Mont-Louis The Military : Located in the eastern Pyrenees at 1600 m , the fortification of Mont-Louis was built from scratch by Vauban and is perfectly adapted to the geography of the site. Work started in 1679 and was completed in two years. The place has been preserved intact since the 17th century and is still used for military purposes today. World Heritage of UNESCO

Luckily we needed to stop and eat on our way back to Puigcerda from Parc Animalier in Les Angles. Mont-Louis was on the way and since it kept showing up on my searches of activities in La Cerdanya we drove there to eat. The walls...More

It's a great pity that you didn't have time to make the tour of the fortress of the 17th century, built by Vauban for the King Louis XIV or to discover his baroque church and his citadel still occupied by the army! Mont-Louis, in frontier...More

This village has a very impressive set of fortifications, bastions, turrets, high walls etc, all of which have been beautifully preserved. Sadly, we were very short of time so didn't have the opportunity to go inside the Fort, but just from the exterior, it is...More

So its the highest fortified town in France, the huge bastions built to appease the townsfolk living below the fortress. In the UK or Germany or pretty much anywhere else it would be a busy, well cared for place but despite its Unesco WHS status...More

Visited this as part of the three countries in one day tour. The fortifications date back to the late seventeenth century and are in surprisingly good shape for their age. The fortifications include a citadel at the top of a low hill with the town...More

Nice place to go with your family or a romantic date. The village is very beautiful. Although you can go inside the walls, it is not allowed to go inside the fortress.

Went because of an interest in Vauban and was not disappointed. Citadel seemed off limits though as still occupied by the army. Fortifications fascinating but very neglected for the most part although some piecemeal restoration going on. Really deserves much more resources and concerted effort...More

I would recommend you to not come here. Empty houses, 2 shops, just 3 restaurants and that's it. The half of the fortress is occupied by soldiers and the rest is just not interesting.More

There is no doubt that this fortification is worth visiting. The walls are in fantastic condition and very impressive, and it seems really apt that the French commandos still use the fort as a training base. Inside the walls is a village which, to be...More
