There are many elephant sanctuaries - in my view this should rate right at the top. Apple and her team are totally dedicated to the health and well-being of the elephants with a future aim to educate people and improve the life of elephants wherever she can, not only to provide a sanctuary. Anyone thinking of going to a sanctuary I would definitely recommend this one! An unbelievable experience, with a really tasty lunch and snacks provided.

happy elephant home is truly one of the most peaceful & relaxing places I have ever visited. As soon as we arrived, I felt like I was in a little paradise.
our guide was kind and knowledgable and you could feel how much she loves these creatures. from what we could see the elephants here are respected, loved and well cared for.
We tossed up between this sanctuary and ENP, once we arrived however and saw ENP over the river we were glad of our choice. Although ENP has many many elephants, there were also many many people. Our tour had 7 people with 3 elephants - the one on one time with the elephants I wouldn’t change for the world.
The food provided for lunch was delicious and easy to eat - many of us went back for seconds!
if i were back in chiang mai i would return undoubtedly. thank you happy elephant home for making a dream come true. 🐘🐘🐘

This was probably the best day I've ever had while traveling. The staff was so helpful and kind and truly treats the elephants like family. You can tell that they love them. It was an absolutely magical day.

Fun experience with the elephants, was able to get up close with 3 elephants in the sanctuary.
Didn’t notice any malpractice with the elephants or anything unethical.
Did feel however that some other sanctuary’s are adopting a “hands-off” approach as humans feeding/touching/washing the elephants can cause then anxiety.
I enjoyed my time at Happy Elephant Home however this was overshadowed by these thoughts that we may be causing them distress by having tourists touch.
I think it’s a tough one to consider.
There are neighbouring sanctuaries that are adopting hands off approaches and I would encourage that you explore these options first.

First they let us know the story of each of the 3 elephants they had rescued.
Spoiler alert they are sad stories 😔 but with a happy ending nonetheless ☺️.
Elephants although huge is size have not the appropriate backbones tho carry weight on their bags. We feed the elephants bananas, we accompanied them to the river as they bathed and we made and fed one of them some medicine balls. I had never seen elephants up close before and I loved every minute of it. They are such lovely animals and at happy elephants home they love and care for them.

What an excellent experience, really well organised and at the same time, relaxed and down to earth. The whole family came away smiling.
We’d done our homework and wanted to do an ethical trip and came away deeply satisfied. You get to really interact with the elephants (not for anyone who is squeamish about mud) and learn a lot at the same time.
Would definitely recommend.

We did our research and we were really looking for an ethical sanctuary. We were not disappointed.
The elephants were free ranging when we got there and seemed to be in good spirits. We could get up close with them and they were extremely gentle.
At no point did we feel the elephants were coerced into something they didn’t want to do. We stopped when they stopped to investigate something. One decided she had enough of the river and she proceeded back to her home pasture.
Everyone at the sanctuary was very chill and we had a good time and left feeling good that we played a part helping support 3 old, unwanted elephants live the rest of their lives out in peace. It was truly wonderful.

Had the most amazing time at Happy Elephant Home. Our two day one night stay was the highlight of our trip. Apple is an absolute rock star and we had a blast getting to help out and really spend time with the elephants. Definitely recommend going a full day or staying the night if possible.

Very special way of meeting with elephants who have had a previously hard life and have been rescued to this sanctuary. Deep dive into the Thai jungle and culture.

Hello!
We just attended the half day tour at this sanctuary today, I can confirm that little Meena is safe and sound here! She actually has such a strong bond with Omo, our guide. She followed her around everywhere! Meena would hold Omo’s hand, protect her when she sat down, hugged and kissed her with her trunk it was incredibly sweet to see. But yes she is here.

We are visiting Chiang Mai in a week or so and want to visit this sanctuary, would you say a half day is enough and does anyone know what more you get with the full day? Thank you

We went for the full day and I have to say it was a great decision; hence, I believe half a day is too less.
As already mentioned you kinda drive an hour each way and with half a day you hardly spend enough time in the sanctuary and experience how the elephants are living and taken care for.
For the full day, in the morning we got some interesting information about their elephants first, then changed and cut sugar canes which we fed to the elephants and tried covering them in mud for cooling down. After lunch we went for a little hike to the river swimming and came back to Chiang Mai in the evening.
To be honest, if I had missed either the morning or afternoon part it had been super disappointing because each of the activities is kinda special and provides interesting insights in the elephant's daily life.

I have paid for this online via pay pay through the website provided by trip adviser last week, but have received no confirmation. I emailed them but have not gotten a response. Is this typical? should I just expect to be picked up where I had indicated on the day I reserved or should I have gotten a confirmation? What has been others experience with this?

We booked our trip through our hotel - the day beforehand. If you don’t get a response to your email I would suggest asking your hotel to confirm the reservation.

Hi everyone
How far in advance do I need to book a full day here? Do not know exactly when I will be in Chiang Mai but some point between Jan/Feb. Do I need to book days, weeks or months in advance??

We booked the night before and it worked out.
For the morning half day, should we expect to be back in chiang mai around 1:30?

I think around 1:30-2:30. Depends on how many customers on the bus. Because the driver has to drop everyone off their hotel.
