The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

A long but beautiful walk up to castle can see why they have grottos going up. When you arrive the view is breath taking well worth the walk.

An easy walk up to the Bastion which has a restaurant when you get there and if you want to walk further you can go for about another hour and a half up to the castle.

We walked up here on a warm afternoon. The walk is not too difficult but probably not for the very unfit. There is a cafe at the bastion and a lovely view point as well as the opportunity to walk further up the mountain.

20 minute walk from the roadway gets the heart pounding but it is so rewarding when you reach the Bastion. The views over the town and Lake Garda are stunning and is a must when visiting Riva.

A good walk up but worth it when you get there. As well as the views there is a lovely restaurant. We had a cold beer and a delicious Pizza. What a lovely way to watch the world go by

This place is very interesting. We chose to go up with el-bikes - lots of fun up the steep, stone-paved road. You can also walk, but it is steep and you would need to change your t-shirt when you reach the top. The restaurant/bar is...More

We enjoyed a steep walk up the good quality path which leads to the Bastion. There are great views over Riva and the lake from the terrace below the Bastion. The iside can also be visited without a charge.

Great views and worth the walk up. Should be advertised more as definitely a must do while in Riva. Cafe was great for a much needed drink on a hot day with shade.

It was paved the whole way up and we weren't sure we would make it as it was fairly steep in places. There were plenty of seats which we did need during the 30 - 35 minute walk up. But all worth it for the...More

Yes but it would not be easy. It is quite a long way and parts of it are steep.

It's a steadily steep climb up, but on a well-surfaced trail.
