Lovely Roman bridge still in service after 2000 years and countless floods

If you're in the area to see the ruins in Vaison la Romaine, it's worth driving over to see this bridge. Apparently the river has flooded many times, taking out many bridges in the area, but this one still stands and is used for auto traffic today. Amazing engineering by the Romans back two millennia. Very picturesque and worth the... More

Links the old town to the new. Good parking just 100 yards up river on the new town site. Visit the medieval town on the hill - some stiff uphill walking - but magnificent views. Then visit the roman remains in the new town ( 2 sites) very reasonable entry fee.

This first century bridge links the newer modern town to the old town and Fort above. There is limited parking up in the old town, so you can park below the bridge in town and walk across easily.

The Roman Bridge was not very large but it is amazing. Look for a metal plaque on the wall that is black in color and has the year 1992 on it. That is significant in that that was the level of the river on that day of that year and the bridge withstood it the more modern bridge down stream... More

While in town, spend a couple of minutes to see the bridge. It has a nice history, and it was neat seeing the flood level markings beside it, but there are a lot of other bridges in France, and this is not special.

Central to the town river crossing its position is the essence of simple Roman planning and construction. Worth a walk thru the town to admire if only for its age

Spectacular views up and down the river and across to the medieval village, amazing to think how Romans used this narrow bridge and lived in Vaison where so many ruins are still visible. Parking is available in several places right nearby or you can cross the bridge on the tourist train (starts at the Tourist Office -we didn't think it... More

Beautiful old Roman bridge that has withstood many floods over many centuries when more modern bridges failed
