This is a small town with an ancient history. The town is proud of being the birthplace of Ovid, but there's plenty more to see, including a busy, colourful marketplace opened twice a week (we were lucky to be there on a Wednesday when it was open). You will see plenty of vendors of the famous sugar almond bunches called confetti - well worth photographing; buy them if you have a sweet tooth (I didn't even though I have a very sweet tooth).
We were there on a wet March day and there were quite a few other tourists. It's probably swamped in high season - be aware.
The surrounding countryside is lovely.

It is safe, friendly and welcoming!! Great shops, places to eat. Mercato (or Market day) is on Wednesday and Saturday mornings - must do. If you have limited time go on one of these two mornings.

My mom is from Sulmona and many of my relatives still live there. My favorite regions are Tuscany and Veneto, but Sulmona is a very charming and friendly ancient town. In fact, I recently lead a trip with colleagues to Italy, where I drove them in a mini bus 3,50 KM to my favorite places throughout the country. I ended the 15 day trip in Sulmona and Rome, thinking that some may not bee too interested in Sulmona. I was happily surprised to find that everyone in my group loved Sulmona! Sulmona was the home of the poet Ovidio (Ovid), and is where the famous confection, Confetti, was invented my Mario Pelino. The center of town is beautiful. Ancient Roman Aqueducts run through Piazza Garabaldi. If you have the time, you won't regret spending several days in Sulmona.

Everything you need is right there on Corso Ovidio!
During our 1 week stay there was a night market offering food, shoes, clothing, hardware, kitchenware etc....
We were fortunate our stay coincided with Piano Piano. All the piazzas along Corso Ovidio had either music videos, jazz, classical music, dualing pianos etc....
Passiegiatta is something to embrace and partake in. It is all happening on Corso Ovidio!!!!

We arrived by train and walked 2kms to the apartment. The footpath was non-existent in places and rough in others, (hard on the suitcase wheels). We caught the bus to the station when we left Sulmona, which only took 5 minutes. Walking to and from the station is not recommended, if only to save your suitcase wheels.
The walk from the station into Sulmona was not a good introduction. Things picked up immensely when we approached the strip of garden called Villa Comunale. As we got onto Corso Ovid, we knew for sure, this was going to be a good place to be.
We stayed here for two nights. Our beautiful apartment was inside a 17th century palace, which was located in the heart of the city.
Sulmona is lovely, friendly people, good food, lots to see. Not crowded with tourists, which also means there are none of the trappings to catch the tourist dollar.
These are some of my favourite things about Sulmona.
The daily passeggiata, down Corso Ovidio, the street is positively humming from late afternoon, until late at night and people seem so happy.
Piazza Garibaldi has so many lovely things surrounding it but my favourite is the mediaeval aqueduct, built in 1256. Easy to sit here and watch the world go by, with a gelato of course.

Gelateria la Rotonda, (really good gelato, it is always busy), where people gather on the steps of La Rotonda, an arched portal with a 16th century fresco and eat gelato, this area is very vibrant. The portal is part of the Church of San Francesco della Scarpa.
The beautiful Porta Napoli, built 13th century.
Complesso della Santissima Annunziata, built 14th-18th century, it is a beautiful building with so much detail on the facade. This is also where people gather on the steps in the evening.
I kept seeing confetti shops from a distance and thought they were florist shops. They are amazing to look at and they taste good to..... nothing like flowers.
Then there are the streets, which are wonderful for just wandering around at leisure.

Driving from Rome, we stopped for a break in Sulmona and found a lovely town with cute shops, selling everything from honey products to art work. Town is generally quiet and people are friendly. This is a great spot for a lunch or coffee stop.

Sulmona is the real and authentic Italy that tourists often miss as they race around the hot spot cities and destinations. The main piazza is has a spectacular setting surrounded by mountains and is the equal of any in Italy. The city is full of life and 'happenings' but is still small enough not to be overwhelmed. Wed and Sat markets are the real thing. Ovid and confetti and lots of history define the place. If you are in search of the real Italy, this is it.

A curious mix of buildings with lots of open space, reminiscent of Siena or Bologna. A fun place for a 'passegiata'.
Currently the town has a compulsory mask policy, which is uncomfortable but there you go.

Sulmona's Corso Ovidio is truly amazing. The scenery, the "passeggiata" time, the coffee bars and little food shops, the ancient Annunciata Complex and the Piazza Garibaldi are all part of an incredible tourist experience.

The architecture is beautiful and is is kept very clean. The central square host a market regularly.
