The façade of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is gabled, with walls made up of stone blocks, very interesting
In the lower part the portico with five round arches interspersed with Corinthian columns.
The upper part of the facade is in Romanesque style, in the lower part there are five rose windows, with the largest in the centre; above there is the mosaic Christ enthroned between the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. With the sunset light the mosaic becomes brighter and even more interesting.
To the left of the facade, the thirteenth-century bell tower rises.
Inside the cathedral is not as attractive as the facade, the cobbled floor with small colored pebbles form a rough mosaic, some frescoes still intact should be seen. I liked the facade more, less the interior, and I was a little disappointed.

After leaving the car in a paid car park in the lower part of the city, I reached it easily thanks to escalators. Arriving from a small street at the back of this religious building, the most important in Spoleto, you arrive in the large square in which it stands and you are amazed by the imposing beauty of the facade. The Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, dates back to the 12th century, but was restored in the 17th century. It is even more wonderful if you admire it from the steps at the end of the square, in front of it.
The gabled façade has five 12th century rose windows in the lower part and three rose windows and a 13th century mosaic in the upper part. The mighty bell tower is majestic, built with materials dating back to the Early Middle Ages. Considering the hot day, I lingered for a long time, sitting on a bench in the Renaissance portico, which is accessed by high arches. You can ask for an audio guide to admire all the works of great artistic value inside. Impossible to describe them all in one review and also boring for the reader. I will limit myself to giving indications on the ones that fascinated me the most. I stopped in particular to observe some frescoes by Pinturicchio and, in the apse, I was enchanted by the true pictorial masterpiece present in the Cathedral: the Stories of the Virgin by Filippo Lippi. The blue color of the background and the wonderful dress of the Madonna make this work one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance. In the right transept there is the artist's funerary monument, commissioned to his son Filippino Lippi by Lorenzo de' Medici. There are many chapels with other valuable works of art; in that of the Relics an autograph letter from Saint Francis is preserved.

Wonderful cathedral both outside (precious facade) and inside with small / large masterpieces all to contemplate and study. I recommend using the appropriate audio guide. I was particularly struck by the Chapel of San Leonardo containing three great works by Pinturicchio. Absolutely not to be missed!

We were based in Spoleto for 10 days in April 2024 while touring the hill towns of Umbria. During a walk around Spoleto we visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta which dates back to the eleventh century and is the Duomo of Spoleto. We reached it via line 2 of the Percorso Meccanizzato on the way up to the Rocca. The Duomo has an impressive white facade and an even more impressive interior with a geometrically patterned floor, lots of natural light and magnificent ceiling frescoes by Fra Filippo Lippi. A side chapel also exhibits a signed letter from St Francis of Assisi to one of his early followers. Sitting quietly in the light-filled nearly empty Duomo, provided us with moments of connection to the millennium that it has witnessed. We also happened to walk through the nearly deserted Piazza del Duomo one evening after dinner and the illuminated Duomo was a silently imposing presence.

This cathedral with a square in front can be reached by going up an elevators set up, not far from a parking lot in Spoleto outskirts. Like many churches across Italy, this is a splendid Romanesque building very much worth a visit not only for prayer and worship. Inside there are magnificent works of art with various paintings, including frescoes by Pinturicchio, mosaics and more.

The cathedral, or rather the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is the most emblematic and well-known building in Spoleto. From the heart of the village you reach the church and the large square in front via a long staircase which makes the scene unique and evocative. The church dates back to the 13th century and has a beautiful and articulated façade made of stone blocks, the result of works carried out on several occasions. The portico is the result of a subsequent intervention at the end of the 1400s. The Baroque-style interior with three naves, at first glance seems bare and of little interest but looking closely first at the frescoes in the apse and then at the many chapels full of works, polychrome marbles, semi-precious stones and stuccos, you change your opinion. Among the most famous we find the chapel of Bishop Eroli which houses a fresco by Pinturicchio, a scene centered on the Madonna and Child in the warm colors of pastel and ocher. Also worth admiring are the frescoes in the apse and, among the chapels, the one of the Relics and that of the Most Holy Icon are absolutely worth seeing.

Spoleto Cathedral is among the most beautiful churches I have visited. The structure is located in the historic city center at the end of a staircase which initially goes downhill and overlooks the square of the same name. Facade with Renaissance portico with marble balustrade. There are several rosettes and niches but above all a beautiful mosaic. Interior in Baroque and Latin cross style with three naves. Worth seeing are the frescoes in the presbytery.

After descending the beautiful staircase, an impressive square appears before you. The three-story facade has five rose windows on the second level, and above them is a gold-colored mosaic of Christ giving a blessing, created by Solesternus. Inside are murals that have peeled off a little. The famous ceiling painting is beautifully preserved and is a stunning sight.

Of great impact when looking at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta from the top of the stairs that descend towards its entrance. The certainly imposing bell tower dominates it. Note the frescoes by Pinturicchio inside. Unfortunately, both during the day and in the evening I found this small corner of Spoleto, known not only for its historical profile but also for its television exploits, almost deserted and in general, even in the city, very few tourists. Incredible.

Stop in look around enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. Plenty of art work to appreciate and take pictures of. The floor is definitely old and worn but the patterns that were created are wonderful
