Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The castle is amazing but it is a shame that the visit is only in German because you are left wanting to know more about the castle, the construction, the curiosities.
Of course, they give you a brochure in English so you can learn some of what is said, but it falls short and we end up looking at more data on our mobile.
On the other hand, getting there is easy but by public transport it takes you almost an hour between getting to the station and then walking 2.5km to the castle.
And when you get there you have to wait at exactly the right time for the visit (in our case more than half an hour).
The entrance fee cost us €15/person and it seemed expensive to do it without understanding practically anything the guide said, who could do it at least in English as well as unfold it to give some basic rules about the visit.
However, you are surprised just to walk through it and see how well cared for it is and everything that is inside (they only allow photos outside).

A very original castle, very beautiful on the outside but what we liked most, without a doubt, was the guided tour of its interior. The history of the castle is undoubtedly curious. They have brochures with its history in different languages, which makes it easier to understand.
I also recommend the tavern right opposite where it is nice to have a drink and eat with views of the castle

this place feels like such a fairytale!! we visited here in the morning before we were visiting nearby vienna and am so glad we took the time out to visit. the tour we had was in german, we don't speak german but still had a great time, tour was about exactly 1 hour. i don't think they do tours in english as there was only a few options and english wasn't one of them. it was no problem though, pretty self explanatory what you are looking at. you aren't allowed to take photos once inside but photos of the exterior and courtyard are allowed. there is toilets here and a small cafe place. you can't buy tickets online but if you look up their facebook it will give you the tour times, just queue outside the castle gate along the bridge and they will let you in to buy tickets just before the tour starts :)

I would rate the experience with 0. Castle was closed although working hours on the net says it is open until 4pm. While taking pics outside we were approached by an elderly man who said is the owner of the castle and demanded us to leave because we were blocking the way for people (when noone was around!!). We were amazed about such rudeness.

12-th century Castle looks like it was never touched since that century . I think it's a must visit place if you are around this area and for all castle lovers. Take a look at one of my photos added to this post.

Yes this castle looks very pretty externally but it was hard to get to by public transport and not safe for solo girl traveller. See below for my detailed description and problems with taking public transport there.
How to get to Burg Kreuzenstein by public transport:
Firstly take metro to end of the line Floridsdorf Station. Then change to surburban OBB trains to Leobendorf-Kreuzenstein station. You will have to buy extra ticket for 6.6 euros return trip on top of the usual Vienna travel card as this is outside the zone. The train only runs every 30 minutes to this station. At the station you get off at the station car park and walk into town from there. Around 10 minutes to walk into the area in town where you see sign pointing up the mountain to the castle. From here it is a steep 15 minutes power walk through the woods to the mountain. This is not a safe walk for a single girl there was absolutely no on in the woods when I walked there or back. I could be killed and no one would know. There was a dead rat on the path too. The train arrived at station at 10:35 and I got up to the castle at 11am to see them shut the door. Once they shut the door it remains shut for 1 hour until the next tour and there is absolutely nothing up at the castle except a small drinks kiosk which doesn't even sell souvenirs so there is nothing for you to do for 1 hour if you miss their entry time. As it was my last day in Austria and I had plans to visit Hermesvilla that same day I did not have 1 hour to waste waiting for them to open the door so I left.
The 25 minutes walk from train station to castle is power walking and mostly uphill through the woods. I do not think it is worth the walk to see the castle and all that travel time too. Unless you have car I don't recommend visiting this castle.

Our visit to this castle was a mixed bag of sheer delight and total disappointment.
The castle is located in about 30 min drive from Vienna, on a high hill surrounded by a forest. It looks absolutely stunning from the outside - a genuine medieval castle. When we arrived to the main entrance and bought tickets we learned that admission is allowed with guided tours only. We were asked about our language preference. Despite telling the lady at the ticket office that we prefer English we were put into German speaking tour. I speak German and thought i could translate the tour for my husband so we thought it would be a minor inconvenience. However the guide was speaking some weird Austrian dialect so we basically missed the whole "guided tour" thing just following the rest of the group through the tour.
The castle itself was great. All the premises were kept in perfect condition and it seemed that the inhabitants of the castle just stepped out of the room for a while and will be back at any moment. The real jewel was the armory - with a number of weapons and armor, all in excellent condition.
And here we come again to the terrible organization of the whole experience - the guide seemed to be worried only about finishing the tour as soon as possible. He was speeding everyone and rushing through the rooms so if one was interested in certain part of the castle it was literally not possible to stay in a room even for a little longer. Very disappointing.
Another annoying thing was that no photographs were allowed in the castle. Why? No idea. It's not that the flashlight of the camera can damage the stone walls or anything. But every time someone raised the camera or his/her phone to make a picture either the guide or one of the local staff which was always wandering around would shout and try to stop taking photos in quite a rude manner. When my husband raised his camera to take just one picture of the inner yard an angry old lady nearly jumped on him trying to cover the camera with her hands.
The whole tour was shy of one hour long which is definitely not enough to see and enjoy everything this castle has to offer.
Overall if you're a fan of medieval times this castle is a must-visit place. Just be prepared to be confronted with rudeness of the staff and stupid pointless restrictions.

We took the train from Vienna to the closest station to the castle (Leobendorf-Burg - around €10 from Wien Hauptbahnhof) and walked up to the castle. The walk is easy but is uphill and quite steep in parts if you are unfit like me. We also had the unfortunate weather against us and the path was quite muddy and slippery, so if it’s raining or been raining make sure you wear good solid shoes. The walk would definitely be better in summer when it is not raining! The walk is worth it for the castle, it is stunning nestled in the Austrian woodland and makes for a great photo opportunity. We did the tour which is €10 and had a sheet of an English description although could have been slightly more detailed is enough if you know some about the time and history and are happy to just experience the incredible insides of the castle. The tour is on the hour from 11-3 in the summer. Google is your friend if you need it! If you’re looking for an easy unique half day trip from Vienna this is top of the list.

The tour was completely in local language and no option of english. We were not allowed to explain to kids what we were seeing. Even in a hunting room full of animals kids were shushed.... It was boring since we didn't understand and were not allowed to leave the room... It wanted it to be over within first 10 minutes

Kreuzenstein castle is stunning! Worth the entry fee with great tour guides and lots of interesting stuff ! We will definitley revisit the castle! I'd recommend eating in the village rather than eating at the tavern which does not belong to the castle. Up on the mountain you do also have a great view!

Hola! Alguien sabe si hay alguna excursión saliendo desde Vienna?
Written 23 September 2019
Hello, Did you purchase your admittance at the Castle?, & since we will be dropped off by car, will we be able to be dropped off at the top to avoid the long walk uphill?
Thank you, we hope to visit in October
Written 24 August 2019
Yes you can buy your ticket at the castle but it only opens the doors closer to each tour time. There is a small car park and a place to be dropped off at the top of the hill to avoid a walk.

Do they still do the birds of prey show? If so, is it extra? How often do they have it? Thanks

is there a tour in English? how much is the admin fee?
Written 27 May 2019
Unfortunately no. Only in German. You get a translated page in English. The price is reasonable, around 10 euros i think
Written 5 July 2019
Tour unfortunately only in German but you get a page of explanations in English. Pity they only seem to take the local tourism into consideration...
