- Paul PBury St. Edmunds, United Kingdom484 contributionsThe best cathedral I've been to, and I've seen a few!Without doubt the best cathedral I've been to! Free entry, the largest (and best condition) cathedral in France. Go to the tourist office next door for audio guides and go online to book a tower trip (you go at your own pace and have as long as you want up top) . It really is spectacular.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- liverpool1023London, United Kingdom1,250 contributionsChroma highlightA very impressive cathedral with a very richly adorned interior and some well preserved stained glass. During December at 7 pm the front of the Cathedral is illuminated by a sound and light show. Designed by the Société Spectre Lab, with a soundtrack by the Start-Rec Agency. The swirling colours recreate the polychrome effects that one were present on the statues and porticoes. It makes for a very arresting pre-dinner piece of entertainment and very worthwhile catching.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 December 2023

Beautiful and HUGE cathedral.
If you wish to enjoy the most of it I would suggest three things there, knowing these are managed by different organizations.
1-Tower tour
It is a very basic guided "tour" in the sense there is nothing to visit inside. You just climb 150 steps starting by the north tower to reach the West rose window. A little stop there to have a close look at the window and the main place below. Then you move to the south tower and climb another 150 steps to reach the roof. From there, you have a nice view of the cathedral exterior (flying buttresses,...) and Amiens city and surroundings it.
Tickets are sold to the shop located close to the south tower. Tours are on a regular basis (check at the shop) but do not run on rainy days.
2-Cathedral floor.
Not too sure if they are any guides for the floor tour. What they do have are recording devices with plenty of explanations. You rent these devices from the Visitor Center located close to the cathedral (on the left when looking the West side). Normally you have to put the device close to your ear and hold it there for the duration of the recording. If you do have a wired headphone (3.5mm jack) you can rest the device on your chest.
3-The choir
Open only weekdays at 3pm and managed by volunteers. Free of charge but donations are welcome.
The most interesting attraction of the choir is made by the misericords on the stalls. Each of them have a wooden sculpture describing parts of the Ancient Testament. You start at the Creation and purse with most of the scenes from Genesis, Exodus,.... Truly fantastic. A 3D comic book before modern times.
The volunteer will guide you through all the story. Reading the AT before visiting is advised.
And finally, for UK and ANZAC people, behing the choir lay a statue of a crying/angry child. This was made famous during WWI

One of the largest religious edifices ever built in France, the famous Gothic cathedral of Amiens is certainly worth a visit. I journeyed there as a day trip and it is an easy walk from the train station. There is a charming small park along one side, and the elaborate sculptural decoration of the three portals of the main entrance is alone worth the trip to this small city. Though this historic edifice has sadly lost the majority of its original stained glass, there remains much to be explored and admired in the lofty interior. And a walk around the entire cathedral perimeter enables an ever-changing view of the exterior, including soaring towers and smaller decorative elements, such as the ever-fascinating gargoyles.

We saw the light show in august. Even masked up, sheltering under umbrellas in the rain, it was phenomenal. Just beautiful.
Visited the cathedral proper next day. we hadn't seen it in over 40 years. It had been so beautifully restored, especially the internal sculptures.
A marvel of High Gothic.

Amiens Cathedral is surely one of the greatest buildings in Europe. The soaring gothic vaults and richness of sculpture make it an outstanding sight. As well as the sheer scale it has a unique set of carvings about the lives of St Firmin and St John the Baptist around the back of the stalls. The organ is currently being restored. It is very accessible for British visitors, only 2 hours drive from Calais on an excellent road. The Old Town near the river is an added attraction with bustling restaurants and a friendly vibe.

We were only in Amiens a short time and found the cathedral's opening hours difficult
Advertised as opening at 8-30a.m. and closing at 5-15p.m. we found this unusually restrictive for a church
The outside is stunning and the inside amazing, so ensure you go inside whatever.

