Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Pinacoteca e Museo Civico is a museum located in the old town of Volterra, a medieval city in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is a small museum, where you can see some paintings and, at the end of the exposition some amber figures (typical from the region). Nice to visit, if you walk around the old town.

Worth a visit if you have purchased the excellent value Volterra Pass (along with the Alabaster Museum that is in the same building). The religious artwork is well presented and interesting, though it does get a bit overwhelming after a while and it would be nice if they had a bit more information on the town and its history somewhere as part of the exhibits. The hydrogen engine display on the top floor was a very interesting aside though!

The art gallery is not very large and is easy to visit. Some paintings are truly valuable; among all the Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino, freshly restored which brought to light details that were no longer visible and restored colour, and what colour, to the composition. Other paintings of notable importance are by Signorelli, Ghirlandaio, Pomarancio, Donato Mascagni and poor Daniele da Volterra who didn't just paint underwear... a beautiful collection, even if illuminated with lights that make too much of a mirror on the canvases. Those who love painting should not miss this visit. The small sector dedicated to alabaster processing is also interesting.

It is not the primary purpose of a trip to Volterra, but a notable surprise.
The museum is housed in an ancient building in the center and has true masterpieces of art from the late fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century.
The things that struck me most were two paintings by Taddeo di Bartolo, a wonderful altarpiece by Ghirlandaio and the amazing Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino, which I knew because it is at the center of the film La ricotta by Pasolini but I didn't know that it was the same in Volterra.
When I was there, August 2023, it was being restored on an "open construction site" and I was able to follow some phases of the work. Very interesting!
Compliments.

The same building contains the art gallery and the alabaster museum. Relevant works are also exhibited inside the art gallery, but the alabaster museum is no different, with its sections, both historical and contemporary. The building that houses the two museums is also very beautiful to see.
The site is part of the circuit of places that can be visited with the Volterra Card

Housed in a historic building a stone's throw from the central Piazza dei Priori, the art gallery and civic museums represent one of the main museum centers in the town of Volterra. The exhibition includes mostly pictorial works but also sculptures and historical objects, mostly from the medieval era. Although not widely advertised, this art gallery is definitely worth a visit. Entrance included in the Volterra Card, also including the alabaster museum, housed in a wing of the same building.

as the Pinacoteca and Museum is included in the Volterra card, we gave it a visit, but did not spend really much time in here. it was of minor interrest to us.

Great collection of 15th and 16th century paintings. The Deposition by Fiorentino and Signorelli's Madonna and Child with saints are the standouts. Balance of other works and alabaster exhibition is worth avisit

See the Deposition from the Cross by Rosso Fiorentino. It is stunning and represents a transition to the modem style of painting in 16th century

Lots of other local religious art in the gallery.

The alabaster exhibition is quite good too

I spent a day with a friend in Volterra as a tourist. We bought Volterra cards so we could visit all the museums, including this museum. Interesting museum with many historic displays of local interest. Collection was eclectic and the manner was display was odd, but... worth a visit if you are in Volterra.
