To kill sometime and to fight jet-lag while I arrived to Varese for business mid afternoon, I drove up in the late evening. It was dark being Nov. The place was close and considering the cold night, I was literally the only one around the streets! Still, I enjoyed walking around the medieval streets, its passages and mini piazzas. Stopped... We visited on a stunningly clear November day, when there were few visitors but spectacular views across the Lombardy plain and towards the Alps. A not-too-strenuous climb, with interesting little chapels along the way where you can read about the life-size sculptures of biblical scenes on display. Well worth a visit

Perfect for an outdoor visit at any time of the year. No entrance fee. Easy to get there as you can drive to the top and park there or walk the 2km historic paved walkway up (recommended). There is also a free lift from the parking for those not so fit.

I can highly recommend a visit to the UNESCO world heritage site of the Sanctuary of the Sacro Monte of Varese. We took a walking tour which we were told would include traversing large cobblestone paths up steep gradients, so only the fittest of our group had signed up. We departed the hotel at 5:00pm and returned at 7:30pm. Located... More

We biked up the beautiful forest road to Sacro Monte, which took a good hour. The scenery and views are absolutely splendid. Then we walked our bikes (no riding allowed) down the zigzag path to see the 14 chapels. The path leads back to the road and an easy descent to Varese. Well worth the effort.

Views, history, wonderful restaurants, boutique hotels. Still a cloistered monastery within the city but with year round residents. Ten minutes from Varese but a century removed.

Beautiful village surrounding the church, steps and cobbled stones, houses clinging to the mountain and very peaceful. Well worth a visit, and you should take the walk up to 3 crosses-quite easy to go, and the view make you feel you`re at the top of the world.

Went here as part of a Trafalgar tour group at the end of the day. Good call as the site was virtually empty. The interior of the chapel, which takes a bit of a hike to reach from parking lot, is stunning and sacredly impressive. And the outside vista over the countryside near Varese is of a sweeping grandeur. Glad... More

Sacro Monte Unesco is a beautiful historic place with a great deal of appeal for tourism as well as the spiritual pilgrim. There is good access to the highest vista points making it an idea regional area to view distant mountains and lakes. Highly recommended.

It is a nice calm place with a beautiful view over the lakes. You can follow the chapels path and enjoy the tranquillity outside the city. On the top of the mountain there is a little village where you can visit the beautiful church. The prices in the bars are quite expensive.
