This place was awful. Total tourist trap. We visited this location with a tour group and it was on the itinerary. We were given 30 minutes to explore this place but we only needed less than 5 minutes. The water wasn't even clean. There was garbage floating in it. Tradition says that Jesus was baptized here but no one knows for sure. I wouldn't want to be baptized in this water in its current condition. They charge to use the restroom. I would NOT recommend this place.

The last time I was at Yardenit was around 25 years ago , and it was interesting to see if anything had changed in the meantime .
Gone are the photographers that had accompanied the groups from all over the world to this amazing place , replaced by worshippers brandishing smart-phones on selfie sticks , but the "vibe" was still there !! .
Highly recommended , but choose the day of your visit carefully , some days the place is packed , other days , mainly empty .
The gift shop sells souveniers at " tourist prices" , but if this is going to be a once in a lifetime experience , then "splashing out" might be your only option .
I have included pictures from my last visit , way back in 1998 for comparison
BTW , There was a wheelchair lift to allow access to the Jordan river ( not sure if it was working though )

We were told this is where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist : the facilities here are well set up for the tourists and those who want to submerge themselves in the filthy water. You can buy white printed gowns rent towels shower and change. Tourists are delivered by the bus load to this site but honestly there is no way I would trust that water quality as being safe enough. Scripture also supports another site in Judea as the actual spot- just saying.

We visited this site on our trip to Israel and 3 of our 6 family members were baptized. Many others in the group we were with were also baptized. It was a joyful experience! Everything was well organized. Price was $15 per person and included the required gown, a towel and shower. Make sure you have a bathing suit for under the gown, they are see through when wet! They have liquid soap dispensers in the shower area, which are private stalls. They also have one hair dryer, and I was able to use it without waiting in line! There is 2 gift shops for those who waited for us to change after the baptism. I would recommend this experience.

We visited here and were rebaptized in the Jordan River. The water was green and questionable, so we made it a quick baptism. The water was amazingly cold. You pay for the baptismal gown and a certificate to show your baptism. The changing quarters was yucky and no doors for privacy. Glad we did this, and it is the baptism symbolism that is the attracting, definitely not the gift shop.

I was on a Holy Land tour, so you do not get much time at this spot. We were here to look around and for some gather Jordon River water for baptism later or to bring back home for future baptisms. This place is at the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee not the baptism site where John the Baptist was. Until recently, that area that John the Baptist used was not open to pilgrims. (We did get to see that later). This place was quiet, green and beautiful, with several flowers in bloom. We did see a group participating in a baptism. One of my favorites was seeing on the Wall the Lord's Prayer printed in different languages.

I thought it was more commercial than religious. That being said, it has importance for those believers, so who am I to critique. Nice place to pick up souvenirs, have bite to eat, and watch folks get dunked in the River Jordan. Honestly, it had minimal interest for me, other places had more appeal.

We went to Israel to get baptised and went to the Yardenit site. The water was dark emerald green and looked like it was radioactive! We were told the town of Tiberias sends sewage into the Jordan river just above here. We were determined to get baptised so we went just north of the site and got baptised in the Sea of Galilee (we were allowed to use the beach at a restaurant on the north side). The Jordan River flows out of the Sea of Galilee so the waters the same spiritually to us. The Sea of Galilee is very clean. We finally did our baptism at 6PM at dusk. What was interesting is our photos of the baptism had unusual tiny white images all around us and when we blew the images up some looked like angels. Professional photographers looked at our photos and they did not know what made these white images, but they said they were not bugs as bugs absorb light and not reflect light, (we did not notice any bugs around when we were there). We had our camera's checked and they had no scratches, the white things were on all three camera's photos of the baptism only the baptism photos!

Beautiful place, such a shame that a bunch of crooks, taking advantage of the great spiritual experience that the river offers in order to sell souvenirs made in China and overpriced, dear brothers and sisters ,Do not believe the guides and drivers, as their goal is to get a commission on your shopping (even for rental roves), then If you have already decided to go to yardenit the fake baptisimal site insted Qasr el Yahud that is the real baptisimal place of Jesus, So at least be careful and do not fall into the trap, souvenir shop prices are marked in US dollars and are 4 times more expensive ,from other places, and most of merchandise is fake but sold as original, by the way, I had a great guide thanks to his advice
I bought my robe in a small souvenir shop near the Church of the first miracle in Qana and I paid only 25 israeli shekels...soon i will post pictures of fake and overpriced pruducts

Dear Holyland L,
I am truly sorry you were given this information that prevented you from enjoying the beauty of our place on the Jordan River.
Based on your review; I read that you bought a baptismal robe in Qana, however you forgot to mention your review about the main purpose of what our guest do here and that is to get baptized in the River Jordan.
Sincerely,
Shahar Alon

If you feel the need to be baptized in the Jordan River, then you can experience that here. I've always had mixed feelings about walking through a holy place and then coming across the gift shop tucked away near the exit. But this place has the aura of a commercialized institution dedicated to making your baptismal experience memorable as long as you are willing to pay for it. Everything seems to have a price. Hop into a group line and get a freebie while dressed in your civilian clothes. God will still be happy.

Simple question, what do people wear under the white robes? I'll be immersed in February.
Written 15 December 2022
I'll be getting baptized there in November. How cold is the water? Should I have a wet suit on underneath my robe?

hi did you need to book with the site before going there so they could provide a priest to baptise you Many thanks
Written 24 January 2020
We were with an organised group. A couple approached our group asking if they too could be baptised, so it appears that you don’t need to pre-book a visit. A problem may arise when you approach someone and ask them if they will baptize you
Written 25 January 2020
Hello, may I ask was there someone there to baptise you or do you have to book in advance?also what extra cost do you have to consider?
Many thanks
Written 23 May 2019
There is no resident clergy on site but if you go on to the Yardenit website and contact them they will put you in touch with a pastor/priest of your denomination.
So you will have to arrange it in advance and I presume the cost will be between you and whoever you choose to baptise you.

Hello, can somebody help me, I want to be baptise in Jordan river but I don't know how? I contacted the yardenit twice to provide me a pastor but they did not reply. Do we have to just turn up in baptismal site and join the group? please reply and thanks

Klara1969, I believe that there is someone there who is employed by Yardinit to baptize you. However, if they don't, you can just ask one of the other groups if their pastor will baptize you. It is one of the highlights of a pastor's life to be able to baptize and welcome one of God's children into the family as a public declaration of their faith in Jesus. When our group was visiting, a father with his two sons from Germany asked our pastor to baptize them. Our whole group prayed for them and welcomed them. It was such a privilege and a highlight to connect with other believers around the world. We later ran into them in Jerusalem. With God, there are always "divine appointments." You will have no problem being baptized there. You will be surrounded by believers who would love to do it!! God bless you on your pilgrimage!
