Summer in NZ are Dec to Feb. Winter is from June to Aug. It depends on where in NZ you are for the best diving. If you are in North Island then areas north of Auckland would be the best such as Poor Knights Islands or Goat Island or Bay of Islands. I said the best because it has the warmest water but of course other people might have different opinion... typically I wear thick wetsuit in summer or autumn. Winter and spring are for drysuit diving. NZ diving is reasonably good but it is not a tropical place..
If you go to South Island the best bet will be Milford Sound. Amazing diving but extremely cold water. I would wear drysuit all year round here, even in summer!!
Goat Island Dive, Dive Tutukaka, Paihia Dive, or Descend Dive are all professionals, they will take care of you for your diving needs, they even find buddy for you if you turn up diving alone. They will go to sites according to your level and everything can be rented with a cost of course. However, most places only offer bc jacket for rent, not wings. Its not just in NZ but it is a common practice around the world. If you rent a bc, that would usually be jacket, not wings. The cost of rental equipment is varied of course, contact them directly.
Ok, happy n safe diving!
