Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The cathedral had a gorgeous ceiling although the building itself was surprisingly plain. There were the remains of some wall frescoes by the altar and one of the chapels had the best example of tromp l'oeil we'd ever seen. The bronze plated doors were impressive too. Entrance was included with the Papal Palace ticket next door.

The cathedral is free to enter, and is remarkable for it history, simplicity and the quality of the renovation after receiving a direct hit from a bomb in 1944. The tour (in Italian with an English handout) provides access to two more rooms: the choir and the sacristy, more Baroque in nature. Both are worth seeing, with some wonderful 3D effect painting of pillars and decoration. The overall tour of palace, cathedral and museum takes about 50 minutes (9 euros).

Impressive if - by Italian standards - rather austere cathedral. Very ornate ceiling and the doors are modern, but quite striking. The darker and gloomier (and more prayerful) the better! Worth a visit - and/or prayer - in a lovely historic setting in a largely unspoilt city with great panoramas - the composition of cathedral, piazza and palace next door is quite impressive.

Only one word is needed to describe this area. The church is stunning. The renovations they were doing have paid off. I can't wait to see it again

This complex includes the cathedral, the Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace), a museum and of course the large square they sit on. Pope Alexander IV ordered their construction which was later used for a papal canton, the gathering of the church's cardinal to elect a new pope. The area is now the major tourist and pilgrimage draw in Viterbo. The cathedral isn't one of the more beautiful or famous but does have some key highlights like the painting of the crucifixion supposedly by Michelangelo which is in the attached museum. The adjacent bell tower is interesting as well. One entry ticket gets you into all of these sites.

The Cathedral, which despite its Renaissance facade, still maintains a Romanesque interior and a beautiful bell tower.

Although it is not the most exciting cathedral, there are a few interesting aspects. There is a painting of Jesus blessing Saints by Gerolamo di Cremona from the 15th century and a 12th century Madonna and Child (copy, the original is in the museum next door.) There are some frescoes to be seen by peering into a room behind a grill on the right side of the church as you walk in.

Wandering around Viterbo it would seem all the streets lead to the Cathedral of Viterbo judging by the foot traffic. This Romanesque church overlooks Piazza San Lorenzo as does the Palazzo dei Papi and the museum of the Duomo, major draw cards of Viterbo. Interesting the church was built on the ruins of a pagan temple in the twelfth century but the attractive black and white bell tower to the left was built in 1369. We took the time to inspect the bronze relief doors of the cathedral before entering which is free, but to view a side room in the cathedral was included in our entrance ticket to the Palazzo dei Papi. The cathedral and the Palazzo dei Papi both held a significant role from 1257, for twenty four years, Viterbo was the home of the papal throne.
