One follows via Gargnano (Gardesana Occidentale National Road SS 45bis) from the centre of Riva heading towards Limone. On the right before the tunnel, take the old road which once linked Riva del Garda with the Ledro Valley. From there one can enjoy breathtaking panoramas for once in a lifetime photo opportunities.

A moderate uphill bike or walk to a wonderful cafe with great views- and then a fast and fun ride down! Approx 1 hr up from Riva and 15 minutes down.

Very nice path and great views over the lake, but sooo many bikers it seems like a struggle trying to negatiate what side of the road are you taking and what will the bikers do next. Walkers are easily outnumbered.

Believe all of the reviews about walking this trail. Mountain bikers are like mosquitoes. They are a serious distraction if you are walking as they outnumbered us by about 50:1. But the views are stunning. Too bad that there isn't a divided pedestrian path. Watch...More

Must do! 10kms up to lake, plenty of restaurants to eat then ride back. Beautiful scenery. Steady incline (4-5%) bit rough for street bike, rent a MTB. Can make a loop of it down the other side of the valley. Cafe at Ponale for break...More

This is a lovely walk although you do have to watch out for cyclists who seem to think they have right of way! The views across the lake are stunning.

My two daughters, aged 12 and 14, and I hired bikes from Torbole and cycled to Riva Del Garda and then on this path. This was actually one of our best memories of our 10 day Tuscany tour! There are plenty of steep sections and...More

Great walk, not too difficult with sensible shoes. Scenery fantastic. Not too busy in April, can't speak for the peak times. Sun on it in the morning., but plenty of tunnels to cool off in. Fantastic!

Nice trekking. We have decided to go first 3km from Riva to end of MTB route. I takes less than an hour of easy walk with breaks to take pictures. I have also explored higher parts (to Pregasina) with my roadbike on another day and...More

How long does it take to walk the Old Ponale path (there and back from the centre of Riva)

It depends on how far along the path you go. At some point the bicycles became too much of a distraction and we turned around. We had parked our car near the beginning of the path (there is a convenient lot) so I can't say... More
This ponale path strikes me as a bit too dangerous to ride a bike on with teenagers. Does anyone want to prove me wrong?

We saw all ages riding it, some even younger. As always it's a case of being sensible. Narrow and rocky in places and a steep climb up.
