The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

Well worth the hike

Riva de Garda is a wonderful place with breathtaking views and the 20 minute walk up the mountain to the Bastion is well worth it and their prices are very reasonable.

Fantastic views over the town and thankfully a cafe by the Bastion to have a drink. Worth it though it's quite a walk with kids.

Little hard to find how to get up there but well worth the climb. Lovely little cafe with stunning views at the top.

The walk to the Bastione, the views are all worth the visit. The Bastione [pronouned ... Basti oh nay] itself is evocative of a rich history. It's not like one of UK's grand old castle ruins. It's quaint. If you have the extra hour continue the walk back to Riva del Garda via Santa Maria Maddalena [a deconsecrated 1200 A.D... More

Having started on the climb up to the Bastion ( previously viewed from the lake) ,it was a welcoming site as we zig-zagged up the mountain side. A beautiful view of the lake and mountains accompanied a refreshing drink and bruchetta.

If you like a bit of history this is a small bastion. There is a bit of a hike to get to it, all up hill so be prepared. Once there the views of Riva Del Garda are magnificent.

Walked to the Bastion up the steep zigzag path. A few seats on the way up to rest the legs. Absolutely stunning views of Riva from the Bastion and the adjoining cafe. We were glad we didn't do the walk on a Monday when apparently the cafe is closed; didn't see a sign at the bottom warning of this before... More

Worth walking up here for the great views of the lake and the town below. Steady inclination from the start but the paved path is well maintained and a bench in almost every corner. It does take some time and effort but trees arond and along the way that provide the needed shade and comfort. Not much to do in... More

Il Bastione is about a 30-minute walk from Riva, not a difficult climb. We had a cheap yet delicious lunch at the restaurant at the top and drank in the wonderful views of Lake Garda and the surrounding towns. A little piece of paradise.
