About
The Popes' Palace is the most important monument of the city of Viterbo and it has become a symbol . It was built to mark the transfer of the headquarters of the Papal Curia in 1257 by Pope Alexander IV . Raniero Gatti strongly wanted this building and also built a large audience hall, now known as the "Hall of the Conclave" for the fact of having hosted the first and longest conclave history. Another characteristic part of the Palace of the Popes is the Loggia of the blessings (better known as the Loggia of the Popes) built in 1267: it overlooked the Pope coming from the Hall of the Conclave. Recently it reopened the sumptuous hallGualterio. The Palace is included in the tour circuit of the monumental Polo Colle del Duomo: free of charge with the purchase of the ticket is the audioguide in five languages (Italian, English, French, German and Spanish) that will accompany you in the discovery of all the areas you can visit.

Definitely an impressive palace worth visiting.

The interior is quite bare if it weren't for the futuristic audio-video guide that frames the environments as if we were in the past.

Particular but "challenging", both because of the weight to carry around but above all because you end up looking at the tablet more than the building itself.

The small garden full of aromatic plants is beautiful.

Ticket €11 at the limit but it fits
(€13 with gardens OK - €17 with gardens and bridge NO)

The large room that hosted the conclave does not have much to show, other than the heraldic coats of arms of the participants. The audio guide tells in great detail the life of the many popes who followed one another during the 13th century. More interesting in the next room, the polyptych. In the last room, transformed into an audiovisual room, you can see a short film that tells the story of the longest conclave in history. From the loggia and the windows, you can admire the Faul valley and the Viterbo walls.

Engaging experience for those who love to immerse themselves in a place that has seen so much history. Friendly staff and quite pleasant audio guide. The museum part perhaps resonated with me less than the rest of the tour.

To tour the palace + museum + church with the audio guide that is offered together with the entrance ticket, 1 hour may be enough. In fact there are not many things to see but it is still a very pleasant visit to "immerse yourself" in the papal world with all its evolutions. The view of Viterbo is beautiful and the area is pleasant for walking and/or eating

I wasn't planning on exploring Viterbo but a friend convinced me to make the trip and I'm glad I did. The quiet alleys lead me to the Palazzo dei Papi and it was pretty nice. Arriving early, I pretty much had the place to myself. A lot of history to soak in!

Besides the really wonderful arched outer wall and the magnificent architecture, we were able to visit only a terrace (gorgeous view on the surroundings) with a fountain. Maybe it needs more readings...

I had no idea of the importance that viterbo played in papal history other than the fact that one pope moved there from the Vatican. An imposing cathedral that contains some really interesting artefacts. The walk to the cathedral is down some very higgledy pigeddly winding streets which give off a medieval almost sinister air. Take your time and let your imagination run wild. It felt strange sight- seeing something that plays an active part in people's lives.

Not very necessary to visit the Museum, if you are not very into Pope's history. Probably a nice look outside coul be enough.
And you can simply enjoy the surrounding nice Place and view.

It was interesting to learn that the idea of a conclave was born here. Just lock up the cardinals and wait until they found a solution. Would that work with politicians too ?

The complex consisting of a lovely piazza with a fenestrated loggia looking out over the country side, the palace and the Cathedral are all very interesting and not on the popular tourist map , but together with the whole town (once so important as it was the papal seat) is crying for attention
