We took the high speed rail from Bordeaux France to Hendaye France on our way to San Sebastian Spain. The high speed rail does not go all the way to San Sebastian. We got off in Hendaye, walked out the doors and turned left to get to the Euskotren station. Just a few yards away from high speed station. Train leaves ever 15 to 20 minutes or so. You can buy your ticket from the machine or a staffed ticket booth.

They said us that this train is always on time…except yesterday. We drove with the train until a railway station in Spain. There 2 men with yellow jackets ordered us to go outside of the train because there was a problem. No one spoke French or English just Spanish…we took a bus to go to another railway station and then a new train back to France. When we arrived the woman didn’t speak French or English too but she explained us that we could come back next day and our tickets would be available to go to San Sebastián. This morning we were at the railway station at 9 a-m and everything was ok. We drove to San Sebastián with the same tickets we spent a nice day and we came back to France with the train on time. Everything was ok. Finally

We were staying in Guethary, France and wanted to do a day trip to San Sebastian, Spain. We took the SNCF train to Hendaye which took about 25+ minutes. When we arrived at Hendaye we walked out of the terminal and turned right, walked about 100 ft. to the Euskotren terminal. You walk through the door and you can buy tickets at the machine or the clerks window. The trains were very nice, clean and efficient. It was about 12 stops to San Sebastian but a very pleasant ride. Masks were required.

I take this train whenever I visit. It is an excellent service, always on time and clean. It can get crowded at busy times but is convenient and cheap.

We initially booked a bus to travel from Bilbao to Donostia (San Sebastian), mainly because the Basque run Euskotren was touted as taking an incredible amount of time (sources cited four hours).
From the train station in Casco Viejo it actually takes about two hours and forty-five minutes with many stops . Why choose this mode of transportation? Well you have to like the idea of slow travel and be a bit of a romantic as you watch the country go by. The train departs hourly from 05:58 to 19:58 from the train station. If you are not in a hurry this is a pleasant and an inexpensive way to arrive in Donostia.

My family and I took this train from the French-Spanish border at Hendaye. After getting off the TGV at the Hendaye station one simply has to stepped out and of the station go to this smallish looking building and buy the ticket. You may hesitate going there as it looks like a kiosk for a bus, but indeed it is the train to Bilbao. It was cheap and fairly easy to buy. I tried making advance bookings but could not find an App or website to do it with. But no advance booking is necessary. The tickets are easy to buy, the train was not crowded at all and in any case, there are no reserved seats. The train was slow, and it took more than 4 hours to get to Bilbao and it was really just a very long Metro/subway train with plastic seats and no luggage racks, you have to bring your large luggage with you, take more space where people should be sitting, and prevent it from rolling around the train. There were also countless stops. It was not the best of comfort but yes it was quite clean. To take this train to San Sebastian should not be an issue. But to go Bilbao from the French-Spanish border, well as trains go, it is, for now, the only option. (I have heard of plans to build a network of high speed trains for País Vasco.) If you are a large number of people and the price is not a big issue, a minivan for 5 to 8 with luggage will set you back by a say 180 euros. It may be worth the comfort. But mind you, the train tickets for 5 was something like 40 euros, total.

Heading to San Sebastian in Spain from Toulouse in France necessitates a short commuter train ride on the Euskotren frm Hendaye to Amara-Donista. The commuter train runs twice and hour and is a short walk, well signed, from Hendaye station. Tickets either from ticket machines located in Hendaye Station or at he start of the Euskotren line along with a ticket window where French, Spanish and English spoken. The train is comfortable, travels through numerous tunnels so views of San Sebastian are limited. TV style monitors announce next station whilst details of all Euskotren lines clearly displayed in all carriages.
Almara-Donista is a terminus where the train stops for several minutes before heading onward to complete the journey. There is no taxi rank at Almara-Donista station, cabs need to be pre-ordered as they cannot be hailed off the street in San Sebastian. Our hotel was 30 minutes by foot from the station, a conveniently located information office provided all necessary route details. Needless to say it was along walk with a wheeled suitcase.
The Renfe (Spanish national railway) station in San Sebastian does have a taxi rank and the city is a wonderful place to visit!

We took the train from Hendaye to San Sebastián, Spain and all went well. Ticket costs 2.55 Eur per person. Our train is very clean, comfortable, departed and arrived timely. Even though it is a bit slower than bus, but is much more reliable than bus, so we took another day trip by Euskotren train again a few days later.

I'm not a huge fan of contemporary art but this is a must visit if you are in the vicinity of Bilbao , an amazing building in its own right , it's worth a visit just for the architecture . Loved the modern Chinese exhibits with some very interesting takes on modern history , and the Portuguese installation artist works were breathtaking .

Hello I need advice on whether we can travel from Hendaye to Bilbao in Euskotren train? How long it takes and do we buy tickets at station? How frequent does trains depart. We will arrive Hendaye 1233pm on 5 September. I have tried booking on Euskotren but failed! Keep getting error message. All help is appreciated? What is name of station to get off in Bilbao?
Regards Jenny

Yes, but you have to transfer in Donostia (San Sebastian).
See time Schedule at the Euskotren website (euskotren.eus) under timetable.
The E2 from Hendaye (Hendaia) goes every 30 minutes and takes 40 minutes to Amara Donostia in San Sebastian.
From here the E1 goes every hour from Amara Donostia in San Sebastian to Bilbao and takes 2,5 hours.
Tickets can be easily purchased on a machine at the station. No need to prebook and there is no seat reservation or limit on number of tickets sold per Train.
The recommended station to get off is Bilbao Matiko which is in old town of Bilbao.

How long would it take to transit from Euskotren platform to SNCF train? Google map says it's a 2 min walk, and I only have 7 minutes in between my arrival and departure. Is this too risky and better to take the euskotren 30 min before?
