In addition to normal train services through the Ziller Valley to Mayrhofen they do some journeys each day by steam train. Being in a special group we had our own compartment with padded seats however there was even at least one open carriage. It is a very picturesque valley hence the popularity of this tourist rail. Our coach drove empty... More

The Zillertalbahn is a nice way of traveling through the Zillertal. As well the normal trains as the Steam train offer good service and connections. for a good price.

This was a magical ride along a beautiful valley bottom. As it runs parallel to the road everyone toots their horn and waves to the steam train. It's a real community event. At every stop people turned up to look and wave. If you stand in the outdoor carriage you will get sooty but this seemed to add to the... More

If you are visiting Maxyrhofen without a car the only way to leave the valley is via local bus or the Zillertal Railway. Good regular service, provides excellent opportunity to view the Zillertal Valley and local villages/towns. Unfortunately as it calls at all stations along the valley it is not quick - shame they don't also provide a more express... More

I love steam trains and was really looking forward to the much publicised Zillertalbahn steam train. The engine was good but here are the issues. First it's a long train and if you are not in the first one or two coaches, or the open goods wagon, you wouldn't know you were in a steam hauled train. This is because... More

With so many little ski areas in the valley and the ski buses not always being quite as frequent as desired when traveling with young kids, the promise of a train is a great way to eek that extra 10 minutes of patience from them, however be warned Zell am Ziller is a ghost town on a Sunday afternoon with... A great little train which links Jenbach with the Ziller Valley, travelling all the way up from Strass to Mayrhofen. There are now more frequent trains as the line has been doubled up and there are daily Steam train journeys. A great day out which could take you to Aachensee, or just a way to see the lovely villages in... More

The Zillertal railway offers an excellent twice an hour service along the Zillertal Valley. It is clean punctual comfortable and speedy. It is not really possible to make a round trip by steam train in a relaxing manner if you are staying at the Mayrhofen end of the line.

I enjoyed this train to the fullest. It is old but it adds to the charm of the Zillertahl valley. I took it all the way to Mayerhofen and back after staying in Mayerhofen and the ride was much fun on both directions.