Amiens is relatively unknown although it is much easier to reach by plane (flying over Beauvais) than other cities in the French province. It is now a former regional capital (since Picardy was administratively suppressed as a "useless region" in 2016) but retains its very pleasant identity, rich in greenery and beautiful architecture and which could be worth a visit even without the extraordinary Gothic cathedral; however, this is undoubtedly its most important landmark and one of the greatest achievements of the world Gothic, in which stylistic unity is accompanied by above-average dimensions (as in the cathedral of the corregional Beauvais).
It is really difficult to describe the cathedral, which has a wealth and complexity of motifs that can be compared to a large museum and can take several hours, or even distinct visits at different times. The exterior is of the greatest interest both for the majesty and compactness of the structure and for the wealth of statues in the portals, including some particularly loved by popular religiosity (the "Beau Dieu d'Amiens" in the central portal of the facade, the "Vierge Dorée" in the side portal).
Inside, the feeling of monumentality is heightened by the brightness diffused by the beautiful windows, which manage to channel the light from outside into a city that is not distinguished by sunshine (the spicy climate is similar to that of the not far North Sea). Also inside the rest of the house there are countless points of interest, from the tomb of Bishop Evrard de Fouilloy, a masterpiece of medieval French sculpture, to the curious maze drawn on the floor. Many remodelings of subsequent centuries have introduced elements extraneous to Gothic (stucco, gilding, wrought iron gates), but the whole remains extraordinarily harmonious. The visitor can be advised above all not to rush, because it is really one of those monuments from which, once inside, you would never leave.
It should be noted that, as in general in the great French churches, admission is free and free, an aspect for which France can be an example to Spain and Portugal - where you pay an entrance fee to almost all churches of artistic interest - and also to certain Italian realities.

A truly stunning cathedral that is one of the best in the world. The size and scale are hard to express in writing. The architectural design is breathtaking both inside and outside. A tour is not needed as you can enter for free and take as many photos as you wish. The stations of the cross and shrines provide historical information to read in French. There is information on the Christian group in multiple languages for you to read. The pictures give you a glimpse of its marvel, but you really need to go to experience it. It is less than 2 hours from Paris and worth the travel. There are also many good cafes and restaurants nearby to rest.

This is the most amazing cathedral. Apparently you can get two of the Paris Notre Dames inside it but it's not only big, it is beautiful, and very well explained by the many notices on the walls so that you actually know what you are looking at. While we were there there was also a trio of Cathedral people who sang and prayed to the visiting crowds. Not sure what their status was but the singing was lovely.

Spectacular cathedral. Enormous! Take time to look at the decorations, windows and sculptures. Architecture is very impressive. Check out the phitos at the train station first to appreciate the efforts locals went to to protect this building in wartime.

Is the commentary only in the French language? Iwent there abot 15 years ago, and frustratingly it was in French only and beyond my limited ability

Thank you, but my question is specifically about the sound commentary to the light show, not a general tour

We are a Roman Catholic family visiting Amiens Saturday August 25, 2018 and Sunday August 25, 2018. Do you have mass times for the cathedral for Saturday night and Sunday morning?
Written 15 August 2018
Hi - on which days (nights) do they have the light show? And at what time? I didn't see anything about it on the cathedral's website. Thank you!
Written 5 August 2018
The show is only available during the summer and the Christmas holidays. The time moves based on when the sun is setting. When we went it was 11pm. I beleive it starts a little earlier now. The tourist office located right next to the Cathedral will have the time.
Please note, even the tourist office acknowledges that the show starts late most evenings. Definitely worth waiting for.
The cool thing is at the end of the light show, they leave the cathedral lit up like it was painted hundreds of years ago. (yes, all the great cathedrals were once painted!!!)

Can any one tell me what the admission fee to enter please

Hi. I cannot locate days open, and times. Can someone please advise if the cathedral would be open on Tuesday 30th May and closing time? Thanks.

8.30 till 18.30 (summer hours) all the days - the info from official site (unfortunately only in French)

Is it possible to climb to the top of the cathedral? If so, is there a cost?
Written 6 March 2017
There is a tour that takes you up there and you need to check with the ticket office and shop to the immediate left of the Cathedral. Google Amiens cathedral Tours for more. Don't miss it.
