike. Pack plenty of water and be sure to visit one (or a few) of the many quaint restaurants and cafe/bars to re fuel or just sit, chill and let Ibla engulf you. The churches are beautiful both outside and in - but remember to take some clothing to cover shoulders and knees - no shorts or vest tops wearers will gain entry.

Drove to Ragusa from Ortigia, nice drive through the countryside but once in Ragusa it was a let down. Not much to see, shop and restaurant people were not very friendly, which has been unique to the other places visited on Sicily.

We chose this city to visit rather than Modica which was a mistake.

Ragusa is a tale of two cities. The first, Ragusa, Ilba, was the center of an independent county from 1091. The old city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, and it was rebuilt as two cities; Ragusa, and Ragusa Superiore, which were united as one city in 1926.

Get lost in Ragusa Ibla, the lower old town. It is home to many baroque buildings like the Duomo di San Giorgio, a grand church with beautiful paintings and stained-glass windows. There are many other churches, palaces, and fountains to enjoy.

We visited and spent three nights at this quietly beautiful place. It is more a tourist venue with only 2000 residents than a living town but it is very beautiful and well worth a visit.
There are many beautiful buildings and very good places to eat although in November, a lot of them are closed due to lack of footfall
We were ready to leave after the second night!

Sicilian town in Barok style. Nice small streets, great views and many churches. Normally it’s a popular place and must be crowded, but in view of Corona we felt we were the first tourist around again... we felt perfectly safe!

We were staying in Ragusa Superiore, and took at taxi to Ragusa Ibla as it was terrifically hot and humid. It cost 12 euro for the taxi to take us to Piazza Duomo.

The narrow streets and architecture are truly beautiful, and being able to sit for a while in the shade on the piazza and enjoy a granita was just lovely.

Getting back to the hotel wasn’t too hard, but we did have to wait a while for the free bus that leaves from just outside the public garden. The bus (Linda Urbana) dropped us back at the train station, and we were able to walk the 10 minutes or so back to our hotel.

Be warned: FFP2 masks are mandatory on all trains and buses in Italy, until the end of September 2022. No-one is let on without the correct mask.

We loved this place. We stayed up the hill in the new town and every evening we walked down the ancient rat-runs down and up again to ibla. our favourite place in sicily - better than noto , modica, palermo ...... Stay there for four nights and use it asd your base to explore the ancient towns around - but do spend every evening wandering around , eating in ibla , having a nightcap in the bar on the steps....

I have very mixed feelings about Ragusa. Maybe my expectations were high. Maybe we had just been in a much smaller place we had been to before and really like (Piazza-Armerina) Ragusa or rather Ibla is spectacular set on a hill. But it's mostly quite run down and can I say it dirty? Sicily is like that...lots of faded grandeur but not sure...I didn't like it as much as I had expected to. Maybe all the climbing up and down?? Bit too touristy?? Ok what did I like? The view of Ibla from Ragusa is pretty damn good especially on a sunny day. There are beautiful gardens in Ibla. As ever in Sicily people are lovely and friendly. It is trying to be more "green" and I totally applaud that. But could you maybe find a way to get your dog owners to pick up their dog mess???Worst for this have encountered for quite a while. Please. Not sure I will come back. Not saying not worth coming at all but we stayed 4 days which maybe was a couple too much.
